    1. [BRE] ARNOLD DRUSHEL/TRUSHEL
    2. I'm hoping that Emmert or another experienced researcher?is willing to?answer a couple questions from someone?starting?research on the Arnold family. 1) I'm a descendant?of?Daniel (son of John George) Arnold's son, George Arnold, who served in the Revolutionary War.??I've read the relevant sections of?"Allegheny Passage" by Emmert Bittinger.? In?"Allegheny Passage"?Emmert sites the wills of John Arnold and Andrew Arnold (brothers of Daniel).? He indicates that their father, John George, died intestate, but he sites John George's wife, Anna Maria Barth's?will.? I couldn't find any?mention iof the wills of Daniel (who married Agnes Stoner) or Samuel (who married Elizabeth Lehn).? Does anyone have first hand knowledge of whether Daniel and Samuel wrote wills, and if so, when and where they were filed?? (Just looking to save some time - since so many others have already researched these lines.)? 2) According to the family history my aunt gave me,?the above George Arnold's first wife was named Catherine Leatherman.??I know that both the Arnold and Leatherman families were Dunker/Brethren, and these families intermarried a lot.? However, I've checked?"Allegheny Passage" and "All the Leatherman Kin", but I've never found any documentation of which Leatherman family George Arnold's wife Catherine came from.? In fact, I've never found any solid?evidence that George Arnold's first wife's?name actually was Catherine Leatherman.? Does anyone know if there is any actual?evidence that?George's wife's?maiden name was Leatherman, and if so, how this particular Catherine Leatherman connects into the Leatherman families? 3) Finally, the above George Arnold's son Jacob married Catherine Drushel, daughter of John Drushel (a.k.a. Johannes Trushel) and Katherine Mowry.??The Drushel/Trushel surname isn't mentioned in Allegheny Passage, or in any of the Brethren references I've come across thus far.? Does anyone know if the Drushel/Trushel family were Brethren? ? A huge thank you in advance to anyone willing to provide their insights!

    1. Re: [BRE] Family of George Conrad Mack, chr. 1674 (preliminary analysis)
    2. David Myers
    3. Dwayne, Your question addresses one of the frustrating aspects of this. It would seem likely that the Christian Schneider who died in eastern Lancaster Co., PA in 1793 would be the husband of the Susanna Macking who was married in Surhuisterveen in 1725. The biography of the Schneider family in Biographical Annals of Lancaster County [PA] has Christian's wife as Susanna Margretha, which is exactly the same name as the daughter of George Conrad Mack. However, there isn't a surname for her in the bio and the descendants of that family think that her name was Susanna Margretha Ranck. I don't know where this came from and I'm afraid that it's going to be difficult to find out. There are birth dates and baptism dates for most of the children in that family but I haven't been able to track down the original source for those. The family supposedly attended Zeltenreich Reformed Church in New Holland but the baptism records for that church didn't start until the mid-1740's. What makes things even more difficult is that there is a large Ranck family in eastern Lancaster Co., PA so it's plausible that Christian's wife might belong to that family. I hope I can get this straightened out because I'm so close to doing that that I can taste it. Even better for our purposes, the bio says that Christian travelled to Weber-Thal to settle there because friends of his, the Webers, already were settled there. The bio says that the Webers were Swiss Mennonites and I believe that other listers have said that there often is a close relationship between the Brethren and the Mennonites in this country, just as there was in Holland in the 1720-1729 period. So I don't know what I'm going to do but I feel that there must be an answer here, if I can just figure out what it is. I am familiar with this Jacob and > Elizabeth from my research, but had not made the connection. Do you have some > proof of his parentage or is this a theory because of the Brethren > connection? I'm not much help - although my wife is a descendant of Michael Danner (dau Anna, married Stephen Petri), and I pastored the Beaver Dam Church, in Frederick Co MD -where Elder Jacob Danner came (well, Israel Creek, but that was really the origin of Beaver Dam - and the Monocacy Road). As such, I have been very interested in the Danner family. I admit, I had not really connected the Donner Party to the Danner family. I do not have proof on what I presented. Like you, I made the connection between George and Samuel in Muhlenberg Co (I didn't know George was in Rowan -was Samuel there also?) Information that I have indicates that Elder Jacob Danner had sons George and Samuel, and neither stayed in Maryland. Beaver Dam was a major center for migration south, to the Carolinas (which became a source for migration to Kentucky) and Virginia. I had closer proof connecting Samuel to Jacob, so I tied the two together there in Muhlenberg Co KY. In searching on them (on the internet, esp), I found several sources who did tie the two together, and gave George as a son of Jacob, so I presented it that way. So, they came to Jessamine Co KY. The Brethren who I found that went there came from the Antietam area of Maryland (other side of the Blue Ridge Mountains). As I understand, it was a direct migration from Maryland. I had not seen Carolina people there, now I'll have to look further in their history. Now - as to the Tanners - The German could be pronounce either Danner - Donner - or Tanner. (Grandpa tried to get me to learn Pennsylvania Dutch, I didn't! - I think he was disappointed.) The preacher, John Tanner, who came to Tate's Creek, near Boones Station and was a preacher there with George Boone - I have not made a direct connection of him with our Danner family. There were a couple Johns - he could possibly be a Danner (did Michael Danner have a brother, John?). I added him, because of the Brethren connection at the Tate's Creek Church. I was hoping someone might help me with him. The stories connected to him, could easily have been one of the frontier Brethren. I don't want to publish a book with incorrect information - that's partially why I made the intro statement - I haven't proved these families. Merle C Rummel

    3. Rev John Tanner born abt 1732 in Chesterfield Virginia and died in 1812 in Cape Giardeau Missour was my GGGgrandfather.. This is some info on him: His son was John Tanner who was captured by the Indians. was Baptist minister and a close associate of James Rucker. born in Va, before 1760 moved to NC, went to KY about 1780 lived in Madison, Woodford, Boone, Shelby, and Caldwell Counties in KY had wills in Missouri and in KY John Tanner was a Baptist preacher in Virginia, at a time when the law was that no ministers except those of the Church of England werepermitted to preach or teach publicly or privately. He was jailed atleast twice for preaching without a license. A monument was erected onthe site of the jail in 1925 to commemorate John Tanner and 5 otherjailed preachers. That monument is still there! John Tanner was alsoshot in the leg by a man who was irate that the Reverend had baptized hiswife. There is some confusion about the order and number of John'swives. Wife one may have been Dorcas or Susannah; his second wife (whosigned deeds as his wife until 1791) was Rachel Cain. He wed SallyRucker in July, 1792. The Rev. John Tanner died in 1812, Cape Girardeau,Missouri, after surviving the massive earthquake and moving away from theruins of the town. Book written about John Tanner: "The Family of Rev. John Tanner--BaptistPreacher" by Marguerite Hussey (now deceased) Also mentioned in Sudie Rucker Woods' book and mentioned in a history onbaptist ministers. Also mentioned in the Lyman Draper papers at University of Wisconsin. 1770-jailed with 6 other men for preaching (William Webber, JosephAnthony, Augustin Eastin, John Weatherford, Jeremiah Walker, & DavidTinsley) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Merle C Rummel" <cliff@rtkonline.com> To: <brethren@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 18, 2008 8:03 PM Subject: Re: [BRE] Donner/Danner/Tanner > >> I have researched the family for a number of years as I am a >> Donner descendant. 1. [BRE] Donner/Danner/Tanner
    2. Merle, I had been off the list for several years, but am back on now since a good friend sent me a recent post of yours regarding the Donner/Danner/Tanner families. I have researched the family for a number of years as I am a Donner descendant. I think I can be of help to you and am asking you for help with your information that George Donner Sr. was born in York County, Pa. and that he was a grandson of Michael and a son of Jacob and Elizabeth Boechtel. I have never been able to prove the parentage of George Sr. although I always suspected he was a brother to Samuel. I am familiar with this Jacob and Elizabeth from my research, but had not made the connection. Do you have some proof of his parentage or is this a theory because of the Brethren connection? I first found him in Rowan County, thanks mainly to Adelaide Fries books which are in the Houston library. I followed them into Jessamine County, Ky. and then on to the various counties in Indiana, and to Illinois. After they arrive in Jessamine daughter Lydia married James Walters in 1806, Elizabeth married William Walters 1808, George, Jr. md. Susannah Holloway 1809, Susannah md. Micajah Organ 1817. George Jr. who goes on to be infamous as the Capt. of the Donner party married Susannah who was the daughter of Nathan Holloway and Mary Hunter - Mary Hunter was the proven daughter of Jacob Hunter, Sr. and his wife Mary Smith, daughter of Peter Smith who was also a Brethren. George Davidson, who signed the permission for George Jr. and Susannah Holloway to marry was her stepfather . By 1817 I find George Sr. in Jefferson County, Indiana and during the same time frame George Jr. has gone to Decatur County, Ind. as do Elizabeth & William Walters and Lydia and James Walters. Elizabeth and William and James Walters are all buried in Kingston Cemetery, Fugit Township, Decatur County, Ind. Lydia and her children settle in Sangamon County, Illinois and she is buried at West's Cemetery in Auburn Township as is Susannah. John is buried in Portland Oregon and I know Tobias is buried in Central Illinois, probably either Menard or DeWitt County, but have not located a site for him. You already know Mary and John Dick are at Thayer Cemetery and of course George and Jacob died in the mountains. . I have always wondered about the connection between George, Sr. and John Tanner who I have read a lot about. Do you have any idea what the connection was? The children of Captain George Donner and his first wife Susannah Holloway were: Mary [called Polly] born Abt. 1810 md. George Weaver and 2nd Adam Harmon. Died 4 October 1896, buried Fell Cemetery, Libertyville, Iowa William born 3 May 1812 married Elizabeth Hunter, died 22 July 1867, buried Oak Hill Cemetery, Springfield, Sangamon, Ill. Sarah born 13 April 1813, md. John Torrence, died September 1849 buried Taylor Cemetery, Sangamon County, Illinois [This is my line] Lydia married John Vancil and is buried somewhere in Idaho according to old family information Elizabeth born 19 Feb. 1817, married Absolom Harmon, buried Old Berlin Cemetery, Sangamon County, Illinois Susannah born 6 April 1818 md. Barneybeth Marshall Blue, died 8 August 1894 buried Hurds Chapel Cemetery, Laclede, Mo. Obviously I have a lot more information on this family so I would be pleased to try and answer any question or fill in any blanks for you. Thank you for any assistance you might offer. I do not have any listing giving Church Members in the Brethren Churches - there is almost NO record of these churches at all.  (In Jessamine Co KY - they were called "Moravians" - but they came from Brethren communities back in Maryland, and their children, as they moved north across the Ohio River, were Brethren).  Yes, I have identified those about whom I have found information indicating that they were Brethren. I am basing these choice of families on given connections to Brethren (usually back in Pennsylvania/Maryland - but sometimes in the Carolinas - or when some of the children or grandchildren are given as Brethren when they move on west.  I have started to make family connections by marriage (but far from complete) - yes, I have them indexed - and am working from that  (this has helped me identify names that have been given as connected to Brethren Churches, or in Brethren communities - as husbands of daughters in these families).  I am not attempting to give full family sheet information.  On the children in each family - I am trying to name all the children, given their birth and death years, the marriage -to whom, and the place of residence (at least where they died) (no -not the place of marriage).  I am well aware, that children will marry, and join the church of their spouse. In some cases, this is because their own family has left the Brethren -and my book will tell about Brethren Churches who became Christian Churches - or Methodist Churches - primarily because.Annual Meeting "rejected" them or "ejected" them. My research in Kentucky does find some of these family names listed as members of churches in the vicinities where there seems to have been Brethren Church groups.  I am hoping to identify some of these children/grandchildren as early names on membership lists of these later churches (Baptist - Christian - Methodist). I am showing migration on west (Illinois - Missouri - Iowa, mostly) hoping there will be identification of some of these, as Brethren who moved west.  I already know that some of them are Christian (Disciples of Christ, mostly) and others Universalist - whether they remained locally, or were of those who moved on. I do not include one Miller family yet.  I found it in some information among the southern Indiana counties, where these early Brethren Churches were located - their own family group identifies them as Dunkers, from the Carolinas, very soon after 1800.  They became involved in the Revival, and joined the New Lights (a group that helped form the Christian Church).  I have not yet received information from the family reunion. But this is the basic theme in much of my research - these were Brethren (I'm finding enough that I am naming them as fundamentally Pietists - part of our Brethren origin).  As a result of the New Madrid Earthquake, with the resulting Revival, resulted in differences between these and the Eastern Brethren, who began to move west after 1820 (the opening of the National Road - 1826 -to Richmond IN - 1837 to the Mississippi).  Annual Meeting rejected these, when they refused to accept "new traditions" established by the Annual Meeting Elders during and following the Revolution (the Anabaptist part of our heritage).  These "Frontier Brethren" (and only a few of them become identified with the "Far Western Brethren" - of northern Illinois, of about 1850) then find religious associations with others of like faith - some of them are New Lights and Campbellites (the Christian Church), some are Methodists (an English form of Pietism), some are Universalists, others remain Baptist (our name then was "Baptist Brethren" - only in 1830 did we adopt the name "German Baptist Brethren") and associate with English Baptists who have moved into the local communities (in many cases these still retain some of the distinctive Brethren Practices) - and some move on west - as Brethren - or not as Brethren any more. Several years go - I did a similar presentation of what were suspected Brethren Communities in Kentucky -with some names attached to each - these are the culmination of that study.  The "book" is still being worked on - this is just an attempt -for those of you who have information -to keep me from making serious errors (I do like my books to be accurate!) 1. Re: [BRE] Fouts Cemetery
    2. The Center United Brethren Church Cemetery is also called the Fouts Cemetery. The cemetery is a rather large active burial ground that includes many early Carroll/Cass Counties, Indiana citizens. It is not a Church of the Brethren Cemetery. The church is still active. It is near Young America in a very rural setting. Many of my ancestors are buried in this cemetery. Bill Christopher -----Original Message----- From: Ron Snowden <nedwons@mac.com> To: BRETHREN@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 16 Jun 2008 11:37 pm Subject: [BRE] Fouts Cemetery Several days ago Merle provided data on the Fouts family, tracking their movement to and from Kentucky. Jacob and Mary Magdelina Fouts were buried in the Fouts Cemetery--which I am thinking is the one in Yount America, Cass County--now called the Center Church of the Brethren Cemetery. This is perhaps 150 miles away--a long way in 1820. I am not finding any other Fouts Cemetery near there. Can anyone shed any information on this? All help will be greatly appreciated. ------------------------ Search the Archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/BRETHREN ------------------------ Support Our Sponsoring Agency The Fellowship Of Brethren Genealogists (FOBG) For further information contact Ron McAdams mailto:McAdamsr@hotmail.com ------------------------ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BRETHREN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. Re: [BRE] Fouts Cemetery
    2. Ron Snowden
    3. Indiana--Cass County, which is near Logansport. I too visited this cemetery a month ago, but had little information to go on at the time and chose to save a thorough visit for another time. It is today a fairly large cemetery for a "pioneer" burial ground. Just a few miles to the east is the Hahn-Anoka Cemetery, which was in some way tied to a local Church currently called the Anoka United Methodist Church. The current building was built in 1913, and the cornerstone says Anoka Methodist Episcopal Church. Many Rodericks, Ulerichs, and Hoovers are buried there, for which I have some documented as "German Baptist" according to the "History of Cass County, Indiana" and family tradition and research from a family professional genealogist says the church established in the early part of the century "broke away" during the 1880's during the upheaval. Family tradition has it that my ggaunt, Alice (Riley) Roderick, became a "Dunkard Preacher" and active abolitionist/prohibitionist/ suffragette/ Her husband was John A. Roderick. At least 1/4 of the Hahn Cemetery interments are my family. The Hahn-Anoka Cemetery can be viewed on-line at http://incass-inmiami.org/cass/cemeteries/ along with all the other cemeteries of Cass County. I indexed and photographed it for Indiana USGENWEB. I hope this helps, and is interesting and informative. 3. I did not drive up to the Clark Co IN, Fouts Cemetery, but both Steve Fouts (retired school teacher of New Washington IN, who has a berry farm about 2 miles north of town) and his sister (Patricia Jackson, if my scrap of paper is correct -I made contact with Steve first, he referred me to his sister, who knew the family history) made reference to it. The cemetery was explained as north of New Washington, north of where Steve Fouts lives. They both stated how their ancestors, Jacob and Mary Fouts (FT134 on my sheets -whose Bible Record is at Indianapolis) were buried there, and descendants. (I think Patricia said that included their parents - I talked to both of these on the phone -not finding Steve at home when I stopped at his house.) While they used the name "Fouts Cemetery" - that might not be the official name. From something Patricia said, it probably is on, or near, the farm of Jacob Fouts Going north from New Washington, the highway, IN62, makes a bend eastward, going to Madison IN. Steve Fouts lived a little south of the bend, and a road there at the corner, goes strait north . As I understood, the Fouts Cemetery was off of that "strait-north" road. Patricia knew of the Olive Branch Cemetery (some 4 miles south of New Washington), but had not been there. There in Clark Co, they have individuals who are individually responsible for each of the several cemeteries. The primary interest in Clark Co seems to be the Silver Creek Church and Cemetery, which is a very early Association that became Disciples of Christ (I copied its early membership list). It did not include any Brethren names with which I was familiar, but the Olive Branch Church (or whatever its original Brethren name was), after the ban on Elder Adam Hostetler (buried there), became Disciples. There is some 8-10 miles between the two cemeteries. That was quite a distance before the automobile, and with time and distance and all the events I was exploring, they knew nothing of the Brethren nor of any Brethren connections.
