His grandfather (Martin's great grandson) is almost 97 & still sharp as a tack, and has been compiling a book of "Knowledge of Nonsense" for decades. Here is what I jotted down from talking to him a few years back: "Martin Breedlove murdered (throat slit) in Columbia, Missouri on night of March 2, 1845. Bill of murder brought against Jacob Wilson on May 3, 1845. Found not guilty." I seem to recall he was murdered in his front yard, and alcohol was perhaps involved in the incident.
