    2. winter dellenbach
    3. Could someone remind me who Jacob Holler was. The Jacob Holler that I think I remember was associated with Lower Miami COB in the 1800's. An elder I think. Not Frederick or George Holler, though they are related and were elders there. thanks - winter

    1. [BRE] Henry Wolf?
    2. In the 1850 census for Perry County, PA, Carroll twp, I happily have found the household of "A.S" Abraham Bowman, farmer, age 25; his wife Barbara (Hoerner) 26; Mary Ann, age 2 (grew up to marry Logan Hickerson); Elizabeth, age 9/12 (didn't make it past age 1, alas); farm laborer James O McClintick, 27; Magdalena (Leib) Bowman, age 50; and a young man, Henry Wolf, age 16, not identified in any way. Everybody is born in PA in this list. I know who all these people are except for Henry Wolf. He's not labeled as kin nor as farm labor nor as boarder or servant. Does anybody have any idea who he is and why he might be living with my Bowmans? Jan T **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food. 1. [BRE] 1843 migration from Union Co PA to Stephenson Co IL
    2. In "History of Stephenson County," I found listings of several wagon trains that came west by the National Road, in 1837, 1839, to Stephenson County, IL, and then the one I care about: "Sometimes people came to Stephenson County in large groups. In 1843, a party of about sixty started from Union County, Pa. In this party were Samuel Barber's family of five; John Barber's family of ten; James W Barber's family of ten; John Van Dyke and sons family of eleven; Samuel Wright's family of five; Jacob Gables family of six; Robert Badger's family of seven, William and John Wright. They drove through Mercer County, Pa., crossed the Allegheny River at Franklin, through Warren and Cleveland, Ohio, through Adrian and Janesville, Michigan, through South Ben, Indiana, Chicago and Rockford to Freeport, arriving here after an arduous journey of five and a half weeks. The party divided at Rockford, one division coming on to Free- port, July 4, 1843. They stopped at the Main Hotel which then stood on the site of the old Pop Factory..." The book "Waddam's Grove Church of the Brethren" mentions that the Yellow Creek church began in 1843, but doesn't mention these folks. "As far as known no Brethren were here permanently, at least, until about 1843, when Brethren William Miller of Ohio and Joseph Rush of Pennsylvania came and located in the county. Aside from my Robert Badger, are any of the names of the Union County group of 60 known to have Brethren connections? I think this Robert Badger is probably the one we call Robert Jr (1797-1886) and was on the list of folks helping to organize the Presbyterian church in Stephenson County. In the 1850 census, he is living in Lancaster twp, Stephenson County, and is 52, a carpenter born in PA. His wife is Margaret, 50. Children living with them in 1850 are Samuel, 20; Catherine 17; John 15. In the 1860 census, he is living in Erin twp, and is transcribed as "Robert Bodger." The fellow who became Brethren elder Robert Badger (Robert III in our records) is 31,a carpenter still living in Union County, Pa, married to Susannah Shively, 31, and living with children John 6, Samuel 5, Susannah 3, and Catherine 1. This Robert was chosen minister in the Buffalo Valley church in 1856, and was received into the Waddams Grove COB from Buffalo Valley in 1858. The Waddams Grove book says: "In the year 1855 Brother Enoch Eby and fifteen or more members came from the Aughwick Church, Huntingdon County, Pa... Other ministers and deacons moving into the church from time to time were David Barklow (date unknown) and Robert Badger, 1858, ministers.... Do we have anywhere a list of who migrated with Enoch Eby? Jan T **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food. 1. Re: [BRE] MARTZ, Joanna
    2. Donald Gradeless
    3. Daniel Martz married Elizabeth Curfman on September 20, 1818. He was born March 24, 1793, and died January 17, 1865. She was born August 6, 1801 and died January 8, 1880. They are buried in St. John's Cemetery, Woodsboro, Md. They had eight children. .................. Daniel's Will was witnessed by Michael Shank, Isaac Renner, and William T. Barrick. It was filed January 14, 1865 and recorded January 30, 1865. William H. Martz was the Executor. The Upper County Page 64: the Martzes of Maryland by Ralph Fraley Martz, 1973. I visited with Ralph in 1976, (July 15th when he signed my copy of his book) and there are some major errors for anything near Woodsboro and Double Piper Creek that he had included in his works. I am a Mort (Mort / Morts / Mortz) and Ralph had rolled those names into his (Mart / Marts and Martz). They are very distinct families but difficult to tell them apart from how the names were spelled and written. Many times in the same record Mort / Mart / Martz / Mortz were in the same document! Matthias Martz is Mathias Mort and so are many of the descendants which he changed the spelling to Martz which he did recognize was a separate family but after so many years he could not separate them out. He did admitt to changes some of the spellings from Mort to Mart/Martz when he copied documents.. So anything from Northern Frederick has to have the source documents examined to tell if they are Mort or Martz. So one must be careful with anything he has done with families in this area. These appear to be true Martz. I have about 15,000 of the Mort identified but the older records are still very sketchy. None of the family groups that he worked on in this area should be trusted unless you verify the actual documents. Some are clearly Mort and others Martz and Mark.l Ralph does cover the Renner descendents very carefully. His (partial) index only covers MALES and no female names are indexed. I do have the Barrick History as well. I have never sorted all the Mort documents out that he has included as Martz. I had extracted Mort documents in the early 1970's but everything in Frederick County needs to be rechecked for Mort. They have added quite a few indexes to the older reocrds which sometime in the middle 1970's were moved from Frederick to the MSA about the time they build the new court house in Frederick which now hoses the historical society. A major problem as in the old script very difficult to tell the difference between the script "a" and "o" when the names were written. 3. Is anyone researching the MARTZ line in Frederick County, MD? I am interested in learning who the parents were of Joanna Martz - the 1st wife of Francis Calvin Isaac Renner. She died in September of 1867 and had 2 children Ida who married Clayton KOLB and Newton Daniel who married Carrie May Murphy. I am also interested in knowing if she died in childbirth as I have a 3rd child listed as being born on the day of her death - would like to know the sex if possible. Blessings, Janet

    2. Mr. Honeyman, Thank you for your kind words. Working at the Brethren Heritage Center was a real blessing for Jim. He often ran things by me getting my input, most recently on trying to secure a price break from the Longaberger Company for a 300th anniversary special. I don't exactly know all of what Jim has here in his "office" but with Doug Graybill's help I would think that the BRC would become a home to some of his research. We have asked that memorial contributions be sent to Prince of Peace or the BRC. The obit will be in tomorrow's paper however it is already available for viewing at _www.routsong.com_ (http://www.routsong.com) I will continue to monitor his email address, but you are also welcome to save my personal email as well. My mom has never shown any interest in learning about "that damn computer"; the piece of equipment in her house that kept Jim's attention for so much of the time. 3. Jim was a member of our Brethren-list and although in poor health, kept up with his genealogical interest nearly too the end. His last query was submitted just two days before his passing. As a member of the Board of Directors of the Brethren Heritage Center, he used his business experience in advertising to create two brochures promoting the Center. In addition, he created a spreadsheet to keep tract of the 'Friends' of the Center which was constantly being updated and used in sending the Center's quarterly publication, Recorder. His creative mind kept clicking with ideas for the betterment of the Center. And yes, we board members enjoyed his wonderful sense of humor. His keen interest in genealogy allowed him to track his family lineage back ten generations and contributed to his involvement with the creation of the Brethren Heritage Center in Brookville (OH) where he was a member of the board of directors. Jim was a charter member of Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren where his sense of humor was well known. He had been active in youth group leadership, choirs, card clubs and many areas where his creative talents were put to use. 3. Merle: I commented on early Redstone claims before. I doubt any English settlers lived near Redstone in 1750. This was what I previously stated about his The area west of the Allegheny (Blue) Ridge was deemed Indian Territory by the Treaty of Lancaster in 1744 (I have seen a 1748 date on this as well). The Ohio Company that would lay claim to this area was not granted this land by the king until July 1749. The first trading post was built at Cumberland Maryland in 1750, and a second trading post at Redstone was not built until 1752. The few whites in this area were Indian traders. It wasn't long after that when the French kicked out the English from this area, and the French & Indian War began. The source of this information is the diary of George Washington. Discharge to George E Shively, my Gdn. I understand the legal descriptions, including the bits of acres & perches (what, no chains to go with the perches?) and I think that this is perhaps sometimes giving the history of land transfers concerning a particular property. The most confusing thing to me is the deed from Robert Badger and his wife Sarah Ann in 1872 to George H Shively. I have three (direct line) Robert Badgers but none with a wife named Sarah Ann. The only one whose name I don't know (I thought) died too early to be signing deeds in 1872. Now, if his wife were named Susannah, it would fit in nicely, because George Shively was his father-in-law. But the only George H I have is a son of Benjamin Shively and his wife, Barbara Shively Shively. No dates for him, alas. I think I know who George Shively is (my direct line). Born 1788, died Nov 1854. His mother is one of those Schmidt/Smiths. His wife is Rachel Sties (1790-1861). That fits with the 2nd deed. I'm not sure who Christian M Shively is because I've got so many Christian Shivelys, and I'm not too sure about Jacob S Shively. There are a lot of Jacobs too. These Shivelys had big families and kept using the same names over and over. John Wesley Baker (no dates) married Rachel Ann Shively July 11, 1865, at Lewisburg, PA. Rachel Ann was born June 19, 1846, White Spring, Union Co. PA, died March 6 1921, Huefner, PA. She is d/o John Shively (1814-1893) and Sarah Catherman Shively, according to my records. That would make her a granddaughter of my George I think. Apparently she owned an undivided one-third of the real estate (82 acres) and deeded her third to Jacob S Shively. I'm very curious about who Nancy Smith is, since I'm always looking for descendants of the Schmidts who turned into Smiths---three of them married Shively siblings. Could she be one of those? And I've never heard the name Klose before. There were some Royers in Buffalo Valley, including one who married into the Shively family. Anyway, at this moment I'm simply confused. I may write to the county court house to obtain copies of the deeds, particularly those involving the Badger name. What else can I learn from this information I've already got? 3. The Squire Boone family was placed on "reprimand" by their Quaker Church, at Oley (PA) - there were several things that happened that caused this - Daniel's eldest sister, Sarah, married the german, John Wilcockson (Wilcoxin), in 1742. She was "too conversant" before marriage, and was "great with child". Squire was reprimanded by the church, that he was not in control of his family. also - John Wilcockson was not a Quaker. Daniel's next eldest sibling, his brother, Israel, "married out" of the church (1747), and the family was expelled. We are not sure who he married, but in search there is the name Martha. In one case she was named Martha Morgan, in another her father was named John Maugridge. Both Israel and Martha died of "consumption" (TB) in Rowan Co NC in 1755-56, and Daniel took and raised the 5 little children In regard of both of these people, there has been consideration that they were Brethren (uh- really!) Can anyone give any kind of confirmation -yes or no? (I do not know the Oley region that well.) The result was Squire leaving Oley. Austin Cooper identifies a short stop at Boonesboro MD (based on local traditions), then another stop with kin in the Valley, before arriving on the Yadkin River in 1751. Merle C Rummel

    3. I was so busy with the other Kentucky churches, that I missed this one which Rolland Flory told of in his "Lest We Forget" books - It is/was just southwest of Louisville (at or near the little suburban town of Shively) - it is still in existance as the Parkview Methodist Church, but its location has moved north into the city. Its beginning was before 1793 - a date at which it was accepted into the Salem Association. Records indicate that it was a Union Church -with both Baptist and Methodist meeting (certainly the Baptist Brethren, per later information). The Shively families donated land for a building in 1810. Flory lists membership names of Shively, Banta, Martin, Kern, Burkhart, Byers and Calvert. Many or most of these names are buried at the Shively Cemetery. I've just begun to explore these names. The family stories tell that the Shively and Banta families were at Redstone (Brownsville PA) about 1780, where Daniel Boone (?certainly only the stories about him) persuaded them of a future in Kentucky. Some of or all of these young men rowed down the Ohio River to "the Falls", where Daniel Boone (again?) persuaded them to go to Danville (main city of Kentucky then, where the state of Kentucky was organized). Enroute, in what is now Henry Co KY, an Indian attack killed John Shively and Jacob Banta. At Danville these men joined in the formation of the Low Dutch Company, which purchased some 6000 Acres of land from Squire Boone (north of Shelbyville KY - obtaining a total of 9000 Acres). Henry Shively married Mary Banta (daughter of Henry Banta) at Danville. . The Shively brothers (Christian, Jacob, Henry - sons of Michael Shively - brother John is dead) settled west of the "Wilderness Road" (or "Logan's Path") toward the mouth of the Salt River, where the town of Shively is and where this church was organized. Christian Shively (born 1746) married Anna Maria Bashore, and is recorded as returning to Pennsylvania to bring her to Kentucky. Jacob Shively (1751-1819) married Mary Swindler. Henry Shively (1759-1842) married Mary Banta. I have no information on a marriage for John Shively (1749-1781), although he was 32 years old when he was killed. I only have information on the children of Henry Shively. Henry Shively and family moved to Orange County IN (near the Lost River/Liberty Church) about 1837. Flory says that Henry's son, Jacob Banta Shively (1797-1868, wife Anna Shock?) is listed as a Brethren Minister (obituary in the Gospel Visitor - can anyone find it for me?). Most of this family went with the Disciples of Christ church after the division. These Shively families seem to have originally been Brethren and came to Kentucky as Pietistic Brethren. The "Baptist" identification of the church, then, was originally "Baptist Brethren". That as a result of the Annual Meeting actions in the early 1800s, which lost us all the Kentucky churches, this church went with the Methodists, who were also originally Pietistic. This is the Parkview Methodist Church of Louisville KY, today. Hendrick Banta III (1718-c1805) was born in New Jersey and died at the Low Dutch Settlement in Shelby Co KY. Others in that area were the Leathermans and the Stutzmans. The children of Hendrick Banta seem to have mostly come to Kentucky - I have more work to do on this family. If any of you have information about these families -I would be very interested (including Kentucky branches of the families: Martin, Kern, Burkhart, Byers and Calvert - I suspect this is includes the Peter Kern of whom I previously made inquiry) (Betty Darnell has helped me with some of the modern information.)
