    3. I thought those of you with ancestry in KY might be interested in this. Though the article is about Barren County, it mentions a few more, including Warren County. Carole --[ FORWARDED PRIVATE MESSAGE ]-------- To: JDPQ40A From: Linne Gravestock <linne@quiknet.com> Subject: BOWLES: BARREN CO., KY CEMETERY SIGNS Date: 11/10/98 05:23 PM Sandi Gorin posted this today on her South-Central Kentucky list. It's the story about the cemetery signs that I wanted you all to read. Linne Several of you have written me about this as you've hopped on the list after I posted this several weeks ago. Here again are the details and then some new news at the bottom - this is the newspaper article I took in yesterday: AN EXCITING NEW PROJECT - BARREN COUNTY CEMETERIES TO BE MARKED. Have you ever been driving through our glorious countryside and seen in the distance, an old family cemetery? Have you ever wondered who is buried there? Has it stirred a sadness in your heart when you see your family cemetery unmarked, overgrown and unreachable? The South Central Kentucky Historical and Genealogical Society is trying to take the first step towards saving the memories of these little cemeteries nestled among briars, timber and on the hillsides. We have begun a Cemetery Marking Program that we hope will motivate our citizens, friends, businesses and those with roots in Barren County to designate these cemeteries. There are 612 cemeteries named in our publication, Barren County Cemeteries. Some of these have disappeared between the time they were originally copied by the late Eva Coe Peden and the re-publication of this book in 1992. Some of the larger cemeteries are already marked. The remaining cemeteries are just reminders that once some family lived there and wept over the death of their family members. We are inaugurating a program where volunteers from the Historical Society will begin immediately marking as many cemeteries as possible. Sign World of Glasgow has agreed to make signs for us which will be 12 x 18, heavy aluminum (the same strength as our street signs). They will be brown, with white reflective lettering that will last for a very long time. Shown at the top of the sign will be the name of the cemetery; in the center will be the name of the individual, family or business who is placing the sign and date; and at the bottom the South Central Kentucky Historical Society name. The cost will be $25.00 which includes the sign, pole, placement and a photograph, if desired. One copy of the photograph will be returned to the sponsor and the other copy will be placed in a photo album that will be kept at the South Central Kentucky Cultural Center (formerly known as the Museum of the Barrens). If you or someone in your family can place the sign, the cost will be only $20.00. If you have family buried in a little unmarked cemetery, won't you consider adopting that cemetery? If you don't have a family cemetery in Barren County, would you consider adopting a cemetery? Businesses and organizations are encouraged to adopt a cemetery or cemeteries also. What a wonderful way for you to show that you care for the community. We know that we will not be able to mark all the cemeteries, but we are attempting to place signs at as many as we can. Those working on this project are: Martha and Daine Harrison, Scott and Ann Fife, Paul and Frances Bastien and myself. Any volunteers are welcome!! It has been asked if we will mark cemeteries in adjacent counties. Yes, however, it will be the responsibility of the individual ordering the sign for placement. We will not have the time needed to locate cemeteries outside of Barren County. So if you have a family cemetery in Monroe, Metcalfe, Hart, Edmonson, Allen or Warren County, we will have the sign made, but you will need to pick up the completed sign and arrange for its placement. Information needed includes: Your name, address and phone number Name of the family cemetery How you would like to be named on the sign. (Such as: Placed by the Smith Family) If you would like a photograph taken, please include a large SASE. You may send the adoption requests to: Sandi Gorin, 205 Clements Avenue., Glasgow, KY 42141-3409. Include a check for either $25 (we place sign) or $20 (you place sign) made payable to the South Central Kentucky Historical and Genealogical Society. As soon as we receive the order, we will make arrangements for the sign to be made and will place it as soon as weather and time permits. We will check the cemetery list to be sure the cemetery has not been previously adopted and verify directions on locating the cemetery. If we have any questions we will contact you, and we will notify those living in Barren County when the sign has been placed by telephone. We are hoping that this will be the first step in preserving these little cemeteries that have been so long neglected. Barren County is now 200 years old and what a wonderful way to remember our past! If you have any questions, you may contact me, Sandi Gorin, at 651-9114 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. UPDATE: I just took in orders for the first 6 signs. They will be ordering the aluminum today and it will take about 3 days (they hadn't ordered until it was certain we'd have orders!). I would imagine it will take 1-2 weeks for the signs to be made. I will pick them up - pay for them and notify those of you ordering from the list that I have them. We'll be placing them as soon as weather and time permits - some will need the poles - some we will put on the fence if the cemetery is fenced; some will be along the roadway if the cemetery is not reachable anymore. (Thus my Fiscal Court appearance on the 17th!). Thanks for all the interest! This is not making me any money - I am the one who thought of the project only! If you have any questions - yell. We just laid out the design - the cemetery name will be 3 inches tall - helvitica print. The donor's name and other info will be approximately 1 3/4inches tall.
