I had written recently to my cousin Wayne Breedlove who lives in FL, and who has the Civil War diary written by John W. Breedlove from 1862 to 1864. In it, he said that on one of the pages was listed the name Elisha WATTS and that he died 24 July 1864. Another name on the page was Burgess. Now, this could just be coincidence, or could be some sort of relative. JWB does list some family names in the diary too, like and Uncle Estes he had gone to see. I looked in my files for the Breedlove family and there was a Mary Dawson who was married to a Henry Estes. I then looked a little further in this same family group and there was and Elizabeth Dawson married to a Rumsy Watts. I know this doesn't really mean anything, but I wanted to throw it out there and will include the family group at the end of this to show what I have and the dates. Could this Elisha Watts be named for Elizabeth's grandfather, Elisah Bailey, a RW soldier in Adair co., KY? Maybe.... I have attached a revised listing of those lines that I have in my Unconnected database that I still have not found any connections for (that I can prove). There are several Virgina families that censuses show there are sons for but whom I have not been able to identify, who could possibly be some of those in the Unconnected List. Charles & Theodosia Clevinger Breedlove had two sons and I can only identify one as Alexander. Cornelius & Jane Beck Breedlove had three sons, none of whom can I identify. And the #15 William on the list had at least two unknown sons. The death date or year for Charles, Cornelius and William is known but I guess no one has ever investigated to see if there are wills or probate for any of them. Hope this helps. Dear Tom King & Carol Wilkerson, Tom, you've done some great detective work in discovering the origins of Wm. M. Breedlove. I agree, it surely looks like he was the first son of David Watts & Nancy Breedlove. Carol, if Wm. M. was born in 1811, in the area which is now Simpson Co., KY, it was not Simpson County then--Simpson was formed in 1819. Depending upon the location of the David Watts Breedlove farm, they were either in Logan or Warren Co. I suspect it was Warren, as many Breedloves settled that county. David W. & Nancy must have been among the first [if not THE first] Breedloves to come to Middle Kentucky. I know that David W.'s parents, William & Mary Watts Breedlove, did not come until some few years later. Carol, the graves of William & Mary Watts Breedlove are still extant in Simpson Co. What is more fitting than naming their first son William Martin Breedlove after both their fathers? I have long suspected that the Mankin middle name whose source was in LDS records was an error in reading an old faded document but this has not been confirmed as yet. What Carol has found is an old letter written by a grand-daughter of William (whatever his middel name is) stating that she knew his father was named David and that her father had an Uncle Jack Breedlove in Laclede County, Missouri. This Uncle Jack is Warren Jackson Breedlove who married Elizabeth Lowry, dau of Thomas Lowry and Cinderilla Breedlove, dau of Martin Breedlove, and the Warren Jackson Breedlove I had earlier determined to be a son of David and Nancy Breedlove. My earlier synopsis of the Family of David and Nancy Breedlove shows an unknown Male 1 that fits exactly with what is known about William Mankin, except in my rundown I only gave a birth year span for M1 after 1812, forgetting that they could have had a son in 1811 before son Cornelius and after their marriage in 1810. Descendants of Warren Jackson Breedlove and William Mankin(?) Breedlove thus are descendants of both William Breedlove, Revolutionary War Soldier, and his brother Martin Breedlove. Tom King

In searching this film, I found only two Breedloves listed in Rockbridge Co: 51st Dist., Series No. M432, Microfilm No. 973, census page no. 430: C. S. Breedlove, 45, male, "man: of cheese", b VA (nothing further noted by enumerator); Amanda M., 40, female, b VA; Meary E., (age is difficult to read, possibly 17), female, b VA; John W., 17, male, farmer. Lexington, Series No. M432, Microfilm No. 973, census page no. 462: William Breedlove, 16, male, tailor, b in VA. (Note: he appears to be living with several other tailors in the Baker household - they apparently manufactured caps). I then referred to my census index CDs for subsequent records. The information from the 1860 index follows. The 1870 index did not have Rockbridge Co and the 1880 disk had none of Virginia listed, alas. A study of the actual 1860 census records would likely be more helpful - unfortunately, I do not have access to those at present. I also found a Thomas Heslip, 59, and an Asa Haislip, 35, living in the area during 1850 (the only two in Rockbridge that I could find). Asa was listed on p 454, fairly close to C.S. Breedlove: Asa Haislip, 35; Martha, 38; James (L. or G.) C., 10; Sarah F., 8; John W., 6; Maria L., 4; Robert W., 1. Thomas Heslip was located further away (Lexington, I believe): Thomas Heslip, 59; Ann, 47; Martha A., 17; Thomas H. (?), 15; James, 12; Joseph Spriggs Heslip, 11; Adaline, 8; Sarah I (?), 6. I found 26 Breedloves (various spellings) listed and enumerated in the 1850 VA census - I copied down the names as listed in the index, along with the county where they resided. If any of you would like for me to look up the actual record on any of these, please let me know and I will be happy to do so the next time I am at the library. They also have the MA 1850 records on CD Rom and have ordered the CT/RI set. I had tentatively identified her as a daughter of James R. Breedlove and Nancy Simmons of Rutherford Co., North Carolina, and as a grand-daughter of Charles Breedlove and Sally Fletcher. Messages back and forth have confirmed that identity. The latest message which I have edited and attached is part of a letter written by a grandchild who knew her. Some background information that I knew beforehand is that a Mary Breedlove had married a Daniel Wester on 8 Feb 1851 in Roane County, Tennessee. He was 38 yrs older than old, yet they had three children before he died in 1857. She remarried again in 1860 to a Hiram Gibson who again was much older than she and they had one daughter Mary who died in infancy. All of the other known children of James & Nancy Simmons Breedlove are shown on the 1850 census in Greene Co., MO, where her brother John is shown with four children from a previous marriage to his 1st cousin Sarah Ann Breedlove, dau of William & Amy Hair Breedlove, with a new wife, widow Rebecca Wilkinson Ramey who he married in January 1850. This is most likely the family that Mary Ann was living with in the attached story. I had wondered how this Mary Ann Breedlove could have ended up in Roane County, Tennessee when all of the other Breedlove's had already moved from there to Greene County before 1850. The attached story explains that quite easily. The only error I can find is that it states she was born in Missouri which is understandable since she came from there before she was married, but all census reports give her birth as NC, and most likely Rutherford County, NC where James and Nancy lived. I thought everyone would enjoy reading a firsthand account of the life of an early Breedlove. It helps once in a while to put some meat on the bones of all these skeletons we are trying to hang some dates and places on, to see what their lives really were like. Enjoy! C. Wann family in the 1960s. It is handwritten on lined paper 5 x 8". ........... Grandmother Wester's maiden name was Mary Breedlove. She was born in Missouri. A nurse by profession she was keeping house for her widowed brother and four children when grandfather came over from Tenn to buy some saddle and carriage horses. Granmother was also an accomplished horsewoman and had helped break these horses. Young Dr. Wester took the horses home alright but returned for more for other folks & the lovely petite little lady for himself. Her brother was remarrying anyway. He was a handsome man of 65 and wealthy plantation owner. It was a truly love match and they were very happy. It was his 2nd marriage and he had children older than grandmother at 25. They had three children. Margaret Louise William Asbury and Charles (he was the only uncle I ever knew) ............ Grandmother Wester married there father just at the beginning of the Civil War. Uncle Charles was between one & two years of age when grandfather Wester died. All of grandmother's nursing skill couldn't save him when he had lobar pneumonia. She was left with three small children a huge plantation a great many slaves to manage. She & Grandfather Gibson were well acquainted and he being a fine gentleman there were married a year later. He somehow took care of the three children's money from their father's estate all thru the war and gave it to them when they were grown $2000.00 each. When he died grandmother came to live with her only daughter & came out to Oregon with them in 1876. She did all the sewing, washing, ironing. Mother was having babies pretty fast so it was a great boon to her. Grandmother also raised the geese, picked their feathers twice yearly, carded the wool & wove the coverlets & rugs on the spinning wheel & loom. Knitted socks & sweaters, etc, etc. Gold Old Days life. She was also a tailoress. All this & she was only half pint in size.
