Merle, Suzy brought up a point that I'm well aware of - It was very common for people to migrate between the 2 counties. And that is true no matter where your area of search is located. Just as it was common for people to migrate between Butler, OH and Franklin or Union, IN. And that brings me to your msg [unless you're still mowing grass :-) You state that John/Phoebe had a son William born 1793. Is that proven? But let's say it's true. Where does his birth year come from? If 1793 can't be proven, my Wm is proven born 1796 and in KY. Since John/Phoebe are proven to marry in FranklinCo, VA, is it possible they moved out and into KY before 1796 and then moving on to IN?? You also state that all of Potter John's children [minus Abe] moved to ParkeCo from 1818 and on. Tobias Miller is listed in the ParkeCo History as follows: "Judge .Strange and Tobias Miller settled in Raccoon valley, in 1820, as also George and Alexander Kirkpatrick." But here's my problem...... 1807 IN Terr census 6 Miller families with 1 John Miller 1813 Franklin Tax List John Sr John Jr [not necessarily father and son] Daniel Tobias 1820 FranklinCo census 16 Miller families ....11 in BATH Twp with 3 John Millers ....3 in Blooming Grove ....1 in Brookville, 1 John Miller ....1 in Union 1830 FranklinCo census 11 Miller families with 4 John Millers 1830 UnionCo census [formed from northern Franklin taking part of BATH Twp] 22 Miller families with 2 John Millers [one is Col. John] 1830 ParkeCo census 9 Miller families with 3 John Millers 1830 FountainCo census 11 Miller families with 4 John Millers Note that in 1830 we have THIRTEEN John Millers among these 4 counties. Soooo.....with all these Miller families, how can it be proven that all but one of Potter John's sons went to ParkeCo? How are all the other sons of these other Miller fams proven NOT to have gone to Parke? Why couldn't John's sons have gone to Fountain, Vermillion, Montgomery or Putnam? Are there land grants plotted out or deeds between father and son or wills that name children that have been found for any of these early Millers that helps to sort them out? and inviting all others to join the party. In 1998 Merle wrote: Those of you that know (or suspect) your family went through Kentucky in this time, please contact me. I'll be glad to help you with families I do know. Merle C Rummel, Church Historian ------------------------- So here's my story. The Timberman family Abraham Timberman [bn 1782 PA] descended from Johann Jacob Zimmerman [bn 1642] of Wurttemberg, Germany, a Lutheran theologian and university professor. Abraham and several brothers left PA and [for reasons unknown] moved to BlountCo, TN, where he married Nancy Hawkins [bn c1781 NC] in 1801. c1811 this family removed to FranklinCo, IN, where in Oct 1823 his daughter, Martha, married William MILLER. Abe and son-in-law William Miller then removed to ParkeCo, IN. The following is lengthy but mentions many names that may be familiar to some of you. "Historical Sketch of Parke Co (IN)": Abraham TIMBERMAN, William and Edward BROCKWAY, Jacob BOWSHER, Samuel ARNOT, Lawson HUFFMAN and David SHIRK were the first settlers of Liberty township - 1822 to 1825. "The Early History of Liberty Township, Parke Co, In", by Samuel C Madden: "The first settlers must have been early in the twenties and I have long wished I could know who the very first comers to the township were. But I have sought in vain. I subscribed for the large map of the Co that was published several years ago with the assurance that it would give the early reminiscences of the township but it failed to materialize; in fact, I believe there were less than two lines across the map in the description of the township. But from the very best information that I can get I think it must have been Abram TIMBERMAN who settled about one mile southeast of Lodi. He was a member of the regular PREDESTINARIAN BAPTIST denomination and here gathered around him quite a large church for so early a day, say early in the twenties. They were composed of the CARMANS, MILLERS, THOMPSONS, SHIRKS in the immediate neighborhood and later on they were joined by others from adjoining neighborhoods. James MARKS, the SWAIMS, STANTONS, and others which constituted quite a large church. They worshipped for a number of years in Mr Timberman's dwelling house nearby where the Miller graveyard now is. After several years they built a church house on range nine about one mile south of the Parke and Fountain Co line, known as the Shirk meeting house. Rev David Shirk was elder or pastor for several years. After his death which was about 1860, '61 or '62 the church declined and has been laid down ever since the close of the war." William Miller is my brick wall. And while I am an experienced researcher, I have spent only the last 2 days following this particular angle. You will likely find me ignorant about much of what you've known for years. The first appearance of Wm was his marriage rec to Martha in 1823. While I know Abe Timberman had family in ButlerCo, OH and while I knew there were many Millers in both Butler and Franklin, because my William was born [bible record] 1796 in KY [census], I couldn't find a way to connect any of the Franklin Millers to William. And in all the Miller history I've read from many online sites, no one seems to have claimed my Wiliam. I have also found much contradictory information on the same families with little, if any, sourcing. So I admit I have some ideas based on limited research about some connections but also confused about others. A tiny but possibly relevant clue was a conversation with my cousin several years ago that her mother had mentioned that she had heard from family member[s] our William Miller "knew" Daniel Boone. I could come to no conclusion in attempting to confirm this "maybe" clue. Then I came across Merle's series of posts on the Kentucky churches and realized I might have just found my first KY to IN connection. It seems even more likely that my William belonged to one of the Baptist churches who were booted out at the 1822 Annual Meeting with some of those families moving north into southern IN followed by William marrying in 1823. Here would be another clue. William seemed to have used the naming pattern of the times with his first 5 children named John, Abram, Nancy, Samuel and Mary. 1) John being Wm's father, 2) Abram being Martha's father, 3) Nancy being Martha's mother OR the name of BOTH their mothers, 5) Mary being Wm's mother. It is proven that 2 and 3 or correct, implying that Wm's father would be John and his mother Mary UNLESS she was also a Nancy. This brings me to the one John I've found in Franklin/Union Co, IN, who I believe could be Wm's parents - the man called COL. JOHN MILLER. What I've seen so far is that he is assumed to be a cousin of Potter John Miller. No apparent proof that this is a correct assumption. His family does not seem to be clearly defined or complete. Several sites have him married to Nancy Capper with a specific 1800 date in FranklinCo, VA. I have been unable to confirm this date [or her maiden name] using several dbases. The children who appear to be proven are Martin, John Jr, Elizabeth and Benjamin. But in reviewing the Franklin/Union online recs and the censi, the 1820 census shows him to have 2 older daughters and a son bn 1794-1804. This is who I believe is my William bn 1796, a son of Col. John and Nancy LNU Miller. I am very interested in hearing any and all comments that could help to prove or disprove any part of my theory. Elder Martin Gaby was the first pastor of the Oley Church (3rd Brethren Church in America), Berks Co PA. Two of his youngest children came here to Indiana Territory in the early days. Salome Gaby, wife of Daniel Fiant, came out in 1802, right after they were married, and settled at "Fiants Ford", the crossing of the Whitewater River (Delaware Indian Road), near now Yankeetown IN.. She was followed by her younger brother, John Gaby (wife: Hannah), who settled south of Salome, just west of Brownsville IN, on the road to John Conner's Trading Post (now Connersville IN). John Gaby had a daughter, Susannah, born in Maryland in 1802 (probably in the Beaver Dam area, where a sister lived - Esther, wife of John Pfoutz). We first have record of the John and Hannah family here in the Four Mile area, about 1814. In 1834 both families moved a few miles west, into Fayette Co IN, living just north of Springerville IN (which is on the same old road). John died before 1840, Hannah lived with Susannah and died before 1850. Susannah married Richard Strong, a medical doctor, in 1825. Richard died in 1848, Susannah died in 1883. The Strong Cemetery, on their farm, has headstones for Susannah and Richard, and a daughter, Henrietta. There are 8 more field stones as markers. (I really suspect that John and Hannah Gaby are buried here.) Daniel and Salome Gaby Fiant are buried on their farm, about a half mile west of the Strong House. Up until about 50 years ago, there were odd circumstances happening in the old Strong House. Footsteps would be heard climbing the steep steps to an upstairs bedroom, then a rocking chair, always left in the room, began to slowly rock. Lilac Perfume would often be smelled. One day , with the footsteps, a woman was seen entering the room, going toward the rocking chair. She wore a high collared blouse with a long flowing skirt, her hair was pulled up on top of her head. the person seeing the woman (as I remember, the mother of the lady telling me, a descendant), calmly said: "Susannah, you need to go!" - the woman disappeared, and none of the traces of her have been heard or seen since. As a preacher, and a scientist, this is hard for me to accept, but I do respect the person telling me of this. I think she told me the truth. These were Brethren Families. The New Bethel Brethren Church was on the corner of the Fiant farm. My wife's grandfather and gr grandfather went over there monthly to hold services. Her gr grandfather's second wife came from there, and is buried in the Cemetery at Springerville. Merle C Rummel

Bill, Although I cannot make a judgment through personal research, I have seen evidence that the Burkhardts/Burketts came from Berks County. I am stuck in my Shaffer research, but I strongly suspect they came from Berks County as well, and this is how I have been running into the Burkett information. There seems to be some parallel activity; my grandfather always said that "John Shaffer (Sr.) fought in the Revolutionary War" and that he "was Lutheran" and this also seems to be true of Jacob Burkett of Allegheny Township. No, I don't think they were German Baptist early, as in Berks County, but I do suspect influences in Somerset County. John Shaffer Jr. married Nancy Bechtel, daughter of Jacob Bechtel of Stony Creek Township. The Bechtels seem to have been Reformed or Lutheran in Somerset County, but are descended from the Mennonite Bechtels of Washington County, Maryland, and Berks County, Pennsylvania and some of their children became German Baptist. John Shaffer Jr.'s sister, Elizabeth Shaffer married John Gans Jr. of a strong German Baptist family, and another sister, Catherine Shaffer married Peter Trump in Stark County, Ohio, likely a Lutheran, but with ties to Klingamans who were/became German Baptist. Sisters Susanna Shaffer married David Blocher Hoff and Lydia Shaffer married Jacob Blocher Hoff in Ohio, and they were German Baptist. All very interesting, and had I more time I would work on figuring out the connections between all these families. I don't know if this will help or not , but there is a Burkett family web site. Lynn -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of john shafer Sent: Friday, May 20, 2011 8:24 AM To: Brethren Listserve Subject: Re: [BRE] Vintage Maps...Burkhart's Bill, Although I cannot make a judgment through personal research, I have seen evidence that the Burkhardts/Burketts came from Berks County. John Shaffer Jr.'s sis! ter, Elizabeth Shaffer married John Gans Jr. of a strong German Baptist family, and another sister, Catherine Shaffer married Peter Trump in Stark County, Ohio, likely a Lutheran, but with ties to Klingamans who were/became German Baptist. Sisters Susanna Shaffer married David Blocher Hoff and Lydia Shaffer married Jacob Blocher Hoff in Ohio, and they were German Baptist. All very interesting, and had I more time I would work on figuring out the connections between all these families. Bill, Thank you for your response. I ask this question out of curiosity because my Shaffer family seems to have been so influenced by the German Baptists even before becoming members in Wayne County, Ohio. They drop out of Lutheran Church Baptismal records very early in the 1800's even though the family was still living in the same place. According to the records of the Berlin Reformed/Lutheran Church the Shaffers, Cohenours and Burkharts/Burketts witnessed the baptism of each other's children: So these families must have been Lutheran or Reformed before 1800. (My grandfather claimed they were Lutheran.) Do you know where they lived prior to coming to Somerset County? I found a Burkett family in Berks County that seems to be a good fit. Jacob of Allegheny was a Rev. War Vet, and there was a Jacob Burkett in the Berks County war records. Of course this would tend to eliminate an early German Baptist connection. Bill, Thank you for this excellent tip! I can clearly see my ancestors' lands on the Allegheny Mountain in Somerset County along with their neighbors. Very enlightening. Thanks again for sharing this. Related to this, does anyone know if the Burkharts and Cohenours/Gochenours of Allegheny Township, Somerset County were German Baptist, or became German Baptist? We know that the John Gans family who lived nearby was German Baptist and moved to the Nimishillen settlement in Stark County, Ohio. One of my family (Elizabeth Shaffer) married John Gans Jr. John Shafer > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Date: Wed, 18 May 2011 22:30:06 -0400 > Subject: [BRE] Vintage Maps > > I am not sure if this was mentioned before, and if it was, I apologize.
