That same year saw the passing of his grandfather, William Breedlove. The Breedlove family came from North Carolina trying different places along the way, as they had a child born in Alabama, two in Tennessee, and arrived in Missouri prior to 1840. They settled in the area south of Marshfield on the headwaters of james River. Charles moved his family to Douglas County in the 1850s where he succumbed to pneumonia in 1854-55. Amelia later married Raleigh McDonald. During the Civil War they took the family to Lebanon where, at the age of twelve, James Y. became a hostler in the Union Army. In 1870 the family lived on the eastern edge of Wright County in Montgomery Township. Amelia passed away in 1872 and the family sort of scattered to different households. James cleared a field for Hiram "Bud" Rose as payment for the farm on Beaver Creek where he raised his family. Shortly after the turn of the century they moved to Manes, where they built and operated Breedlove Hotel, a stopping place for drummers and home to those who would stay.
