Hope Perry Breedlove, p.15 of his book, conjectured that Charles and Spencer were sons of James and Lucrecy Breedlove. In his note also on p.15 Hope recognizes the possibility that James and Robert, brothers of Nathan, sons of Charles (and Mary Parr) Breedlove, moved to Lunenburg/Charlotte counties, VA. At this juncture I think a new ordering of available circumstancial evidence supports an argument for the brothers Charles and Spencer, who had RWS from Caswell Co, NC being the sons of James and Mary Breedlove, versus James and Lucrecy Breedlove. some considerations in support of James and Mary Breedlove are: a. Lunenburg records also suggest James and Robert are brothers. b. Charlotte records along with John and Benjamin Breedlove's marriage to Watkins sisters suggest they are brothers. c. Wills and land records account for some Breedlove family members of John, Benjamin, and Robert but do not include the names of Charles and Spencer. d. James and Mary Breedlove have three daughters (Elizabeth, Kindness, and Sina), but no sons are mentioned. e. Charles and Spencer with RWS from Caswell Co, NC may have been young adults by 1776 (Charles married Sally Fletcher in 1774.) and this would account for their omission from the records of Lunenburg Co, VA prior to this time. f. James had land transactions in Halifax Co, VA 1767-1779 as did Charles 1782-1785. Charles had land transactions in Caswell Co, NC 1777-1785, just across the VA line from Halifax Co, VA. g. Tax records suggest James dies about 1791. Land records in 1797 refer to his heirs, James Breedlove, deceased. h. Spencer is apparently dead by 1785. Charles begins moving to Rutherford Co, NC by 1785 and remains there until 1804. i. Another interesting fact is that there are at least three Spencer surname adult males in Charlotte Co. records which may be the predecessors for the namesake, Spencer Breedlove. A chronology of sources and references relating date/county/event was prepared for James and Mary Breedlove, and for Charles Breedlove and Sally Fletcher. I am willing to share these chronologies for your scrutiny/improvement on the List or by personal e-mail. Bill Breedlove
