>From an Iowa newspaper dated June 14, 1930: "ALBERT MYERS' DEATH TRAGIC "AUTOMOBILE WAS STRUCK BY A FAST UNION PACIFIC TRAIN. "When news was received here last week of the death of Albert Myers (or 'Ab' as friends knew him), the telegram did not reveal the nature of the accident. The tragic death of Mr Myers occurred at a railway crossing through the streets of Sutherland, Neb., where he lived. His car was struck by a fast U P train with such force that Mr Myers was killed instantly. Many friends here at the old home regret to learn of his untimely death. "The body was brought here for burial, the funeral having been held last Thursday afternoon at the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren conducted by Eld. J B Spurgeon, assisted by O E Messamer. Many old friends and neighbors were present at the funeral, the church being almost filled. "The following obituary was read at the funeral: "Albert Myers, son of Isaac and Sarah Myers, was born in Davis County, Illinois, June 21st, 1857, and departed this life at Sutherland, Neb., April 15, 1930, aged 7_ years, 9 months and 24 days. "When 19 years of age, he came with his parents to Dallas county, Iowa. He, on Jan. 1st, 1880, Albert was married to Elizabeth Badger. For more than 35 years they lied in the Panther community. To them were born six children, one daughter dying in infancy. Mrs. Myers was called to her eternal home July 12th, 1915. "On November 11th, 1919, Mr Myers was married to Mrs. Sadie Kirkendal. Since 1925 they made their home at Sutherland, Neb., where the accident that took his life occurred April 15th. While driving his car he was struck and instantly killed by a fast, through train. "He is survived by his wife, three sons, Robert I, John A, and Orva S of Adel; two daughters: Mary (Mrs. A B Schaeffer) of Adel, and Clara (Mrs Norris) of Stromberg, Neb. Also by sixteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Nathan and Henry E of Adel; three sisters, Mrs Hattie Long of Panora, Mrs F C Wicks and Mrs G C Royer of Adel, besides many other relatives and friends. "As a young man he became a member of the Church of the Brethren and lived faithful, always concerned for work and principles of the Christian religion and his church. His interest in humanity and in business made for him a wide circle of friends and acquaintances to whom the news of his sudden death came as a severe shock. "One by one our loved ones leave us, As the hour of life grows late; One by one their partings grieve us; They are passing through the gate. "One by one they are invited To our Monarch's broad estate; Not a loyal soul is slighted, They are passing through the gate. "One by one we all are going Down the pathway steep and straight; Ah, the joy there is in knowing We shall meet beyond the gate." **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Since Sarah was a sister of my great-great-grandfather, David Kimmel, I took a look in my computer and learned I had more questions than answers. I don't have a marriage date for Daniel & Sarah. First of all, the six children I have for Daniel & Sarah Flory are these: (1) John Flory, born about 1858 Montgomery Co. OH, married Susannah Ulrich Beeghley; had daughter, Mary Elizabeth. (My information concerning this marriage came from Gale Honeyman. I don't have DOB DOD DOM, and I don't know whether there are more children.) In the 1880 census, at Auburn, Sangamon County, IL, John is 22 and living with his parents & siblings. The census taker noted he was "at home" which seems unusual for a male his age. Normally he'd be "farmer" or "at school," wouldn't he? (2) Sallie Ann Flory born 20 April 1859, Montgomery Co. OH. I don't know where this information came from. I haven't found her yet in either of the two censuses I've found Daniel & Sarah's family in. I don't have a DOD but apparently she died at Auburn, Sangamon County. The notation I have on her card in my computer is "Row 5 Dunkard Cem. records." Probably at the time I typed that in it meant something to me. (3) Elihu Flory, born about 1862 Montgomery Co. OH. In the 1880 census at Auburn, Sangamon County, he is 18. I have no information about any marriage for Elihu. (4) David Flory is 12 in the 1880 census, Auburn, Sangamon Co., which would have him born about 1868. However, that raises still more questions, because the family information I had entered for him said he was born August 7, 1880 and died August 13, 1889 at age 9 y 6d. So the nine-year-old David must be some other David Flory, because he can't be this one. (5) Sarah Flory born December 2, 1867, in Illinois, married Solomon Scheller Stamy (b 13 January 1866), according to Cathryn Driver. Their children Nellie Roxie and Daniel. I don't have DOD or DOM. In our family records we had the name spelled "Stamey," but Cathryn said "Stamy." (6) Elizabeth Flory. I have no information on her, just the name. She could fit into the list of children anywhere. (7) A surprise. in the 1900 census at Chatham, Sangamon County, IL, there are no children living with Daniel and Sarah. He is 73, she is 68, and they've been married 48 years. And for children borne, it says 7 children, 4 living. I'll be interested in the answers Gale turns up. Happy hunting. Jan T **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? I have included this will summary as a posting because this may have been a Brethren family in Germantown. Alexander Mack was a witness to the will, which helps support that idea, but it may be that he was just a neighbor or friend of this family. The following Christian Schneider may be the Christian Schneider who was on the Allen (1729) but most likely is not. Pat Armstrong, a Schneider researcher, sent me the following data about Christian. "This Christian Schneÿder died in Old Philadelphia in 1784 at the age of 88, making his birth year ca. 1696. He was buried from First Reformed Church of Philadelphia on Apr. 4 1784. Christian lived on Sassafras [Race] St. for quite a few years before he died. He may also have had a tavern on Second St. in the 1750s." His wife's name is listed as Anna but this could be a second (or third, etc.) wife. Pat also said that this Christian owned land in Bedford Co., PA, an interesting fact. However, there was a lot of military service among his descendants, which isn't too consistent with him being Brethren. >From what Pat wrote to me, the Frederick Schneider listed below most likely is the Frederick who was a son of the Christina Schneider who died in 1784. I believe that this man is the Jacob Schneider who was a brother of Anna Margaret (Schneider) Mack. There is a Jacob Schneider in Germantown from 1760 through 1794, and there appears to be only one of them in each record, implying that there was only one living there throughout this period. Jacob isn't listed in the 1734 land records and there are two explanations for this. One, he didn't own any land at that time, which is consistent with him being listed as a laborer in 1794. However, if he didn't have any property, what did he need a will for? Two, he may have moved to Germantown sometime before 1760 after living elsewhere for the previous twenty to thirty years. This is consistent with a historical account in Biographical Annals of Lancaster County [PA]. I wasn't able to find a cemetery record for Jacob so that may be an indication that he didn't have a headstone originally or that the one he did have weathered away to illegibility. I did find a cemetery record for his daughter, Margaret, who was buried at the Market Square Presbyterian Church. She was born about 1735-1736, which is consistent with Jacob being born in the early 1700's. Margaret Snyder was a benefactor of this church so I hope that there may be more information about her in the church records than what is on the headstone. I have ordered a film of the church records so I'll soon see. The following will summaries may or not apply to this family. The first two are for Jacob and his daughter, Margaret. The third may be for Jacob's son, Peter, but I doubt it since his occupation doesn't seem real consistent with Jacob's. The last will has Jacob as a witness. This Henry Schneider may well be the one that Brumbaugh mentions as one of the Brethren who joined in Europe. I wasn't able to find him in any of the Germantown cemetery records but there is a Henry Schneider listed in 1760 as a subscriber to repair work done on the Upper Germantown Burying Ground so he may be buried there. His son, Adam Snyder, Sr., is buried there, as is Henry's grandson, Adam Schneider, Jr. The following will summaries are for this family. There is a will summary for Henry Schneider, his wife, Elizabeth, and for the mother-in-law of their son, Adam, Sr. David Myers ==================== Wills: Abstracts, Philadelphia Co, PA. Hi Mary Jo, Thanks for the info on Catherine Bennett Overholser. I didn't have an exact birth or death date for her and not a cemetery location either. I know that her mother was Elizabeth Trisler and have proof of that. I appreciate your sending this to me. Thanks!
