    2. Hi list, This note was sent to me off list and I am sending t up in hopes that someone on the list might be able to help. Thanks, Brian Gordon http://members.aol.com/briangord From: cyates@bayou.com (Carolyn Yates) Dear Brian, I found your web-site and I am interested in the Breedlove family line. My father, Cecil Benjamin Breedlove was born in Hope, Ark (about 1918). His father's name was Thomas Watkins Breedlove. I'm not sure where he was born. Do you have any knowledge of any other Breedloves from Ark. or La. (I didn't notice any on the your site). There are other Breedloves in this area. The father born approx. 1920 in Ark. is Carroll Breedlove, but as far as I can tell, there is no relation to me.

    3. Dear Cousins, Because of hectic upcoming vacation schedules and a huge pile of catch-up work to do in the genealogy line (i.e., a year's worth of journals to read and two year's of back journal material that I need to add but haven't had time for), I am leaving my surname lists until after the holidays. It seems that the further I go ahead, the more behind I get! So I decided I need to really take a "leave of absence" and get myself somewhat organized (I periodically do this . . . it lasts about two weeks before I start digging myself another hole!). Please don't hesitate to contact me personally if you wish - I just need to cut down the busy activity of my six surname lists and such to make more room in my increasingly demanding schedule to get some of this primary grunt work out of the way. However, don't forget to let me know of any major revelations that you uncover (like, are the Breedloves Irish, English or ???)! My best to you all and have a wonderful holiday season. See you back on the list in 2000! Linda

In fact one of the Laclede Co people-cant remember which one now a Jolly or one that married into the Bolles line--marched thru Laclede Co on the Trail of Tears as a soldier--and went back later and settled there." Additional information on these Cherokee names: A John Bowles with about 63 people migrated to AR and OK in 1810 VIA THE TENNESSEE RIVER COURSE. John Jolly (whose brother Tahlenteskee migrated to AR and OK by 1809), himself migrated by 1818. These are the Old Settler Cherokees who exchanged lands east of the Mississippi for lands west of same some 30 years prior to the Trail of Tears. There were both land routes and river routes used. Their interaction with whites along the way ranged from buying liquor, being left aside due to illness, etc. Some whites, like my own John Chisholm, traveled with them both as family members and /or in some formal capacity such as interpreters, traders, etc. Sam Houston was one of these early Old Settlers. I heartily recommend a book by Stanley W. Hoig, THE CHEROKEES AND THEIR CHIEFS, which is a most recent book on the Cherokees. Stan does an especially good job of handling the involved genealogies. Many of his related articles are in the "Chronicles of Oklahoma". And, as you read some of these accounts, you too may have an opinion of Andrew Jackson. Bill Breedlove

There is a story about Reuben Bolles that when the war ended, Reuben took down the flag, folded it and handed it to the widow of a confederate soldier. Did you read the message from Bob Brown re Elizabeth Lowery - Cherokee Indian-gr dau of Cinderilla Breedlove? Have corresponded with Bob before- there are several of us who think our Lowery's were part Indian- but no proof. Our Lowery's were from NC--but they were in warren co Ky by 1810, of course there were Indians in Warren Co. and also Wayne Co Ky, etc. They didn t all go on the Trail of Tears. In fact one of the Laclede Co people-cant remember which one now a Jolly or one that married into the Bolles line--marched thru Laclede Co on the Trail of Tears as a soldier--and went back later and settled there. I was born in OK-lived most of my life in California but now in Idaho and this is the nez perce reservation..The Nez Perce town is Lapwai...the schools in Lapwai do not celebrate Columbus Day--and cant remember but the Indians in OK-probably dont think too much of Andrew Jackson. No entries for Herndon other than one entry for Edward Herndon but a suspiciously familiar one for Edward Hernton that ties in a Mrs. Mary Waller (our Edward Herndon m Mary Waller. He was the s/o William Herndon and Catherine Diggs and she was the d/o John Waller and Mary Pomfrett. Edward and Mary Herndon's dau, Martha, m William Watkins). There were no entries for Breedlove (I tried to guess at all spellings - Breadlove, Broadlove, Bradlove, etc.). For Vol. III: P. 312: Transfer of a number of parcels of land to John Baylor, son of John Baylor, Gent., dec'd, of K&Q Co . . . . . . 3360 acs. (N.L.), K&Q Co, in Drysdale Par; on N. side of Mattapony River . . . 6 Jul 1726, p 500, Adj. Samuel Chapman; on an old line of Col. Peter Beverley, but now the line of Chapman, Bullard, & HERNDON; adj. Edward HERNDON; & Mr. Richard Buckner; 17 Lbs., Money. P 325: Edward HERNTON, of K&Q Co; 400 acs. (N.L.), Spotsyl. Co: adj. Mrs. Mary Waller & Capt. Larkin Chew; 16 Jun 1727, p 91. (Could this be Edward Herndon's mother in law? My records indicate she passed away sometime prior to 1732.) In Vol. IV (1732-1741) a David and Edward Jr. Herndon appear but no Breedloves. Vol. V (1741-1749) - Edward and Edward Jr. Herndon names but no Breedloves. Vol. VI (1749-1762) - The first Breedloves appear : James and Joseph Breadlove and Robert Breedlove. The earliest of these: p 74: Joseph BREADLOVE, 400 acs., Lunenburgh Co. On the Head of the Middle Fork of Meherrin Riv.; 23 Mar 1752, p 85. 2 Lbs. James and John Herndon or Herrendon also appear in this volume. Vol. VII (1762-1776) - James BREADLOVE and James and Robert BREEDLOVE. Also there is a William Heardin and a James Hearn but no Herndons. These grants may be viewable in the VA Archives Land Grands Digital section if anyone has the patience to find them and download. For the heck of it, I also checked The Vestry Book and Register of St. Peter's Parish in New Kent and James City Counties, VA, 1706-1786 and Vestry Book of Blisland Parish, New Kent and James City Counties, VA 1721-1786 for the Breedlove and Herndon names. Nothing. Also Vestry Book of Stratton Major Parish, King and Queen Co, VA, 1729-1783. Also nothing.

    3. In answer to Tom King, I have the first volume of "Cavaliers & Pioneers", compiled by Nell Nugent, abstracts of the Virginia Land Patents, Volumes 1-5. The last entry in Volume 5 is dated 5 June 1666. I cannot find William Herndon listed at all, even though I checked variant spellings. You likely will be successful in finding him if you check the later volumes in this series. Robert Bagby is mentioned once in the records I have, in New Kent Co. in 1664, having land bordering 200 acres that was granted to Jno Maddison. Marilyn Owen

Since William Herndon, ancestor of the line that eventually married into the Watkins and Breedlove lines, was the first by that surname in America, this bears some further digging. He received 430 acres and 64 acres for transporting ten people by himself and another 1800 acres and 1000 acres for transporting another 56 people in conjunction with Robert Bagby. Don't have the dates in front of me but some of this was before 1673, long before we think Charles Breedlove was born. The land was in New Kent CO (now King & Queen) which is not that far from Essex Co. The land patents are all of record but I have not dug into the actual court orders to see if they mention the names of those he transported. There's no telling at what age Charles Breedlove did come over (that is if he really did emigrate and wasn't born here) but it would have had to be between 1690 and 1708. Does anyone have the Court Orders or copies of the original patents for William Herndon that give the names of those he transported? Tom King

    3. Dear Linda, Tom, and Bill: You all had me up til 4 a.m. this morning reading Breedlove and related material! I must tell you, I was almost afraid of opening my email this morning, not knowing what to expect. I was so happy to find your messages with information that I might never have had otherwise. I thank each one of you. And now I too understand the greeting - Hello Cousins!!! :-) Linda: On the Cherokee Dawes roll (NARA), I found a Sarah Breedlove: NRFF-75-53A-2287, Record Group 75,Series 53A,Item 2287,Title Enrollment for Sarah Breedlove,Dates ca.1898-ca.1914, Tribe: Cherokee, Type: Parent, Sex: Female,Census Card Number: IW167. I haven't sent for this information yet from the Archives. I had intended too not knowing there was any other way. If this is my GGrandmother Sarah Breedlove (maiden - Dillard) I will be very very happy. Should I send for this record from NARA? Or would you have that information available? You said that there is an "Alice" on the lists. Humm, this Alice sounds like she would be worth looking at closer, for my Mary Alice, don't you think? >I believe you can access those through our archive files, which it sounds like you have gone through. If not, let me know and I will attach and send to you directly the old communications.< And yes, I would love to see these older communications. I did look at the BREEDLOVE_L list archives, but they appear to only go back 6 months or so - If there are earlier archived material from this list, I don't know how to access those. I'll get back online this evening and see if I can find any earlier files... It is definately possible that I stuck my foot in my mouth telling you I read "all" your archived files! :-[ And Tom said: >I would doubt that the Dillards were Indian as they moved from North Carolina before 1850 to Greene Co., MO., long before the trail of tears. < I truly don't know how the Cherokee connection is made here, Tom. I wish I knew! If not through the Breedloves, then it must be through Sarah Lucinda Dillard's mother's side. I can tell you that my grandmother, Mary Alice, spoke Cherokee fluently, with physical attributes of a native american indian woman. She taught me words and songs in Cherokee when I was very young, but I've forgotten most of those, sad to say. I was about 12 or 13 years old the last time I saw her. And thank you for the Family Group Record. Among many other things, I had no idea where any of these folks were buried. My own immediate family moved from Pueblo, Colorado when I was very young - losing contact with the Breedloves. It's going to take me a few days to assimilate the information you sent me - I want to get familiar with it. I feel in some way I'm reestablishing connections with my family again. It's a wonderful feeling - as I'm sure you all know. Thank you. Also, Tom, I think I can probably supply some pictures of Caleb and perhaps Sarah and others for your Breedlove CD, if you want those. I'll check out those in the next few weeks. You asked about Caleb Breedlove's son, Charles. I think Charles is gone, but he had two children, a son, Charles Jr. and a daughter. My sister has been in touch with his daughter who now lives in Belieze. If your interested, I'll write and let you know more. And Bill, sorry, we left Pueblo when I was 3 years old, with summertime visits there as I was growing up. I missed out on knowing my relatives, cousins, Aunts and Uncles. Yes, I'd love to have the entire genealogy if you want to send it to me. And I don't know what a gedcom file is . . . but I'll take it! :-) I can see right now, opening one door in geneology opens up a whole passageway of new doors! Fascinating! Now it looks like I need to find information on Sarah L. Dillard and family for our Cherokee background. I'll check with the Dillard lists online - perhaps someone there knows something. Also, if any of you know anything about her, or could help me find her, that would be wonderful. PS, I called and spoke to Linda in OK this afternoon, Bill, and found out more about our shared heritage. Such fun! We're going to correspond. Forgive me for the length of this letter. I'm just so happy with all this "new" family history. And a bit awed by your help. Thank you again, Gloria ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Hello! I am new to the list, and new to family research and geneology, (whew! :-) and so happy to have found you all. I wonder if any of you could help me find information on my great grandfather: Caleb Ellis(sp?) Breedlove. I've read all your back lists, and other lists, but haven't seen his name at all. I know very little about him other than I believe he was Indian (part?) Cherokee?, but his name does not show up on any role we have seen. He married Sarah (Dillard?)(perhaps in Oklahoma - 1870 or so. Sarah and Caleb had three children, my grandmother - Mary Alice (nickname Molly), Ola, and another child, I think his name was Frank. I think that Mary Alice was probably taught on a Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma - From oral family history, we were told that she became the first female school teacher to teach at a school there. I suspect she taught right around the turn of the century, but we have no records of it. Mary Alice was born about 1880 - off the reservation. We can't find a birth record for her either. I understand that her mother, Sarah Dillard and her family were part of those who walked the trail of tears. We are told that her picture is inside of a small church in or around the reservation. Apparently, some part of this church was carried on the trail. In the early 1900's, Caleb brought his family from Oklahoma to Pueblo, Colorado, where he worked for the City of Pueblo in maintenance. Now that I've read all your posts, I'm interested to see how he fits into all the Breedlove clan. I appreciate so much any help you can give us. Thank you, Gloria ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com

    3. Does anyone know anything about any of these Breedlove's? Rueben is listed on the 1830 census in S.C. and is married to Priscilla Bolton. Elisha & Jacob were two of their children. Jasper was living with Jacob in the 1860 Walker county Ga. census and was listed as Jasper Sinder. In the next census he was living with Elisha. Jasper is my Ggrandfather and I would like to know more about his family. Glenda Breedlove Runyan

    2. Dottie, I have not done any research on my own about the Herndons who are supposed to be from Kent and I have not heard this story. I did go see the home of Sir Dudley Diggs in Chilham. That was a real treat. Today it is owned by a Greek family who do not allow the locals in the grounds which were designed by the famous landscape architect, Capability Brown. The locals are not happy about this. It is certainly possible that In a message dated 10/12/99 11:11:27 PM, you wrote: <<Hi Martha; Your note kind of rings a bell. The last time i talked to Hope P Breedlove he was thinking along the same lines . His son was over there while in the service and came up with Bredderlow or Bredderlov meaning by a pond or something to that effect. It really would be great to come up with something positive. Did you see the data regarding the fact that Charles may have come over with a Herndon on one of his return trips from England? I do not know where my cousin found it. Keep up the good work.
