    1. [BREEDLOVE-L] James and Lucretia Breedlove Family Scenario
    2. Bill & Jan Breedlove
    3. The following is a postulated family scenario for James and Lucretia Breedlove from my available source material. In addition to some of our most available resource materials, as much attention as possible was given to the influence of neighboring families in the Lunenburg/Charlotte Co, VA. YOUR CONSIDERATE REVIEW AND COMMENTS WILL BE APPRECIATED. The wife of James has long been identified as Lucretia. Someone over time has suggested that her last name was Watkins. The will of William Watkins, Apr 02, 1781, (Charlotte Co Will Bk 1, 1765-1791, p.44-45) not only lists the names of his children but includes a witness of a Lucy Watkins. Lucy or Lucretia may be a sister of William. Or, Lucy may be a variation of the name Lucretia. James, Sr is thought to have died in 1764. From Lunenburg Co, VA James, Jr and Robert show up about 1749 with frequent entries 1752-1762. Robert's will in Charlotte Co, VA Will Bk 2, 1791-1805 is dated Dec 22, 1791 and he was deceased in Feb 1792. James, Jr is listed as deceased in a Lunenburg Co, VA Deed Bk 17, p.17 in an entry dated Jul 12, 1797. James, Jr's wife Mary is mentioned in a land sale to Francis Smithson on Jan 02, 1752 in Lunenburg Co, VA deed records. There are numerous references to James, Jr and Mary through 1757. The latest reference to James, Jr and Mary Breedlove is in Lunenburg Co, VA Deed Bk 3, p.41 on Sep 01, 1773. No mention of Mary was found between 1773 and 1797 when James, Jr is mentioned as deceased. No mention of a second marriage by James, Jr is found. There is no mention of a Kindness married to this James, Jr. James Breedlove, Jr is a resident and landowner according to Lunenburg deed records from at least 1752 to at least 1795 (43 years) with Smiths, Crenshaws adjacent landowners for at least 30 years, with Johnson, Smithson, Sammons, Stembridge, Wilkerson for lesser times. James and Mary Breedlove have daughters Sina, Kindness, and Elizabeth, who are mentioned in various deed and court records. While two of these daughters are married by 1773-4, these girls could have been born between 1750 and 1770, which would account for Kindness' birthdate of about 1767 and marriage to William Stembridge, Jr in 1785. Sina was apparently married to a John Wilkerson by 1773. James Breedlove sold land to Sine Breedlove of Charlotte Co, Va on Apr 11, 1787, implying John was deceased. On Oct 9, 1788 Siney Breedlove is witness to a land sale of Wm Stembridge, with John Wilkerson mentioned as deceased. Sina Breedlove married Stephen Shelton on Jun 06, 1792. Elizabeth is apparently married to William Sammons as early as 1774. A deed record of Feb 8, 1779 mentions them. They are mentioned as husband/wife on Jul 12, 1797 in Lunenburg Co, VA Deed Bk 17, p.67. Robert during this same time period apparently has no wife. He owns a little land. He and brother James both are frequently named in Lunenburg court records 1752-1762. Robert is a very frequent jurer. Robert's will of Dec 22, 1791 (probate Feb 09, 1792) names no children but bequeaths to niece Sina (daughter of brother James), to sister (or step sister) Isabel Johnson Breedlove, and to a Sally Almond. John Breedlove married Elizabeth Watkins and his family is accounted for in his will dated May 16, 1799, probated Dec 02, 1799, in Charlotte Co, VA Will Bk 2 1791-1805, p.30 Benjamin Breedlove is married to a Mary Watkins and has a son John Watkins Breedlove. Isbel Johnson Breedlove and Kindness Shorter sign as witnesses with Robert Breedlove on Apr 6, 1760 to a will of John Smithson (Early Wills 1746-1765 Lunenburg Co, VA), suggesting that they may be sisters of Robert Breedlove and daughters of James, Sr and Lucretia Breedlove. Charles and Spencer Breedlove are also suggested as children of James, Sr and Lucretia Breedlove by Hope Perry Breedlove, Breedlove Genealogical History, p.15. There are at least two Spencer families in the Lunenburg/Charlotte Co, VA area for whom Spencer may be a namesake. I do not know if the Spencer families might have any origin in Essex Co. Charles and Spencer evidently moved into neighboring Caswell Co, NC prior to the Revolutionary War. Charles Breedlove married Sally Fletcher in 1774 and had several Fletcher family neighbors in Caswell Co, NC. YOUR CRITIQUE PLEASE. I also hope you can add some source information. Bill Breedlove
