    3. This note is for Prodigy subscribers: Prodigy is apparently tinkering with their mail servers to better handle the holiday season traffic. They are holding some mail (beginning sometime Thursday the 10th) and are continuing to hold it, apparently, even though some mail sent today (the 11th) is getting through. The upshot is that some mailing list messages may be received by Prodigy subscribers out of order. Hopefully Prodigy will take the opportunity to clear their queues overnight and all held-up mail will be delivered. Tom [list facilitator]

I wonder if it explains my mother's coloring. My mother, who was a Breedlove, had dark, almost black straight hair, and a dark complexion. (I once had a classmate in grade school ask me if she was Mexican.) No one else in the family had this complexion except for a trace of it in one of my cousins. My mother looked as though she always had a beautiful tan, and I don't think she ever sunburned. By the way, when she died in 1995 at the age of 74, she had so little gray hair you could have counted the strands easily. Her sisters used to accuse her of coloring her hair, like they did, but I don't think she ever colored it in her lifetime. Her coloring had always been attributed to Cherokee decent, though I have yet to find a link to them in the family.

    2. My mother and her siblings also had dark coloring and high cheekbones. My mothers eyes were grey, but she had black hair and dark skin. This was attributed by some to be Indian heritage. My mother always denied it, but her brothers did not. In school they were called half-breeds and picked upon. Perhaps this is why my mother only claimed to be Scotch and Irish. She claimed the coloring came from the Irish side. I have not been able to find it on the Breedlove side as yet, although my Breedlove ggrandfather David Anderson's first wife, Mary Ann, was supposed to have been Cherokee. An elderly cousin told me that David Anderson Breedlove (according to her mother) was supposed to have been at least 1/4 Cherokee. Linda

    1. Re: [BREEDLOVE-L] Melungeons
    2. I have been reading up on the Melungeons since it was first mentioned as a possible explanation for my grandfather's claim that his early Breedlove ancestors were in South Carolina, but were originally from Portugal. He also said that one or more of his ancestors had married Cherokees. According to what I have read so far, some census takers would record Melungeons with a line or check mark in the "color" column of their census records since there was no "official" letter to represent them and they were not necessarily considered white because of their olive complexion. I wonder how many of our Breedloves have this notation on the census records? Does anyone know? I know that some records show "FC" or "Free Man of Color", and this, too, was sometimes a reference to the Melungeons, according to the articles. Much of my Breedlove family is from the surrounding area of Chattanooga, Tennessee. I found reference on the internet at http://www.hypertext.com/blackirish/melungeons.html, to the "Celebrated Melungeon Case" in Chattanooga in 1872, where a woman's inheritance was challenged by cousins on the grounds that her mother was Melungeon and Melungeons are part black and since black-white marriage was illegal, she was illegitimate. Lewis Shepherd, her lawyer, convinced the court that Melungeons are the descendants of Carthaginians, not Black Africans and her cousins lost. Another interesting article on the Melungeons can be found on the internet at http://members.aol.com/bbbenge/page15.html, if anyone is interested. Again on 2 Jan 1813, he purchased 70 1/4 ac To secure a debt he gave a lien (Mortgage) on 265 ac of land and 2 slaves 10 Feb 1808. On the 24 Sept 1834 to secure a mimor debt of his son in law Jonathan Gillaspie, specifically so stated, he gave a lien on a 50 ac tract of land and a grey mare 5 yrs old. No will was found but in minute book, 1848-1850, we find on pg 371, 1 July 1850, that on the motion of Jarrell Beck, he is apptd admr of the estate of Cornelius Breedlove, decd, and gave bond in the sum of $100. with William Beck his security. As Cornelius was about 85 yrs of age when he died he very probably had given all his property to his children prior to this and had no occasion to write a will. 1850 census Mortality schedules, ree 184, pg 26 Cornelius Breedlove, age 80, male, white, married, b VA, d May 1850-ill 3 days Jane Breedlove, age 75, female, white, married, b Va, d Dec 1849 of a cold. ill 8 days. Comment: Genealogical accounts state the marriage bond of John W. Trower to Jane Breedlove gives her parent as Cornelius Breedlove. Altho we have the above marriage register at the VA State library we do not have a list of marriage bonds after 1806. These bonds are still in the custody of the clerk of court of Albemarle Co at Charlottesville, VA and it is suggested to client that she write said clerk for certified copy of the specific bond and to give him the info indicated above and her reason for wishing same. If this record does not have the proof she desires client should attempt to secure a copy of the Death certificate of jane Breedlove Trower who d 1874 Shelbyville, Illinois or a cemetery (burial) record or a newspaper obituary. any and/or all of these should give the names of her parents and other important info. That is the end of that research material. Ellen, dande@mail.tds.net

    3. Albemarle Co Va. Records-Personal property tax lists, original records in VA State Library For the period 1782-1789, each year Thomas Breedlove is the only adult of his surname to be listed as a resident of Albemarle Co. He generaly reports himself and 2 or 3 white tithes between age 16 and 21; no slaves; 10 to 14 horses. We have noted that in the State Enumerations of 1785 that he is the head of a family of 12 whites which probably consisted that year of himself and wife and ten ch (boys and girls) In the year 1790 Cornelius Breedlove apears on the list as tithable and as an adult for the first time. Thomas Breedlove is the only other one of his name so listed this year. In the year 1791 a Maddeson Breedlove appears as an adult and in 1792 appears a Martin Breedlove. We pursued the records of Cornelius Breedlove, from this source thru the year 1800, in which year he lists himself as taxable and with one taxable slave. >From these records it is logical to believe that Cornelius, madison and Martin Breedlove must have been sons of Thomas Breedlove. If no other type evidence is found or available to prove the premise and if no other evidence is found of a contra nature to oppose, it is acceptable as proof. (Reference is made to dAR Is that lineage right, publ. 1958) albemarle Co Va records, land tax records, originals Va state litrary. These records commence in VA in the year 1782. the commissioner appointed failed to list Thomas Breedlove as taxable on his land in this first year. However, in 1783, under the title list of errors in land tax- names of landowners- the commissioner shows that Thomas Breedlove was charged a tax of L1 12 shillings and 9 1/2 pence which he corrects as should be- L1 12 shillings and 7 1/2 pence. he does not give the acreage but in 1787, district B, he is still charged L 1 12 shillings 7 1/2 pence on 450 ac or land. thomas Breedlove is still taxed on 450 ac of land as late as 1798 which is as far as was researched in this assignment and is the only landowner of his name in the county thru the year 1795. In 1798 Madison Breedlove is taxed on 376 1/2 acres. A search was made for the record of his purchase of this land as it is important to learn the year he came into the country and possibly his origin. His name is not indexed as a grantee or purchaser in the deed books of the county nor is he to be found as receiving a land patent or land grant. It is therefore felt that the clerk must have missed his name in indexing his records and that a page by page search in the years before 1781 should be successful but this would have required a great deal of time. Neither could we find a record of the disposal of his land but this could possibly be determined by a search of the land tax records from 1799 thru 1810. if the sale, gift or disposal of his land could be found it may recite the history of how and when he acquired it. No will or inventory of his estate was found but he may have died in another -?

    2. Ellen Byrne
    3. Several years ago one of my correspondents hired a VA researcher, this is the info that was forwarded to me by: Mrs. Stanley H. Young, Box 7, Shelbyville, Illinois, 62565, descends from one Dr. John Wesley Trower, Jr 1810-1855 and Jane Breedlove, his wife, 1805-1874, married 7 Sept 1830, Albemarle co VA Jane Breedlove dau of Cornelius Breedlove b ca 1765-1770 d May 1850 and Jane Beck, his wife b 1774, d Aug 1849 who was the son of Thomas Breedlove, sometimes spelled Breadlove of Albemarle Co Va. Client has relied on correspondence and published accounts of the Breedlove family by other genealogist but which accounts fail to cite source, etc.. It is believed those accounts have mixed and combined the records of at least Two thomas Breedloves and possibly three. (to wit): 1-thomas Breedlove, with wife Sarah purchased 369 acres of land in Spotsylvania Co Va May 2, 1758 from Gawin and Hannah Corbin of Westmoreland Co at which time he is specified as being resident of Spotsylvania Co. this Thomas Breedlove and wife Sarah sold the 369 ac on Sept 1, 1760 to James Pritchett and he was then a resident of Orange co. We can estimate he was at least 21 yrs of age in 1758, thus born by 1736-7 and probably earlier. It is possible also he is the same Thomas Breedlove who was later in Albemarle Co but this has not been proven within this present assignment. (See Spotsylvania Co records by Crozer, pg 217 1-thomas Breedlove, Revolutionary Wr soldier who is listed on various payrolls from 28 Feb 1776 to March 1777 in Capt Francis taylor's Co of the 2nd Va Regt It is believed by this writer (researcher) that he is the same Thomas Breedlove found in culpeper co Va with a public service claim there in 1782 was in the militia of that county in Jan of 1781 as denoted by the recors of Culpeper Classes in Va State Library, but whose records were pursued no further in this assignment. We may state our unproven opinion that we believe him to have been a younger man than one born in the 1730s. 30/Thomas Breedlove of Albemarle Co Va owned 450 ac of land in that county before 1782 had a public service claim for furnishing supplies to the continental Army in 1782 was the head of a family of 12 whites in 1785 in Albeamrle co as listed in the heads of households, state enumerations of VA 1782--. His origin before coming into Albemarmle Co has not been proven by this researcher but he evidently was also born in the 1730s and it is possible he may have been the Thomas Breedlove enumerated as number 1 above. More evidene as to this must be secured. IT IS QUITE EVIDENT THAT THIS IS THE THOMAS BREEDLOVE WITH WHOM WE ARE CONCERNED AS BEING THE ANCESTOR OF CLIENT. Albemarle Co Va records Public service claims, 1782-court booklet, pg 4 At a court held for Albemarle Co 12 Sept 1783 Thomas Breadlove on a certificate for 222 bushels of meal, L1 7 shillings (?) pence.. Commissioners book II, pg 345 Sept 6, 1783, paid to Thomas Breedlove for meal furnished the prisoners of war-11 shillings 1 pence... These are original records in the Archives of the Va State Library and are available nowhere else. these records prove eligibility for membership in the dAr and SAR for all proven descendants. It should be noted that a thomas Breedlove has a similar public service claim in Culpeper co Ct booklet II, pg 12 in this same period proving that there were Two - at least-of this name. Few more pages to this--later. As I recall Mrs. Young's purpose was to qualify her sister who wanted to join the DAR. Ellen, dande@mail.tds.net

I hope someone can shed some light on them. If Nathan's wife Susanna Lary was of Portugese desent. Thomas,Nathan,Reuben,Jordan, Winney could all hook in. We know Reuben went to TN , Hamilton co. 1850 Reuben 82 SC , Priscilla 80 SC. They must have moved with a Dau. as there are no other Breedlove's there. One possibly is Juliann b abt 1815 SC ma to Thomas Craft 45 SC. They are next door to Reuben. We know Jorden went to AL 1845 then on to LA 1860/61. This lleaves Thomas and Nathan. What happened to families??? Back to Portugese. Sincy SC man of color. Also 1850 page 54 Richland 10 years old listed as Mulatto is Nathan.. This in fascinating with these posts about peolpe being Indians and dark peolpe. Could be some of the lost Breedlove's are from Nathan and Susan Lary. If we all work together we might figure this all out. I just hope you all can make sense out of this. Don

    1. Re: [BREEDLOVE-L] Spanish and Portugese
    2. Bill and Jan Breedlove and all Breedloves: I read Bill's letter and thought the following may be of interest. This is information from an article written by Scott Collins in THE TENNESSEE MAGAZINE: One of the groups of people who were on the receiving end of cruelty in the South, along with the American Indians, the Irish, and the Blacks, were a group called the Melungeons. Discriminated by the white society, they came through South Carolina and retreated farther into Appalachia and with each wave of white settlers moved westward. They kept to themselves so much that they are not even in the history books. Only recently have Melungeon descendants begun to uncover bits and pieces of their past. They were dark- skinned, dark-haired people. One theory is that they are of Portuguese descent. Documents show that the dark-skinned people of Appalachia called themselves "Portyghee". John Sevier encountered such people in the mountains of East Tennessee in 1782. Closely related to the Portuguese view is that of a Spanish origin. Spain and Portugal, collectively known as the Iberian Peninsula, were conquered by Moors and Berbers from Morocco in the 8th century. During the Spanish Inquisition in the late 15th century, descendants of these invaders, who had by then intermarried and considered themselves Spanish or Portuguese, became the persecuted and were taken to North America to settle Spanish colonies. One colony was Santa Elena on the southern tip of what is now Parris Island, South Carolina. This place was a military outpost operated from 1566 to 1587 when it was abandoned following the burning of its sister outpost at St. Augustine, Florida by the British. During Santa Elena's early years, Capt. Juan Pardo dispatched men into the country's interior and established a series of five small forts, some believed to be near Knoxville, TN. Pardo's troops included Portuguese and Spaniards. The Turkish influence is backed by word similarities of Melungeon people developing Mediterranean diseases. Since most theories mention intermarriage with the Indians of the region, these word similarities are seen best in some of the Indian languages. One example is the Cherokees' word for themselves- ani-yun-wiya-which means "the principle people". The Turkish word "ana-youn" means "the primary people". Other words show a link to Turkey, such as "Appalachian" which is similar to the Turkish "Apa-la-che" which means "widespread" or "multitude". There is a book written by Brent Kennedy -THE MELUNGEONS, THE RESURRECTION OF A PROUD PEOPLE-THE UNTOLD STORY OF ETHNIC CLEANSING IN AMERICA. Kennedy began his research when he contracted sarcoidosis, a disease that causes painful breathing, blurred vision, aching joints and muscles, exhaustion and skin rashes. He discovered the disease is most prevalent in blacks, Portuguese immigrants and people of Mediterrean descent. This led him to ask questions about his heritage. He traveled to Turkey and found similarities in dress and food. He noted that the Creek fez and the Cherokee turban could be evidence of the Turkish influence. Kennedy says that the Turks and Central Asians exhibit some physical characteristics not commonly found in Europeans but found in Melungeons. These include cranial bumps on the back of the head and an inability to digest cow's milk. His book has spawned research both academically and medically. Blood testing has given some validity to the Mediterrrean ties theory- Similarities between Melugeons and people from Spain, Portugal, the Canary Islands, North Africa, Malta, Turkey, Cyprus, Cuba and some Indian Tribes of South America. Melungeons may have a true melting pot heritage. The word Melungeon alludes to the inter-mingling of people. The French "melange" means mixture; Greek "melas" means dark; or brown. Their mysterious heritage led to the discrimination by the flood of white settlers rushing over the mountains. Some Melungeons claimed to be Cherokee while others said they were Black Dutch. No matter what they claimed they were lumped together as people of color. As a result they stayed to themselves and adopted Scotch-Irish surnames such as Collins and Kennedy in an attempt to avoid further discrimination. Their children were kept covered, even in the summer, to prevent darkening more. Some tried to scrub the darkness from their skin. Kennedy says that his mother was accused by a college professor of not washing properly and was sent to the shower, humiliated in front of other students. The Melungeons were eventually pushed into southwestern Virginia and northeast Tennessee. Counties of Hancock, Hamblin, Grainger, Claiborne and Hawkins TN, Lee, Scott, and Wise VA are rich in Melungeon history. Clinch Valley was the site of the second Melungeon gathering on July 9-12, 1998. Clinch Valley is located in Wise, Virginia. The first event drew 500-600 people. Collins, a Melungeon researcher, says that in the writings of Dr. Thomas Walker, who traveled through the area in the mid 1700s wrote of people who spoke broken English and claimed to be "Portyghee". It was noted that they were not American Indians because they wore clothes and had long beards. Collins is also establishing a museum dedicated to the Melungeons. A question that arises is -If some of us have been told that our Breedlove ancestry, as well as others, included the American Indian, should we also look at the Melungeon ancestry instead? From South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky we find many Melungeons!!! Teresa

    2. I continue looking for clues to lead me to my kinfolk in the Breedlove line. I have a copy of my great great grandparents marriage certificate - William Breedlove who married Rebecca Goff in 1882, Pike County, Kentucky. He was supposed to have come to Kentucky from Russell Co., Virginia and told his children he was Cherokee. He was 18 when he married. His parents were Madison Breedlove and Elizabeth Dye from Virginia. Thanks, Teresa

    2. Ellen, I am not surprised that more of your family is from the area where the Breedloves probably lived. Most of the other branches of my father's family are also from the area the English call the Midlands. This is just one more corroborating fact for this being the original home of the Breedloves. Now I wonder if they were Quakers. The Watkins may have been Quakers. I have looked in my Society of Genealogists' booklet to see if there is a good source for me to check for the Bredloves who fought in the Revolution on the British side. It is not clear that there is a good source, but I will investigate. Martha

    2. Ellen, et. al, I have never heard of these records in the 1776 war for Bredlows, Bredloves and Breedloves. I will go to the Society of Genealogists before I leave England on Dec. 23rd to see if I can find any information on these people. My year is almost up and bits and pieces of information on our English background are popping out. Over the weekend my husband and I went to Lincolnshire. We drove through Scopwick where one of the Broadlove baptismal records were found. The days over here are very short at this time of year, so when we drove through it was nearly dark. But, the little farming town has many old buildings and walls. It seems the entire year we have been rushing everywhere we go. I would like to have gone in the church to look at the records, but it was late. I thought it was a lovely part of England. We will solve the mystery of our English roots before long. Martha
