Our library does have the before 1940 set. I was surprised by the number of those who died in the 40's that listed Social Security Numbers. Some of the Social Security numbers that were listed in the index and some dates of birth were incorrect when I compared them against the Social Security Death Index. I would bet that the SSDI has the more accurate birth date as a person had to provide some sort of proof of birth to get a social security number in the first place and a date of birth on a death certificate is really second hand from an informant that may not have access to the primary birth data, or may have relied on what that person told everyone while they were living to conceal their real age. I can identify a few people on this list from Indiana, Missouri, Georgia and Kentucky lines of Breedlove's, but very few of them, so if anyone can identify any of these, please let me know. Hope this helps. Tom PS, the file is wider than a normal page, so if you view it with Word or WordPad, tell it to print in Landscape mode. --------------8737CD4969136E82AF1A8518 Content-Type: text/plain; Hello everyone! Now that I realize this is the Breedlove List I can start asking questions.I'm looking for information in Nattie Breedlove b June 27, 1881.She is the daughter of James L and Mary Heslop. Also, trying to find information on Martin D. Breedlove who possibly served in the War of 1812 and was b around 1793.This Martin D. died in 1867 in Boutetourt Cty Va.Thanks for the help! Aaron Breedlove
Tom, Thanks for keeping one eye on whats going on even if you do not feel you have time to participate. My senario or strawman is an attempt to understand what everyone pretty much agrees on or what is in need of deeper study with regard to these early Breedlove families. I began some work in the LDS Family History Library in January. In May I hope to spend some time in NC and VA. If anyone wants to suggest some research locations or topics there, I would be very appreciative. When Tom said, "This whole discussion seems to be pushing back the dates of James's birth" I am not unaware of this difficulty. My question to everyone is, what are the reasonable possibilities here? Is Robert a brother of James (wife Lucretia)? Is he a brother of James (wife Mary)? Are there two Roberts? Is there another reasonable possibility? What do the facts suggest? Tom's additional information may also be helpful," To throw another wrinkle into the fray, Kindness Shorter was married 1st to John Shorter who died in 1758. Their son James Shorter married a Lucy Woodson or Childry. Their son Berry born c1779 married Sina Stembridge in Charlotte Co., VA on 2 Aug 1802. Sina was the dau of John & Mary Stembridge and this John was the brother of William Stembridge who married Kindness Breedlove. This Kindness Shorter was identified as "relict of John Shorter" in Katherin Elliot's Early Wills 1764-1765 Lunenburg Co, VA, p. 135. I presume we agree this Kindness was a Breedlove. But from which family? John Breedlove's will in Charlotte Co, VA on May 16, 1799 did not mention a Kindness. Robert's will of Dec 22, 1791 did not mention a Kindness? The Kindness b 1767 associated with Elizabeth and Sina was probably a daughter of James (wife Mary), marrried William Stembridge in 1785. So, it appears to me that Kindness Breedlove who married John Shorter is a different Kindness. Who then were her parents? Charles and Mary? James and Lucretia? Benjamin and Mary (Watkins) Breedlove? What do we know here? Bill

Dear Cousins Below is what I have on the estate settlement of James Breedlove of Essex Co. Marilyn Owen 4. James Breedlove m. Lucrecy [probably]. He died intestate in Essex Co. His final estate settlement was made on March 16, 1767. Nathan Breedlove was owed money out of the estate. Lucrecy Breedlove's estate was presented for Inventory & Appraisement in Essex Co. on Jan. 20, 1772 by Peter Trible, Nathan Breedlove & John Mann. Robert Mann was Administrator. Mary Trible, Nathan Breedlove & Constant Edmonson [sister of Mary Parr Breedlove] were among those owed money out of the estate.
Martha, thanks for taking the time to study the possibilities with me. I am the first to admit that the thread in this fabric is pretty thin. Let me see if I can respond to some of your comments: Martha said: "The Lucy Watkins could be William Watkins' granddaughter, Lucy, the daughter William and Mary Osborne Watkins. Lucy married Col. Thomas Spencer on 5 Apr 1781, just days after the will was written. " I agree. My observation regarding the Wm Watkins will of 1781 is that he mentions several relationships: sons, sons-in-law, grandsons in quite a bit of detail. The Lucy who married Col Thomas Spencer would not be mentioned in the will since her father William is. Certainly, she could sign as a witness, but an older Lucy such as a sister of William, Sr might be just as likely to be a witness. Martha said: "Robert Breedlove first appears on a Lunenburg County, VA Tithe List with James Breedlove in 1751. If a male is tithable when he is 16, this would mean that Robert was born in about 1735. It would also mean that Robert was 29 in 1764 when James died. I have never understood why he was not mentioned in any way when his father's estate was settled. Why was James' estate settled in Essex County when he lived in Lunenburg County? Is it really the same James? " I think it is real easy to mix up all of the James and Roberts that may be around. That Robert may have been born about 1735 and been about 29 when James, Sr died in 1764 makes sense. I think the records in Lunenburg Co strongly suggest that this Robert and James,Jr are brothers. James, Jr has a wife Mary in records until at least 1773, and this Jame,Jr dies before 1797. Robert and niece Sina are mentioned several times. Robert is mentioned almost exclusively as witness to land sales, and does not appear to own much land himself. He appears to be a professional juror as much as anything. He also gets into trouble, once appearing in court for shooting someone's mare. A wife was not mentioned. I am not sure that James,Sr and Lucretia ever lived in Lunenburg Co, VA, but their children may have. From Lucretia's estate in Essex Co, VA in 1772, she obviously has close relationships with Tribles and Constance (Parr) Edmondson in Essex Co. I am picking up on Hope Perry Breedlove's comment on p.15 of his book that the Breedloves in Lunenburg and Charlotte counties are probably closely connected. There is little other than Hope's logic that John/Benjamin have much association with Robert/James,Jr. And, that John/Benjamin/Robert/James,Jr are children of James,Sr and Lucretia is only a guess based on the proliferation of Kindness names in this family line. That Charles and Spencer were probably children of James,Sr and Lucretia was suggested by Hope on p.15 also. My information is that Charles Breedlove married Sally Fletcher in Essex Co, VA in 1774. With Fletchers and Parrs in Caswell Co, NC where we find Charles and Spencer before entering the Revolutionary War, there seems to be a suggestion that there was some migration from Essex Co, VA to Caswell Co, NC and that might include Lunenburg/Charlotte counties on the way. To me, these periferal relationships suggest Charles and Spencer had parentage in Essex Co, VA, but geography might also suggest brothers and sisters in Lunenburg/Charlotte counties. I am obviously looking for help here! By the way, other than Hope's reference, I do not have the benefit of the detail of James Breedlove, Sr's estate settlement in Essex Co, in 1764. Are other Breedlove's beside Nathan mentioned? Can you provide this detail? Martha said: "Another thought about Robert, in the 1790 Charlotte County VA Census, he is listed as having 3 white people and 6 black people living in his house. If he had no wife and that is a good assumption, who were the 3 white people? Sally Almond mentioned in Robert's will may be of the Alleman family and a distant cousin." Robert's lifestyle is hard to figure at all; especially as he mentions his sister Isabel Johnson Breedlove in his will of 1791 as well. Bill

I have never understood why he was not mentioned in any way when his father's estate was settled. I do not want to get into this mess. Though I have a lot of data on this line of James I have not studied it in depth to pass on any judgements. It strikes me that since Robert had to be 21 to be tithed, he would have to have been born before 1730. This places him back in the family of Charles and Mary Parr, actually a younger brother of James rather than a son. This whole discussion seems to be pushing back the dates of James's birth and therefore the whole family makeup of Charles and Mary Parr Breedlove's family and the accepted births for Charles and Mary of 1688 to 1690. If Robert is a son of James, then James must have been born about 1705-1710, barely in the scheme of things only if Mary had children in her teens. >Why was James' estate settled in Essex County when he lived in Lunenburg County? Is it really the same James? I think there are really four different James Breedlove's in this time period, 2 in Lunenburg, 1 in Essex and 1 in King William. To throw another wrinkle into the fray, Kindness Shorter was married 1st to John Shorter who died in 1758. Their son James Shorter married a Lucy Woodson or Childry. Dear Martha, In your note concerning the age of male tithables, that age was almost always 21. Sometimes this age was briefly changed to 18, but this age-exception was always noted on the tax list. I've never seen a tithable as young as 16. At least, that has been my experience. Marilyn Owen
Don, Thank you for the info on Jorden Breedlove and the land in Coffee Co., Ala. You have begun to crumble the brick wall I have faced since the late '60s. Dear Bill, I have a few thoughts on the James and Lucretia scenario. I don't know how helpful they are, but. . . The Lucy Watkins could be William Watkins' granddaughter, Lucy, the daughter William and Mary Osborne Watkins. Lucy married Col. Thomas Spencer on 5 Apr 1781, just days after the will was written. Robert Breedlove first appears on a Lunenburg County, VA Tithe List with James Breedlove in 1751. If a male is tithable when he is 16, this would mean that Robert was born in about 1735. It would also mean that Robert was 29 in 1764 when James died. I have never understood why he was not mentioned in any way when his father's estate was settled. I thought Charles and Spencer were probably children of James, Jr. and brothers of Sina, Elizabeth and Kindness. Is there any proof of any of this? Martha
The summary of James and Lucretia Breedlove was very interesting. Please, when people respond do it to the entire list so we can all learn. Martha
The following is a postulated family scenario for James and Lucretia Breedlove from my available source material. In addition to some of our most available resource materials, as much attention as possible was given to the influence of neighboring families in the Lunenburg/Charlotte Co, VA. YOUR CONSIDERATE REVIEW AND COMMENTS WILL BE APPRECIATED. The wife of James has long been identified as Lucretia. Someone over time has suggested that her last name was Watkins. The will of William Watkins, Apr 02, 1781, (Charlotte Co Will Bk 1, 1765-1791, p.44-45) not only lists the names of his children but includes a witness of a Lucy Watkins. Lucy or Lucretia may be a sister of William. Or, Lucy may be a variation of the name Lucretia. James, Sr is thought to have died in 1764. From Lunenburg Co, VA James, Jr and Robert show up about 1749 with frequent entries 1752-1762. Robert's will in Charlotte Co, VA Will Bk 2, 1791-1805 is dated Dec 22, 1791 and he was deceased in Feb 1792. James, Jr is listed as deceased in a Lunenburg Co, VA Deed Bk 17, p.17 in an entry dated Jul 12, 1797. James, Jr's wife Mary is mentioned in a land sale to Francis Smithson on Jan 02, 1752 in Lunenburg Co, VA deed records. There are numerous references to James, Jr and Mary through 1757. The latest reference to James, Jr and Mary Breedlove is in Lunenburg Co, VA Deed Bk 3, p.41 on Sep 01, 1773. No mention of Mary was found between 1773 and 1797 when James, Jr is mentioned as deceased. No mention of a second marriage by James, Jr is found. There is no mention of a Kindness married to this James, Jr. James Breedlove, Jr is a resident and landowner according to Lunenburg deed records from at least 1752 to at least 1795 (43 years) with Smiths, Crenshaws adjacent landowners for at least 30 years, with Johnson, Smithson, Sammons, Stembridge, Wilkerson for lesser times. James and Mary Breedlove have daughters Sina, Kindness, and Elizabeth, who are mentioned in various deed and court records. While two of these daughters are married by 1773-4, these girls could have been born between 1750 and 1770, which would account for Kindness' birthdate of about 1767 and marriage to William Stembridge, Jr in 1785. Sina was apparently married to a John Wilkerson by 1773. James Breedlove sold land to Sine Breedlove of Charlotte Co, Va on Apr 11, 1787, implying John was deceased. On Oct 9, 1788 Siney Breedlove is witness to a land sale of Wm Stembridge, with John Wilkerson mentioned as deceased. Sina Breedlove married Stephen Shelton on Jun 06, 1792. Elizabeth is apparently married to William Sammons as early as 1774. A deed record of Feb 8, 1779 mentions them. They are mentioned as husband/wife on Jul 12, 1797 in Lunenburg Co, VA Deed Bk 17, p.67. Robert during this same time period apparently has no wife. He owns a little land. He and brother James both are frequently named in Lunenburg court records 1752-1762. Robert is a very frequent jurer. Robert's will of Dec 22, 1791 (probate Feb 09, 1792) names no children but bequeaths to niece Sina (daughter of brother James), to sister (or step sister) Isabel Johnson Breedlove, and to a Sally Almond. John Breedlove married Elizabeth Watkins and his family is accounted for in his will dated May 16, 1799, probated Dec 02, 1799, in Charlotte Co, VA Will Bk 2 1791-1805, p.30 Benjamin Breedlove is married to a Mary Watkins and has a son John Watkins Breedlove. Isbel Johnson Breedlove and Kindness Shorter sign as witnesses with Robert Breedlove on Apr 6, 1760 to a will of John Smithson (Early Wills 1746-1765 Lunenburg Co, VA), suggesting that they may be sisters of Robert Breedlove and daughters of James, Sr and Lucretia Breedlove. Charles and Spencer Breedlove are also suggested as children of James, Sr and Lucretia Breedlove by Hope Perry Breedlove, Breedlove Genealogical History, p.15. There are at least two Spencer families in the Lunenburg/Charlotte Co, VA area for whom Spencer may be a namesake. I do not know if the Spencer families might have any origin in Essex Co. Charles and Spencer evidently moved into neighboring Caswell Co, NC prior to the Revolutionary War. Charles Breedlove married Sally Fletcher in 1774 and had several Fletcher family neighbors in Caswell Co, NC. YOUR CRITIQUE PLEASE. I also hope you can add some source information. Bill Breedlove

Married Mary E. Martin June of 1874. They had three daughters that I know of Zannie E., Laura B., and Dorcas J. The latter being my GGgrandmother. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Robert Malone
Am attempting to fit together the family of David and Nancy Breedlove. After moving from Wilson Co., TN where they were married in 1810, to Simpson County, Kentucky where they are listed on the 1820-1850 census, it is unlikely we can ever prove who their children were. Both David who died before 1840 and Nancy in 1857 lived all of their adult lives in Simpson County where most of the records were destroyed in a fire. Ellen Byrne just sent me some information that shows that Warren Jackson Breedlove gave Simpson County as his place of birth so that now fits him into the above family and the only family of Breedlove's that were there when Warren and his brother Giles were born. The following is a synopsis of the 1820 to 1840 census listings for David with my best guesses for his children: 1820 1 Male under 10 Cornelius Vaughan 1812 1 Male under 10 Unknown M1 1813-1816 or 1817-1820 1 Male under 10 Warren Jackson 18 Jan 1817 1 Female under 10 Unknown F1 1810-1820 1 Female under 10 Unknown F2 1810-1820 1 Female under 10 Unknown F3 1810-1820 1 Female under 10 Unknown F4 1810-1820 1830 1 Male under 5 Unknown M2 1826-30 1 Male under 5 Giles Sep 1825 1 Male 5 - 10 Thomas M. 1822 1 Male 10 - 15 Warren Jackson 18 Jan 1817 1 Male 10 - 15 Unknown M1 1813-1816 or 1817-1820 1 Male 15 - 20 Cornelius Vaughan 1812 1 Female under 5 Unknown F5 1825-1830 1 Female 5 - 10 Unknown F6 1820-1825 1 Female 5 - 10 Unknown F7 1820-1825 1 Female 15 - 20 Unknown F1,2,3 or 4 1810-1815 1 Female 15 - 20 Unknown F1,2,3 or 4 1810-1815 1840 1 Male 5 - 10 David Wallace 1833 1 Male 15 - 20 Giles Sep 1825 1 Male 15 - 20 Thomas M. 1822 1 Female under 5 Unknown F8 1835-1840 1 Female 10 - 15 Unknown F5 1825-1830 1 Female 15 - 20 Unknown F6 or F7 1820-1825 1 Female 20 - 30 Unknown F1,2,3 or 4 1810-1820 1850 widow Nancy is listed with only one child David W. age 17. Note that before the 1830 census two of the four unknown daughters either died or were married and that a third one of these four either died or married before 1840. Unknown daughter F6 or F7 died or married before 1840 along with Unknown sons M1 and M2. Cornelius married in 1836 so he is not in the household. Evidently Warren Jackson has left home seeking his fortune after his father David died. I have only a few clues as to the identity of the eight daughters. One could be a Mary Breedlove b 1836/7 who married a John Stewart. One could be an Ann (or Nancy) Breedlove who married an A. C. Harris, and another could be a Sarah Frances Breedlove b 1837 who married a G. C. Turner. These three families lived in Simpson County and the wives are listed in Vital Records as having children in the 1850's. There is a Harriett Breedlove b 1819 living in Logan County next door to Simpson in 1850 who may be the last female 20-30 from the 1840 census. There are also two children, David Decatur Breedlove b 1844 and Virginia S. Breedlove b 1843 living in other households in Logan County in 1850, so Harriett could be the widow of Unknown M1 who has already died before 1850, leaving these two children. As to the two unknown sons, there are several possibilities. One could be the Milton Breedlove b 1814 and the Nathan b 1812 who lived next to each other in Kansas and Missouri on two censuses. I had placed them both as sons of Martin and Elizabeth Carr, but Nathan may be the son of Martin while Milton is the son of David. There is also a John Breedlove b 1828 KY living in Wisconsin in 1850 that may be Unknown M2. I have communicated with descendants of all five of the known sons so hopefully there are some more family stories out there that can help piece this family together. Working in a county where most records were burned is not very fruitful. You have to use every little scrap of data you can find and hopefully get enough pieces to make the puzzle somewhat clearer. I'll never get all of the pieces but at least I've tried. Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Tom

Martin and other Breedloves are in seperate tax lists, indicating the others lived in the western half of the country and Martin in the eastern Simpson County Deed Book 2, pg 112, 11 Jan 1873: Samuel Page & wife Permelia, formerly Breedlove, & Ellen Breedlove, daughter of John Breedlove, deceased, all of Graves County, KY, to Wallis Breedlove. Valuable consideration; all our right and title in a tract on the Middle Fork of Drakes Creek, adjoining William Lovell's survey, a survey in name of William Durnal, Shields, Martin Breedlove, containing 18 acres, being same land patented by Martin Breedlove on 29 May 1826 while Joseph Desha was Governor of Kentucky. Signed Polly Tibbs, formaerly Breedlove, Permelia Page, formerly Breedlove; Ellen Breedlove and Samuel Page. Acknowledged 14 Nov 1873 by Polly Tibbs, Permelia Page, Ellen Breedlove and Samuel Page before J. T. Seay, Deputy Clerk of Graves Co., KY. C. J. Whitlemore, Clerk. Evidently this is Martin's son John who married Casandra Mitchell, but who is the Polly Breedlove Tibbs???? Wallis is most likely David Wallace Breedlove, son of David Watts & Nancy Breedlove. Tom
I have just been discussing this with a Stembridge researcher. I found a marriage listed for William Stembridge, Jr. to Elizabeth Wallace Green on 30 June 1808. I have assumed this is the second marriage for this William Stembridge. If this is true, then Kindness would have died before 1808. William Stembridge, Jr. died before 12 May 1820 when his will was probated in Putnam County, GA. Does anyone have a copy of William's will? Martha
