Just because William is an orphan of John Breedlove doesn't mean that John is dead or even that John is his father. John's wife could be dead and he was given legal custody of his orphan children or John was given guardianship of a brother's son or his deceased father's son William. > "The Breedloves came from somewhere in the Blue Ridge > Mountains in Virginia. John stayed around > Helmsburg until quite old, being known as Uncle John, then went > to South Dakota, where he died" I have looked at this tale for over 20 years and have only been able to verify one item, that John Breedlove did live in Brown County, Indiana and die in the Dakotas where he was on the 1880 census and his third wife (widow) Jerusha was on the 1900 census. NONE of the other data in this story can possibly pertain to the family of John Breedlove and Elizabeth Adams. To start with there was no child named Henry. There also was no son named James, though there was a son Thomas James Breedlove but he died before Oct 1877 in Brown County, IN, and not in 1902 as the story relates. No adult James Breedlove is on any census in Brown Co. Indiana from 1850 to 1900. John was born in 1809 and could not have fought in the war of 1812, his wives were Cynthia Mitchner, Orinda Followell and Mrs. Jerusha Miller, not a Polly Ann among them, and no sets of twins that I can verify. The family of John & Elizabeth Adams Breedlove was certainly there long before 1830 as several of their children married in Indiana in 1824 and 1827, so this story evidently belongs to another group of Breedlove's or someone has confused a few generations. One thought is that the four brothers John, James, William and Henry are sons of another unknown Breedlove, and that the first John the story tells of is the John who married Elizabeth Adams. James could be the one who married Nancy Davis in Henrico Co., VA in 1799 and who lived in Gibson and Posey County, IN 1820-1860 and quite possibly the one on the Madison Co., KY Tax Lists. William and Henry evidently moved on to other states and I have no logical candidates for them, though it appears that Henry was the youngest of these boys. They all would have been adults by 1830 so the Lewis Henry Breedlove of Shelby Co., IN is not one of them. Another thought is the Madison County, Kentucky tax lists and census showing James, William and John. Charles Breedlove who married Sally Fletcher also had contacts with Madison Co., KY and his daughter Polly married William Hamilton in 1815 in Knox Co., KY. Could it be that Charles's deceased brother Spencer Breedlove is the father of this lost family of Breedlove's???? All that is known of Spencer is that his heirs received a land grant for his Revolutionary War service in Tennessee that was assigned to someone else by these heirs. Tom King

I really am enjoying the material being offered. I've long owed Bill Breedlove the picture of my great grandparents and their sons and daughter, and I'm sharing that with the rest of you at the same time. You may see them at http://members.xoom.com/PlaytymeWeb/breedloves.html. Bill, I'm sorry for the delay and if you want it snail mailed, just say so. Barbara Barbara B. Tom, Thanks for the lead. Something else for me to follow up on, since William Jackson Breedlove was my great grandfather. Seems like we never know everything. Good Morning, Does anyone know who maybe the parents of Ruben Breedlove whom married Priscilla Bolton and are listed in the Hamilton Co. TN census of 1850. They are both in their 80's. They are from S.C. We now have proof that Elisha Breedlove and Jacob Breedlove are the son's of Ruben and Priscilla Breedlove. Also, Is there any war records for Ruben? I'm sorry I have no birth or death dates on hand , my file is with another family member. Thank You, Suzie Breedlove

Steve-re Major Breedlove. I dont know anything else about him. I even assumed perhaps that was his first name. I have seen some people in old records named Doctor Jones--2 yrs old? Jackie-re Spencer. Spencer breedlove, pg 267, roster of soldiers from NC in Rev. served Cont. line 1781-1785, warrant 1651 shows 640 ac deeded to his heirs, dated 30 Mar 1785, rec from WAR Dept, 2 slips one showing him enrolled in capt Robt Moore's Co from Caswell Co NC, no date, the other a payroll slip from 26 May to Dec 1778 comm of Lt Col Archibald Lytle. From TN land office, NC, No. 997 granted unto James Sanders, assignee of Spencer Breadloe's heirs, 640 ac in Davidson Co on the east fork of Stone's River beg. at Stockley Donelson's corner, elm & sugar tree, an area directly east of 320 poles each way, dated 18 May 1789. Warrant 1652, this must have been SE part of County, there is a town there now on the Stone River, Donelson, TN. Jackie-if I find something else on him, will send it. Ellen Byrne, dande@mail.tds.net
Hello Everyone I was reviewing the information posted by Tom King, Ellen Byrne, etc. and the idea for a group project came to mind. It would be really neat to form a volunteer group of BREEDLOVE-L mailing list members interesting in developing a web page showing the the known details and service record for any BREEDLOVEs serving in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War. Listing the parents names and details of service record if known helps tie them into peoples family trees. Historical associations and reenactment groups have created web pages for some of the Civil War units which provide history, muster rolls, etc. Links to military unit web pages could be included if available. Thanks, Tom, for another good transcription of interesting information about "Breedloves." In the source material available to you for these transcriptions, there is at least one incorrectly transcribed name [not by you, but by the one whose material was available to you]. So this is a good opportunity to remind the list to use published sources as our guides, but to verify the published sources if we are interested in a particular entry. I think my great grandfather, Benjamin Isaac Breedlove [B. I. Breedlove], who was the only "Breedlove" to serve in NC's 1st Jr. Res. Co. B., would not mind if I use him as an example of how easy it is for even the most careful transcriber (whoever published your source, Tom) to misread one letter - thus creating the non-existant person below, B. J. Breedlove. tomking wrote: > This is a multi-part message in MIME format. > --------------91C26580E21E6E3816DE5720 > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii > Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > > Attached is a listing of Breedlove's who fought for the Confederacy. > There is some duplication as some units got decimated and reformed into > other regiments or the men got separated from their units and joined up > with another.
