    3. Hi Georgia, I was interested in your Scott family which was posted in the Breedlove page. I have Nancy Scott (b. 1769) md. John Thornton ca. 1794; they had 10 children. Does this tie in with your Scott family in any way? I notice some of the children had Thornton in their names, and thought we might connect. We "think" Nancy's father was Walter Scott (b. ca. 1745 Eng.) and lived and traded with the Cherokee's. Can you help? Thanks, Dorothy dottur@ptsi.net

    3. Hi, Help. Too much data. Looking in the BLM Land Patent Reports for Missouri, I found a whole lot of Breedloves. Signature Date: Given Name: 26 Aug 1905 Allen 9 Feb 1901 Anderson S. 6 Apr 1898 Andrew J. 1 Nov 1859 Clay 22 Jan 1895 Clayton H. 1 Jun 1859 Columbus 10 Mar 1856 " 30 Oct 1857 " 15 May 1857 " 1 Apr 1856 Edward N. 1 Apr 1856 " 1 Sep 1856 " 3 Jan 1856 Elizabeth 1 Jul 1852 James 15 Apr 1853 " 1 Jul 1874 " 25 Apr 1898 " 9 Apr 1892 " 15 Dec 1890 John M. 30 Jan 1890 John W. 13 Feb 1899 John W. 1 Sep 1858 John 1 Sep 1858 " 1 Sep 1858 " 1 Jun 1859 " 3 Apr 1848 " 9 Apr 1892 Mark C. 10 Jan 1840 Martin 1 Jan 1849 Simpson 1 Jul 1861 Spencer 30 Jun 1879 " 17 Dec 1901 Thomas d. 5 Apr 1883 Warren J. 30 Oct 1857 William A. 15 Dec 1857 William M. 10 Oct 1856 " " 15 Apr 1853 William 10 Mar 1856 " 1 Jun 1859 " 1 Jun 1859 " I found Warren J[ackson] Breedlove in Range 17-W, Township 34-N, Sect. 1. He was in the same Township and Range as all the Lowry, Mullican(e), Mizer, and Bowles relatives. They were in Sections 1, 2, and 3. I plotted them out and found out that they were all neighbors (we knew that by the census records, but looking at the plot brought it all home). I also got the neighbors' names, for future reference. I have the Doc. Nr., Acc. No., Aliquot Parts, Sect., Township, and Range for all of the Breedloves. The question is, what do I do with all of this information, and who do I give it to when I don't know for sure who some of these people are. Some of them are easy. But, for instance, how do we figure out who that Elizabeth Breedlove is? She is, probably, the wife of one of the Breedloves, not the child. Could she be Elizabeth, who died in Kentucky? Martin's property, confusingly enough, was not in Laclede county where one would expect to find it, by the way. This has been tedious because the BLM records don't like me sitting in them for hours at a time. (My computer is slow.) So, every once in a while, everything freezes or the error screen starts coming up. But, I have been sick with a bad virus since I returned from my trip, so I haven't felt like doing much but sitting, and this just takes sitting. :-) As with any research, deciphering it and putting it where it belongs is going to take 10 times the time it took to get it. Any thoughts on all of this? Carole

    3. The suggestion that the Spanish and Portugese immigrated through SC is interesting and suggests that we might all benefit from a history lesson. I am tracing Chisholms through Charleston, SC 1750-1803 during which time this is primarily a British port. I am aware that this is a very significant British Colony and port in the 1700's having British governors, and was the southernmost British strength at the time of the Revolutionary War. Specifically, the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780 was a turning point that required the British to reinforce this southern exposure. I too would appreciate knowing how much non-British immigration through Charleston, SC was the norm. Or, was this non-English immigration typically through other and more southern ports? There's no way she could be the dau of James Greening and Sarah Crosswait who married 17 Nov 1786. She is more than likely dau of James Greening's father Robert Greening and his wife Betsy, though it is possible that James born 22 Mar 1752 was married earlier to someone else and had Nancy. Tom

    2. Thank you so much for your quick reply. >I think you were meaning that you were not sure of the parents of Jasper, not his son Jurdon. Yes, you're right. I did mean to say that there was question regarding Jasper's parents. I have information that the first census report found for Jasper (1860 census, Morgan Co., AL) shows him at about 2 years old and he is listed as "Jasper P. Snider". Do you have any information to support this? If so, was there any record of an adoption by Elisha? There is an old handwritten note in the family that is supposed to be written by "Jerd" Breedlove as dictated to him by his father, Jasper, since Jasper could not read or write. In this note, Jasper stated that he did not know who his parents were, only that his father was called "Jake". This leads me to suspect that his father might have been the Jacob Breedlove recorded at the same time as Elisha (on the 1860 census). I have not been able to locate further information on the Jacob/Barbra Breedlove family after 1860 census. I have not had a chance to follow up on the Portugese theory, but your suggestion regarding Suzanne Lary as being the source of this tale is plausable. I have just discovered today that there is a FHC within a few minutes drive of me. Once I am able to contact someone at the center, I plan to do further research and will let you know if I find anything. I'm not so sure about the "out of wedlock" part, Mr. King's explanation of dates makes sense, but my grandfather, Charles Ernest Breedlove, had always said that our early ancestors were of the Mormon faith and that they only "converted" in the late 1800's and early 1900's, usually taking the faith of the spouse. That later conversion to the spouses religion is a strong part of the Mormon religion. I am not one, but have studied a lot of their ways as I use their Family History Centers for research. The earliest Mormons were persecuted and driven clear across the country to Utah so many of the early records of their marriages were destroyed and many of their followers lynched and murdered. After they reached Utah, they began practising polygamy to increase the size of their following. This may explain why Elisha seems to have different and younger wives. > > Also, so as not to confuse him with the LA Jordon Breedlove, my > greatgrandfather's name was spelled JURDON. The 1900 Census for Dade Co., GA lists Jurdon as a son of Jasper. Both Elisha and Jasper are on the 1880 census in Jackson Co., AL, ED 107, pg 9 and 10. Jurdon's brother Lacel is evidently named for Lecile B. Breedlove whose son Jordon lived in Lousiana. I think you were meaning that you were not sure of the parents of Jasper, not his son Jurdon. > My grandfather also said that our line of Breedloves had originally come from Portugal (which will probably really put a snag in some of the > theories I have read regarding the SC Breedloves). To me, it makes sense, considering that the Spanish and Portugese were making their presence known in the area around SC at about the same time the English were making their settlements further north. Suzanne Lary, who married Nathaniel Breedlove on 17 Sep 1768 in Charleston, SC was supposedly Portugese, which may tend to support your family legend. Didn't the early Portugese intermingle and later were known as Mulungeons? We have never found an origin for the name of Breedlove, and though we tend towards Wales and England, Portugal is not out of the question. Tom King

    3. Have recently discovered that the wife of Broaddus Breedlove was a Nancy GREENING. She had married 1st to Bolser Duval on 12 Mar 1798 in Albemarle Co., VA. They had a daughter Elizabeth Duval who married 6 Aug 1822 Orange Co., VA to Layton Harvey. Bolser died and Nancy married Broaddus Breedlove 12 Jan 1809 Orange Co., VA. When Broaddus & Nancy's son Martin married Lucinda Harvey in 1832, Layton Harvey was her bondsman. Nancy Greening is most likely the daughter of James Greening and Sarah Crosswaite who married 17 Nov 1786 in VA. They died in Boone County, Missouri in 1836 and 1852, so they were there the same time as Broaddus, Nancy, Martin and Lucinda. Am still digging to find the parents of Lucinda and Layton Harvey. Tom

Hello Cousins, I don't normally reply to the list, but in this case, I feel I should make an exception considering that the "Mormon Breedloves" referred to are my line and the Charles Breedlove that related the information regarding the early religious beliefs of my line is my father. There is still some questions as to who was actually Jerd's father, but we're working on it. My grandfather also said that our line of Breedloves had originally come from Portugal (which will probably really put a snag in some of the theories I have read regarding the SC Breedloves). To me, it makes sense, considering that the Spanish and Portugese were making their presence known in the area around SC at about the same time the English were making their settlements further north. I have not had time to do the research to prove the "family tale", but would love to hear from anyone who may have leads to prove any part of the story is true. We all know that there is some truth in every tale, you just have to know where to look and who to ask. Not at all. Even if you have definite proof of a marriage date that falls after the date of birth of a child that only means the parents solemnized their vows officially later. It could be that they were travelling and were married by some itinerant minister who never recorded the marriages anywhere, or it could be an informal marriage where there were no preachers available and they decided to be married in the eyes of themselves and their travelling companions or neighbors. We had a full page story in todays newspaper about a woman whose 1st husband went off to fight in the Texas revolution and never came back so she took up with another soldier, bore him children and lived as his wife for seven years before he died. There was a long court battle over his property as they were never officially married. This became the basis for the Common Law Marriage statutes here in Texas. This is this first time I have heard of Breedlove's that were Mormon. I would rather doubt it as Louisiana never had any Mormon settlements or gatherings there. Perhaps these Breedlove's moved out West and became Mormon out there. Tom --WebTV-Mail-1288389547-2152--
