    1. [BRE] Elizabeth (McGregor) Davis obit (died 16 Sep 1896)

    3. I also am curious as to whether the wife of Jacob Z. Davis, Elizabeth (McGregor) Davis, has an obit in a Brethren magazine. Wayne Webb let me have access to an article on the expansion of the Germantown Church of the Brethren, and the article mentioned that Mrs. Davis was very regretful that she wasn't going to be able to live long enough to see the expansion of the church building take place. Her family was Presbyterian but, by this time, she may not have been. She died 16 Sep 1896 in San Francisco, CA. Thanks. 1. [BRE] Jacob Z. Davis obit (died 28 Oct 1896)
    2. David Myers
    3. I want to thank the people who weighed in on the issue of Brethren doctrine and Free Masonry. I was afraid that there wouldn't be a definitive conclusion to the question and it turns out that I was right. I do I have a few more arrows in my quiver for establishing the religion of Jacob Z. Davis. I'm curious if anyone on the list has access to an obit for Jacob Z. Davis, who died 28 Oct 1896 at the Continental Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. He was in Philadelphia to see to the process that he had started to build an expansion of the Germantown Church of the Brethren. Because of this, his death might have been listed in a Brethren magazine purely for that reason. The writer of the obit might have mentioned whether he was a member of the church or not. Just an idea. Thanks. David Myers ____________________________________________________________ 57 Year Old Mom Looks 27! 3. Good Morning! Just as info, just did a search of Marshall Co IL Deaths ... found something interesting? Geo Wise, Sr. supposedly died Oct 9, 1872, at Wenona, aged 80 years ... burial on Oct. 17, 1872. Unable to get a cemetery name. No mention of his wife's burial. However, their search engine states: Marshall County Obituaries and Death Notices: He has been a resident of this county for 13 years. George WISE, Sr. Oct 17, Wenona, Oct. 9, George Wise, Sr., aged 80 years ... He was married to Margarent Henslee of Licking county ..." A second marriage to a woman with the same first name? Wouldn't be the first time! Guess that only adds to the confusion ... The sale of Miller's Chance is very confusing to me because Abraham Miller who died in 1754 owned 1289 acres called Resurvey of Miller's Chance on Fishing Creek a branch of Monocacy. I don't know if the 432 acres Adam Miller sold was part of Abraham Miller's tract. Or, if they were related. 3. ---------------------------------------- Adam married Anthony Hardman's daughter and moved to Washington Co. PA with or after the Hardman family. Bob I have that Anthony Hardman moved to Bethlehem twp, Washington Co PA in 1781, then in 1789 they moved to Jefferson Co VA (Shelby Co KY) I have that Esther Hardman and Adam Harter were married in 1788. - she was 25 yrs old (5 yrs older than Adam) Either Adam chased Esther to Washington Co - to get married, or she did not move west with her parents. Any information? Adam and Esther moved to Elkhart Co IN about 1830. The children were all married in Preble Co OH (1812-1830) - when did they leave Kentucky and come up to Preble Co OH? Or - am I missing some information? Merle C Rummel

    3. Art: I have a copy of the 1776 non-enrollers list for Washington County, MD, that lists "Dunkars & Menonist" fines. The list includes Abraham Miller, David Miller, and David Miller son of Philip. It goes onto list an appraisal of guns (what ever that means) in 1777 and includes a Henry Miller. Point being there were several Miller's in Washington County, some of who were Dunkers or Mennonites, a name common to both denominations. If you move to the 1776 non-enroller list for Frederick County, MD, which includes Anthony Hardman and Nicholas Leatherman (I believe Daniel's brother), you have even more Millers. You have Jacob Miller, Jacob Miller s/o Adam, Abraham Miller, Peter Miller, Stephen Miller, Solomon Miller, Robert Miller, Henry Miller, Philip Miller, David Miller and Daniel Miller, all fined, and implying a Dunker/Mennonite/Quaker religious affiliation. So you have a lot of potential Millers your ancestor could be affiliated with. In case you are not familiar with the non-enroller listing, these are people who refused to show up for militia musters. They may have done this for religious reasons or they were loyalists. Having Amish Miller's in my family, it becomes quite challenging trying separate one Miller from another. Bill Thomas

    3. Can anyone help understand this Wise family's connection to Miller families in Maryland and Washington Co., Pa.? Specifically, >Peter Wise reportedly married Mary Magdalena Miller the daughter of Ludwig >Miller born 1740. I'm wondering if this >Elizabeth could have been Peter Wise's sister Maria Elizabeth born 1764 in >Carroll Co., Md.. >Where was the Wise family located in Westmoreland Co.? Certainly, these Wise and Miller families fit based on timing and location. But, I haven't been able to establish a definitive connection. Any insight would be appreciated. 3. The Adam Wise family was in the Ten Mile area beginning in at least 1770. According to Joseph B. Wise in the book The Wise Family,"Adam Wise and his family carried on the business of milling and distillation of wine in Germany, as well as in Maryland and Pennsylvania," pg. 14. It goes on to say, the land was originally in Westmoreland County and was a tomahawk improvement....... The land was patented by Peter Wise in 1788 as "The Fishery." The house still standing there was built around 1790. Adam Wise's youngest daughter, Judith, married "Rev" John Spohn son of Martin and Mary Magdalena (Leatherman) Spohn. Someone put this entire book online as their own work, although it wasn't. I do not know if it is still online. The book was compiled by Kathryn Swim Cummings and Rachel Jones Hayward and published in 1998. I have a lot more information on this family although I have not done any research for a long time. 3. The Whiskey Rebellion was prominent in this county. Is there a way I could talk about Brethren intolerance of alcohol but as well, whiskey was cheaper to ship east than was the grain? Or did Brethren report stills to the authorties? Brethren, including ministers and Elders, had whiskey stills. Those that did, normally had flour mills. The frontier miller would take half of the grain as payment for milling, but since almost all families had farms and grew their own grain, there was little sale for the excess grain (flour). The common solution was to make it into whiskey, which had a large sale. There was little "shipping" of the whiskey, it was sold locally. Few Brethren drank whiskey, they did believe in "Temperance" (which in that time meant "not too much" - not total prohibition as it is now interpreted as). The Brethren did use several Wines (Apple, Peach, etc) and hard Cider (2% alcohol - in order to preserve it for use over a whole year - otherwise it turned to Apple Cider Vinegar - I have found it normal for families to use 10 barrels of Hard Cider a year). The "temperance movement" came some years later -about 1850). The Brethren decided to eliminate wine from the Communion Service some 30 years later. Migration to far western Pennsylvania (became Washington Co) began following the French and Indian War. You would need to check the families (cemetery names) to find when they "came west". I have a number of families who came on to Kentucky. I will now need to check the Wise name. I did not include that family in my original research. I only recorded the marriage of Elizabeth Miller, daughter of Jacob Miller and Catherine Minnick, to Henry Wise. They came to the Bullskin area of Clermont Co OH. I did not check on the parentage of Henry. Could you give me some of the other names? It was 1751 when the Eckerlin brothers moved from Dunker Bottom, on the New River, Virginia, and went to the Monongahela River (Dunker's Creek) on the Virginia (West Virginia)-Pennsylvania border. They were taken captive to Quebec. They were Ephrata Brethren, who objected to the Superintendant Conrad Beisel, and traveled "400 miles toward the setting sun" in 1745, moving on about the time of a Shawnee Indian incursion on the New River. .Merle C Rummel

    1. [BRE] Brethren "significance" and national significance
    2. J.A. Florian
    3. Still doing the papers for historical preservation on the oldest brick church west of the Alleghenies. Two parts address "significance". 1. of the place itself AND / OR 2. of a person or persons associated with the place. Would it wash to talk about the Brethren being the first persons migrating to that county? They were there before any "towns" were formed. How their peaceful ways allowed them to befriend the Indians with little conflict, despite the conflicts that closed forts and forced other settlers back? How Washington Co PA was a gateway to the West and many Brethren went out to establish churches in other States over many decades? Would Elder John Wise be "significant" enough of a figure to include? Was Elder John Wise a significant figure in a "national" way? The Whiskey Rebellion was prominent in this county. Is there a way I could talk about Brethren intolerance of alcohol but as well, whiskey was cheaper to ship east than was the grain? Or did Brethren report stills to the authorties? There's at least one or two Civil War veterans outside in the Cemetery also. Would these points, taken together, be "significant" for preservation purposes? And, how could I discuss the issues about persecution during Rev War in Frederick Co MD that prompted many to move west? How can I make that a positive for this religious sect? Any ideas of what I can include on the subject of "significance" would be great. This is the first time I've tried to write this kind of Application. Judy
