    1. Re: [BRE] Vintage Maps...Burkhart's
    2. William Thomas
    3. John: I am familiar with the Burkhart family of Allegheny Township, which my wife is a descendent. The patriarch of her family is Jacob Burkett who owned property near Brush and Wills Creeks. The 1816 map location is off a tad, if this is Jacob's property. I am unclear as to their religious denomination. My wife's ties to the Burkett's begin with her great grandmother, who was Roman Catholic. However, the cemetery where her great-great Burkett grandparents are buried is not Catholic. The New Baltimore area of Allegheny Township had a significant Roman Catholic population, but the area where Jacob lived had several Lutheran Churches in the 1876 Atlas. There also was a Burkett/Burkhart family that lived in Bedford County that was close to German Baptist areas. The nearest German Baptist community I am aware of near Allegheny Township where west of the mountain ridge along present Route 31, on the Stony Creek and Brothersvalley Township line. Bill Thomas

    3. Neither do I have anything on these two daughters. Don Bowman descends from one of the daughters who married a Pfoutz. Gale ************* Here's what I have gathered on the children of Elder Martin Gaby - #2 - Susan (Susanna) Gaby (1767-1855) married Peter Pfoutz - lived in Montgomery Co OH (Don's line?) (4 children - 3 [Mary, Jacob, Susan] remained in Montgomery Co - one [Martin] came to Indiana - where?) #8 - Esther Gaby (1777-1849) married John (Johannes) Pfoutz - they lived in Maryland - Esther was buried at Union Bridge MD (Carroll Co), Johannes died at Johnsville MD (Frederick Co) (4 miles away), which would be the Beaver Dam Church (half way in between) -. (sons of Jacob Pfoutz/Mary Bach) ************ #4 - Isaac Gaby (1771- ) - m. Magdalena Frantz - to Botetourt Co VA - to Washington Co TN - 3 ch #5 - Jacob Gaby (1772-1826) - m. Lydia Bashore - lived Berks Co PA - 7 ch #7 - Daniel Gaby (1776-1855) - m. Susanna Schneider - lived Berks Co PA #10 - Salome Gaby (1781-1867) - m. Daniel Fiant - to Indiana Territory - to Fayette Co IN I do not have much information on: #1 - Catherine (1766-1855) married a Stump #3 - Abraham (1769-1830) - 1/m - Elizabeth Schneider 2/m Catherine Rauts #6 - Mary (1774- #9 - Martin Jr (1779 married Susan Traut #11 - Elizabeth (1783- #13 - Solomon (1787- married Elizabeth Price - a note on the #12 John Gaby (1785-c1835) - married Hannah - came to Indiana - lived near #10 Salome Gaby Fiant - in 1816 record - lived west of Brownsville His only child on whom I have information was Susannah - (1st ch?) born 9 June 1802 - in Maryland John was born 15 Mar 1785 - which would make him just 17 years old when Susannah was born also, he was not living up in Berks Co PA, but down in Frederick Co/Carroll Co MD at the time. (with or near his sister Esther?) John's wife - Hannah - is somewhat older than he (1820 Census - born between 1770 and 1780) - or the decade older than John. I really would like to know who she was - I suggest that we investigate the marriages in Frederick Co MD - about 1802, when John got married - probably there. Now - why was he with his sister, instead of up at his home? An answer - could be why my ancestress - gr gr grandmother and her twin sister were living with an aunt - 50 miles from home - when each of them had a baby (at 16 - out of wedlock). Back then, family shipped a "problem" to another community (family connection) to avoid too much gossip. (my mother's aunt told her to tell me - to "shut my mouth!" - when I asked) And John's father was Elder Michael Gaby! just cogitating - need info Merle

    3. Merle, I believe that I can resolve most of your questions. 1. The Stump family bible (photo via Linda Houyouse e-mail) says, "Adam Son of Benjamin and Mary Stump." This may be new information for you. 2. The birth date you have for Catharine (Stump) Longanecker most likely is wrong. "Alexander Mack the Tunker and Descendants" -- Rev. Freeman Ankrum (1943) has the dates as Nov. 7, 1815 and Nov. 15, 1879. Her age in the census isn't consistent but it fits better with a birth year of 1815 than with a birth year of 1818. 3. Lydia Longanecker (m. Adam Stump) and Samuel Longanecker (m. Catharine Stump) were gr-gr-grandchildren of Alexander Mack (1679-1735), through their mother, Sarah (Mack) Longanecker. 3. Adam Stump Died May 16, 1896 Aged 78 Y. 2 M. 13 D. This translates to a birth date of 3 Mar 1818, which is the date listed in the family bible and in "Alexander Mack the Tunker and Descendants" -- Rev. Freeman Ankrum (1943). ************* This means that I need better information on Adam Stump (admitted, this is not my direct line) - but is a collateral line here in Northern Indiana. My information gave an unidentified first wife for Benjamin - but this date gives conflict to his sister, Catherine (born 28 Oct 1818, York Co PA) and places him as a son of the former "second" wife - Anna Spatz. (Adam and Catherine married brother and sister - Samuel and Lydia Longenecker) Also, I am interested in the connection to Alexander Mack. Both of this line, and that of the minister, Francis Stump, who died in Muhlenberg Co KY. (I'm aware of Freeman Ankrum, but not of this book.) Merle C Rummel

    1. Re: [BRE] Graff Family Brethren
    2. Dwayne Wrightsman
    3. Thank you, Ruth, for your account of Franz Graff (Grove) of Grosswinternheim who immigrated in 1748. Are you familiar with the religion of this family after they immigrated? The Franz Graff family that I am studying is the one from Rafz, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. Franz Graff (1734-1819) immigrated at age 10 with his mother Verena [Neukomm] and his siblings in 1744 and settled thereafter in Rapho Township, Lancaster County. Some of his children became members of the Conestoga Brethren Congregation. Franz's second wife was Eva Hamacher, Brethren, whose father, Adam Hamacher, was a minister at Great Swatara Creek in 1770. This Franz Graff family is one of five Graff families that I have found who came over as Mennonites, but who had family members who joined the Brethren after settling in Pennsylvania. The other four Graff families were descended from Mennonite Graff families of Bäretswil, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland. Three of these Graff families joined Beissel's Ephrata Community with some of the children subsequently joining the Conestoga Brethren. The fourth Graff family (Groh, Grove) had Brethren connections at Little Swatara Creek. I am writing a short article for this October's issue of Mennonite Family History on Graff emigrants whose immediate family members became Brethren and, so far, have only found five such families. There are no doubt others that I don't know about at this juncture. 3. I'm sorry but I've never researched anything on the Graff family beyond this. Ruth -----Original Message----- From: Dwayne Wrightsman Sent: Thursday, May 05, 2011 7:46 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [BRE] Graff Family Brethren Thank you, Ruth, for your account of Franz Graff (Grove) of Grosswinternheim who immigrated in 1748. 2. William Thomas
    3. Merle: I find this quite interesting. You have Maria Catherina married to Martin Guntrum. Most genealogies have her married to my ancestor Alexander Thomas. I do have records that show the name of Alexander's wife is Catherine (from deeds), and that her last name was Beshore (from her son's death certificate), but nothing that ties her to Johann Georg Boshaar. There were a number of Catherine Beshore's from this period. Do you recall the source of this information? I have found that much of the information on Alexander Thomas is as bogus as a three-dollar bill, and his wife's connection to Johann Georg may be another example.
