This was a bounce into my error bin -- it was meant for the list, so I'm forwarding it! I wonder if it explains my mother's coloring. My mother, who was a Breedlove, had dark, almost black straight hair, and a dark complexion. (I once had a classmate in grade school ask me if she was Mexican.) No one else in the family had this complexion except for a trace of it in one of my cousins. My mother looked as though she always had a beautiful tan, and I don't think she ever sunburned. By the way, when she died in 1995 at the age of 74, she had so little gray hair you could have counted the strands easily. Her sisters used to accuse her of coloring her hair, like they did, but I don't think she ever colored it in her lifetime. Her coloring had always been attributed to Cherokee decent, though I have yet to find a link to them in the family.
