I don't know if the actual digital documents have more about the individual or not but if someone is looking for one of those people, I would suggest they check the web site out. I tried to download the images but couldn't. Thanks again, Linda

    1. [BREEDLOVE-L] Internet Breedlove research
    2. MR THOMAS S JONES
    3. Hello Gang, This is a brief note to catch you up on recent developments at RootsWeb as they pertain to our surname: RootsWeb has created what they call a "resource cluster" for the Breedlove surname which is a central website which contains links to GenConnect boards, search engines, plus an e-mail gateway to the subscription address for this mailing list (well, since you're already subscribed, you don't need to worry about that one!). I asked for the GenConnect Breedlove query board to be created several months ago and act as the coordinator for that page (I'll tell you where to find it in a minute!). This month, to inaugurate their new resource clusters, RootsWeb created an additional slate of GenConnect Breedlove boards in the following categories: Bible Records, Biographies, Deeds, Obituaries, Pensions, and Wills. Additionally on the resource page is a guestbook (!), a calendar (presumably to schedule reunions and such?), and a place for links to personal Breedlove pages on RootsWeb. This is all pretty dizzying and the possibilities for information exchange are endless! I've put in a request to RootsWeb to "adopt" the resource cluster page. Visit the page at http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/b/r/BREEDLOVE/ and try not to get lost. There seems to be several search engines and databases to choose from. Keep in mind that all of the GenConnect boards operate using different rules. Some, such as the query board, are wide open for posts to be made, but posts to others can only be made through an intermediary, such as me. I'm still learning about all this, too. Also, my personal Breedlove page contains several links to resources elsewhere on the internet plus links personal web pages of other Breedlove researchers. This one is at http://pages.prodigy.com/VSVE92A/breemail.html OK that note wasn't so brief.... Your Humble Servant, Tom

In my home library I have DeMond's THE LOYALISTS IN NC DURING THE REVOLUTION - the appendices are not indexed and most of them are lists of regiments, etc. I did not see any Breedloves mentioned in that work but I may have missed them. If I find anything at Godfrey, will let everyone know. Someone else on the list asked about ship passenger lists - I have searched through thousands of names on those lists and have never run across the name Breedlove in any of the years prior to 1750. Not one. Odd. Linda

    2. Marc, It is my belief at this point that the Breedloves came from the Yorkshire area of England. This is not the usual place of origin for people emigrating to Virginia, but Captain John Smith came from this area. There is a family named Broadlove with the same given names used be the early Breedloves in Lincolnshire in 1730. I have ordered some parish records from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. I want to search these records for further clues, but I do believe these are the ancestors of Charles. Someone told me there were Breedloves who fought for England in the Revolutionary War. I just have to find out how to get the names of the British soldiers in that war. Martha Breedlove Kahn (Los Altos Hills, CA)

    3. Dear Cousin, Suzie just posted the message below. I don't recall when she posted it the first time, but perhaps what people questioned was the "grandfather" bit. Since Charles Breedlove [apparently the "father" of the American Breedloves], was an adult when he appeared in the Essex records in 1708, so born before 1687, your Civil War soldier would have been at least his 3rd great grandson. I think many of the Breedlove families thought the name might be Welch. We may never figure out for sure, where the name came from. Marilyn [from Suzie] This was from something I found on J. Wesley Breedlove, in Arkansas, in the rootsweb archives, it says: >>>snip<<.............During the late war he enlisted under Gen. Price in the Confederate service, but owing to being accidentally wounded in the hand in 1863, he was compelled to give up soldiering for a time. His grandfather came from Wales and settled in Virginia, where the father of Clay B. was born.......... >snip<

This was from something I found on J. Wesley Breedlove, in Arkansas, ........... His grandfather came > from Wales and settled in Virginia, where the father of Clay B. was born.......... I say again that the information given in Goodspeed's is WRONG! John Wesley Breedlove was the son of Clay Breedlove and Amelia Reid. Clay was the son of Henry Breedlove and Martha Rimmer. That means John Wesley's grandfather was Henry Breedlove who was born about 1806 in Virgina, from the 1850-1870 censuses. The grandfather of John Wesley and the father of Clay are the same person, i.e. Henry Breedlove. Henry could not have come from Wales and be born in Virginia at the same time, therefore this line in the article is wrong. Tom King

    1. [BREEDLOVE-L] Breedlove, name origin
    2. Marilyn A. Owen
    3. Dear Cousins, I copied these entries from our Breedlove site, last year. Marilyn The Historical Research Center FAMILY NAME HISTORY BREEDLOVE The English surname Breedlove is classified as being a habitation name. Habitation names are those family names which are derived from either the location of the place of residence of the initial bearer or from the name of the town or willage from whence he hailed. In some instances, a habitation names refers to a residence which was distinguished by a sign or engraving usually displayed over the door. In this instance, the surname Breedlove originally referred to a person who lived by a large hill. The etymology of this name lies in the combination of the old English terms, "brad" and "hlaw" meaning broad hill. This surname may also be derived from one of the two place names called Brodley, located in Lancashire and Essex. Variants of the surname Breedlove include Broadlove and Broadley. One of the earliest references to this name or to a variant is a record of one Samuel Breedlove, son of James Breedlove and his wife, Ann, who was baptized on the 25th of July, 1731 in Scopwick (Lincoln). However research is of course ongoing and this name may have been documented even earlier than the date indicated above. The modern spelling of most English surnames is comparatively recent and is usually a phonetic rendering of the name which is found in parish registers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. However, it should be noted that the name itself, in its various orthographic forms, may have been borne by the same family for a previous three or four hundred years. Notable bearers of this surname include John Breedlove of the Virginia Line, who fought in the American Revolutionary War. A military record also mentions his brother, Martin Breedlove, who was aged 62 in 1833. BLAZON OF ARMS: Argent, on a chevron gules, a two eagle's heads erased in chief of the last and an anchor in base azure, three bezants all within a bordure of the third. The term "louve" was widely used as a flattering nickname for a brave man or warrior, in the context of the fierceness of the she-wolf in protecting her young. Breedlove in that sense would be an English nickname describing the warrior of broad stature. --------------- Tom

In the 12,000 I have connected, there were a lot of illiterate folks, but most were hard working farmers, with many soldiers, a few sheriffs, justice of the peace, doctors, judges and even an ambassador. I haven't found any that gave lawyer or attorney as their occupation on a census. Regarding my previous message about persecution, my own research of those times has centered on the Huguenots. Since one derivation of the BREEDLOVE name is from France, meaning a trapper of wolves, I tried looking at possible emigrants from France who came to England to avoid persecution and then later came to Virgina. There are some possibilities in those names but my ability to read French is much worse than my German, so I haven't made much progress. It is an area that needs further research. Tom King
