In reference to the request regarding a Church of the Brethren in Spokane, WA in the early 1900s, there are 4 references in the Brethren Encyclopedia. Spokane CoB, WA, located in Spokane and Whitman Cos. Since A.N. Huffman moved to Tekoa in 1877, he and later Brethren settlers in eastern Washington appealed to the denomination for ministerial leadership. Visiting ministers attempted to fill this need. By 1888 some 30 Brethren were counted as residents in a large area. An attempted organization in 1890 was thwarted by bad weather. It was not until Oct. 21-22, 1899, that the Spokane congregation was organized with 33 members at the home of Huffman, 50 miles from Spokane. Jacob N. Gwin of Idaho was chosen as elder and D.M. Click and J. Harmon Stover called as ministers. Spokane developed 3 meeting places for worship: Wayside, Waverly, and Tokoa. The last named was the first to build a meetinghouse (1903) and became a separate congregation in 1909. Members living near Chewelah had already been separately organized in 1906 as Mount Hope. When the North Spokane body was organized in 1920, the First Spokane congregation gradually dwindled. It was last listed on denominational rolls in 1924 with 46 members. Those serving as pastors and elders were Click, J. Jordan, J.G. Miller, H.C. Longanecker, Charles M. Yearout, Stephen Johnson, Erwin Weaver, W.H Tigner, and W.C. Lehman. Spokane, WA, North Spokane CoB. Mission work in North Spokane began in 1919, and later in the same year a congregation was organized by the District Mission Board. In 1920 Stephen Johnson was the first minister of the 28 members; by 1921 there were 47 members. The number of members grew steadily, reaching 116 in 1933. Members used a meetinghouse on Rich Ave. and Martin St. There was considerable turnover in pastoral leadership and many years in which nonresident elders were listed in charge of the congregation. Among those serving as pastors or elders were Johnson, Sherman Clapper, J.J. Filbrun, W.H. Tigner, J,U.G. Stiverson, R.F. Hiner, O.B. Gregory, D. Warren Shock, C.E. Holmes. John O. Streeter, Harvey H. Hanson, Jay V. Eller, and David Ensign. North Spokane was last listed on denonimational rosters in 1941. The building was sold to the Latter Day Saints. Sources for the articles were from the book, Brethren on the Pacific Slope by Gladys Muir, and Yearbook (1920-1941). There were no references to the Wagoner or Estvelt names. There are 2 other short articles on the Tekoa and Mount Hope congregations. Several of the ministers and elders named were from central Washington churches. Doris Dibert (formerly of Wenatchee, WA)

Does anybody have any connection to the Breathren Church in Washington State? I am researching the Wagoner's and Esveldt's and I have a diary which states that Nell Esvelt Rickard Wagoner was united with the Brethren church in Spokane Washington. Based on where in the paragraph the statement regarding the Breathren Church is .. .I would estimate the time frame to be about 1900. However, the Bowman death records you found in the Missouri Archives do not match the ones I have listed. They do match another Bowman family (also Brethren) who lived in Johnson County, MO. The death records you found all pertain to this family. The Gospel Messenger entry for July 18, 1895, p. 462 listing Fannie Belle Bowman as the daughter of Elder David and Susan Bowman from the Prairie View congregation in Morgan County, MO, matches the death entry on the sheet I have. Most likely these are all children of Elder David and Susan Bowman and not the Johnson County MO Bowmans. The info I have has the Berks line descending from the Meyer spouse, and the Lancaster/Lebanon line from the Mauer spouse. The name was spelled Pasour for those that migrated to North Carolina. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of gale honeyman Sent: Monday, May 02, 2011 10:36 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [BRE] Stump Beshore etc & Beeghley question Bill, Hans Jacob Böshaar born c1645, married 1) 1681 Reformed Church in Zweibrücken, Pfalz, Anna Gertrudt Meyer, 2) 1693 Hornbach, Pfalz, Anna Christina Maurer. Well, "muddy the waters" it is! This age creates a calculated birth date of 3 Mar 1819, which doesn't match any other source that I know of. Maybe there is a transcription mistake in the Gospel Messenger obit? All kidding aside, it's good to have another source. Thanks, Dennis, for sending that in. This establishes the death date pretty definitively as 16 May 1896. Now, if we could just resolve the birth date... On another note, Benjamin Royer b. 1767, d. 1841 (buried in Lehn's Cemetery), m. Annie Hallacher. I am not sure, but found "Royer" farm on Royer Rd in Lancaster Co. and believe that Charles Hallacher lived there in the mid 1800s. Seems likely that he may have married into the Royer family since they owned land nearby. Would like more info on this farm but have not researched it. Info came from a brochure found on farms of that period while visiting the local historical society there . Much of the early Royer family history was recorded by descendant Michael Zug, b. 1832. The Stump names I see are familiar to me, but from earlier generations. Although this information is several generations earlier than is being discussed it may be interesting to Stump researchers. A Casper Stump was a brother of John Stump, and they owned adjacent properties at the junction of Northkill and Tulpehocken Creeks in Berk's County. Abraham, Adam, Michael and Christopher (Stophel) Stump owned adjacent properties in Heidelberg Township, in present day Lebanon County. A George Graff also owned an adjacent property. Another neighbor was John Moore, the father-in-law of Durst Thommen (II), who had a number of family members associated with Ephrata. One the same day Stophel warranted his property in Heidelberg Township, he also warranted property adjacent Johann George Beshore. This property was on Little Swatara Creek in Bethel Township, Berks County. Another neighbor was a George Graff (Jr.) or John Groff, depending on which vintage survey map you view. Johann George Beshore married Maria Catherine Stump, the sister of Casper & John Stump. Johann George Beshore was one of the original members of the Little Swatara Congregation in Berks County. The Berks County will of John Stump lists Casper, Abraham and Michael as brothers. In 1743, Adam Stump was naturalized, and took the oath of allegiance, and several days later Christian and John Stump were naturalized but did not take the oath, indicating an Anabaptist/Quaker religion. There is second John Stump who lived in Leacock Township, and was associated with Ephrata. I am not sure of his connection with the Lebanon/Berks County Stumps. However, I believe he is connected to a Stump family that moved to Somerset County in the Revolutionary War period. The Stumps and Beshore's of Lebanon/Berks were from the Schoharie settlement in New York. Casper Stump was a guardian of a child of John Feick, who is an ancestor of the Brethren Fike's. John was Amish, but immigrated with the Amish father of German Baptist Michael Beeghley. Bill Thomas

Merle Rummel, Thanks for the info! I hope that it helps others too. David Myers & Gale Honeyman, I have a copy of Adam Stump's Bible with his family's births. It was found at the DAR Library in Wsh DC. I'm preparing the fourth volume of 'CCO & Area Bible Records' for the Columbiana Co Chapter OGS and have been searching everywhere for Bible records of persons living in (or passing through after one generation) CCO or any of the townships that touch the county. This record shows: 'Adam Son of Benjamin and Mary Stump was born March 3rd AD 1818'. The last 18 is smeared. As for the reference to Casper Benjamin Stump, I believe this is in error. There was a Casper Stump 1767 - 1837 who is also buried in Moultrie Chapel Cem. This family came after the 1830 census & is found buying land in 1835. It is believed that Casper & Ben were brothers & their father may have been Casper. I have no source for this speculation. Casper's son, Michael, is shown to have been born in York Co, Pa in the CCO Death Records (vol 3 pg 519) maintained by the county. As for the tombstone information on FInd-A-Grave (what a wonder aid in finding information!) concerning Casper, I would like to caution everyone that most of the time people do not go and 'see' any particular tombstone. They accept what has been written in the county's tombstone inscription books. I know for fact that not all of the cemetery's old, difficult to read, tombstones in CCO were 'chalked'. There may have been error when reading them. Also, there is some difference of opinion as to who were the parents of Casper's wife, 'Sarah' Fissel 1789 - 1852, with John & Margaret Fissel suggested & some of the researchers of the Fissels saying that 'Elizabeth' Fissel (same dates, w/o Casper) was the d/o Henry Fissel. Was her full name Elizabeth Sarah? Again, I hope that this info helps others. Pat McArtor
To update Merle's information and for those interested in locating Brethren burials in Johnson County MO, there are 4 major burial grounds for Brethren related to 4 of the 9 churches established in Johnson County, MO, from prior to the Civil War to present day. The Wampler cemetery is the oldest, the Roop cemetery the youngest of the four. The major Dunker cemeteries were: Mineral Creek/Leeton cemetery mentioned by Merle. This is now the city cemetery for the town of Leeton and is located just to the west of the town. It is the largest of the Brethren cemeteries. The Centerview city cemetery, located at the edge of the town of Centerview was the original Dunker cemetery to the Centerview church. It, too, is large. The Wampler Cemetery, aka Dunker Cemetery, about 10 miles northwest of the town of Knob Noster, is related to the Walnut Creek church which split during the 1881-2 divisions. The Roop Cemetery located about a mile south of the town of Warrensburg is the smallest of the four cemeteries but contains nearly all Brethren burials. It was connected to the South Warrensburg church begun in the 1880's. All four of these cemeteries are well cared for and continue to be used by Brethren in Johnson County. More recently, the two city cemeteries in Warrensburg are also used by Brethren. All but the Mineral Creek cemetery is on-line. Not sure if this is useful but may be worth considering since the family names, of Royer, Zug, Groff and Hollinger (? Hallacher) are intertwined. Joseph Royer married Maria Martin, daughter of Martin Jr. and Anna (Wenger) Martin (Mennonites) about 1805 in Lancaster Co. She was b. 1787, d. in 1820 & is buried in the Tulpehochen Cemetery. The stone is written in German and Spelling is Reyer. Martin Martin is the son of Barbara Groff Martin & Martin Martin Joseph Royer purchased a tannery from his brother -in-law, Abraham Zug, in Rapho Twp. Abraham m. Daniel Royer's daughter, & Joseph's sister, Susanna Royer. Joseph remarried & moved to Ohio after Maria's death. He is buried in Stark Co. 1832. Perhaps Adam's obit in the 1896 Gospel Messenger on p 382 will answer the question or maybe muddy the waters further. Findagrave is listing him with the dates of Feb 10, 1815-May 16, 1896 buried in Moultrie Chapel Cemetery, Homeworth, Columbiana County OH. Pat McArtor Interesting - I didn't have this much!!! I have been to the grave of this Abraham Stump - it is in Potato Creek State Park, there south of South Bend IN. Sarah Burkholder, daughter of the minister John Burkholder and Catherine Stump (dau of my Solomon), married Geroboam Stump, son of above Abraham Stump and Rebecca Hildebrand, and lived northwest of Teagarden IN (St Joseph Co - south of South Bend). I have seen their stones in the cemetery near there (Pine Creek church) Catherine Burkholder, an older daughter, married Jacob Stump - a brother of "Geroby"., and lived a couple farms away. They had no children of their own, bur raised several other children. Solomon Burkholder, an older brother, married a Sarah Stump, but I did not locate her parents - they did live near south of Geroby and Sarah (Burkholder) Stump, in Marshall Co IN Somewhere in my files I do have a listing on this family group - they were said to have come down from Canada to western Pennsylvania. I have long wondered if they had connections to my line. But their dates of moving OUT OF Canada are about the dates when my Abraham Stump moved TO Canada. Merle C Rummel
