    3. Dear Cousins, On the advice of Bill Breedlove, I'm posting a Charlotte Co., VA record I found at Salt Lake last week. Perhaps Bill can explain why he finds this record so significant. Marilyn Owen BREEDLOVE, KINDNESS >From Charlotte Co., VA Order Book 10, p. 111 LDS Film # 1939971 "James Shorter Son and heir of Kindness Breedlove deceased, William Sammons and Elizabeth his wife Stephen Shelton & Sina his wife, William Stambrizes [?] and Kindness his wife, children of James Breedlove decd. - Plaintiffs Against Thomas Pettus and John Pettus Executors of Robert Breedlove deceased. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Plaintifs In Chancary On motion of the Plaintifs by their attorney who having filed this Bill It is ordered that the Rule obtained in the office for a dismission for want of bill, be set aside and that the cause be sent to the Rules."

    3. Tom, Good to learn about the book, "Eastern Cherokee Court of Claims, Guion Miller Roll". Regarding,"Bill's message implies that their were no Breedlove's on the Eastern Cherokee Roll so I would assume that none of these applications were accepted, though I would expect that Mary Eiffert Breedlove was on the roll." Of course I was referring to "Cherokee Roots, Vol !" as my source. I suppose some later edition or some other book such as the one you have revealed might list some of the later successful applications. As far as I know, John Washington Breedlove, for example, whose enrollment number is either 167 or 467, first stricken in 1902, reinstated in 1907, is not listed in the rolls we most likely access. I have not tried to access subsequent enrollees. Regarding Mary Eiffert Breedlove, Carrie W. Breedlove (wife of John Washington Breedlove) in a handwritten letter to Grant Foreman, Oklahoma Historian, essentially writes her autobiography entitled, "Brief History of Carrie Walton Bruton Breedlove." Carrie writes regarding (James) Willoughby, "His wife was Mary Batie Eiffort of Ft. Gibson, daughter of Henry and Susan Eiffort, universally nicknamed 'Rover'. They had 3 sons. The oldest Walton Willoughby (vs Willoughby W. on the Dawes Roll), .....Jack Thompson ..... Curtis Bill (vs William Curtis on the Dawes Roll)". James W(illoughby's) (Dawes #28180) wife must be Mary B(atie Eiffort) (Miller #5730) and children are Willoughby W. (Miller #5731), Jack Thompson (Miller #5732), and William Curtis (Miller #5733), if numbering sequence logic can apply to already known genealogy. Does this make sense? Bill Breedlove

    3. Carole wrote,"," and Breedloves are listed on the Indian rolls. Also, in Oklahoma, Breedlove is considered to be a Cherokee name." As much as I would like to claim more Indian blood than I have, I am convinced from my own Breedlove research, that I will have to find it somewhere else. I understand Carole's pride, and I have only (1/32) to claim. >From the Dawes/Guion Miller Rolls - 1898-1914 for the Western Cherokees: (Cherokee Roots, Vol II) DAWES NR. MILLER NR Breedlove, Carrie W. 4006 Breedlove, Cassie 4009 Breedlove, Charles W. 4012 Breedlove, Emily W. 526 Breedlove, Jack Thompson 743M 5732 Breedlove, James W. 28180 Breedlove, John C. 4008 Breedlove, Mary B. 5998 5730 Breedlove, Priscilla 620 Breedlove, Waller W. 619 Breedlove, William Curtis 744M 5733 Breedlove, William O. 4007 Breedlove, Willoughby W. 6001 There are no Breedloves on the rolls of the Eastern Cherokees. (Cherokee Roots, Vol I). The sources of Cherokee blood on these Western Cherokee rolls are via Caroline W. Breedlove (#4006), my great grandmother, whose Cherokee blood is via her Thomas Chisholm ancestry, AND via Emily W. Breedlove(#526). Emily W. Breedlove was the daughter of Judge William Wilson and Malinda Wharton Chisholm (first married to Thomas Chisholm). Therefore, Emily W. Breedlove's Indian blood has to have come from Judge William Wilson, for whom Wilson's Rock is named on the Arkansas River near Muldrow, OK. Incidently, there are numerous Wilsons on the Western Cherokee rolls, and a few on the Eastern Cherokee rolls. Therefore, the Breedlove name associated with the Cherokees by Emmet Starr, "History of the Cherokee Indian" is by ADOPTION ONLY. I have the application papers of John Washington Breedlove (married to Carrie W. ) whose first application for adoption dated Dec 10,1902 was not approved. John Washington Breedlove (son of Simpson Breedlove and Sarah Hicks from Greene Co, MO) was finally adopted into the Cherokee Nation on Mar 02, 1907 (after his death in 1904) in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Court of the United States, dated Nov 05, 1906, in the cases of Daniel Red Bird, et. al. vs the United States. HIS ADOPTION WAS NOT EASY. Most of the Breedloves on the Dawes Roll are his wife and children. The other Breedlove names on the Dawes/Guion Miller Rolls are the wife and children of Napoleon Bonaparte Breedlove (son of James Waller Breedlove of New Orleans) and Emily W. Wilson. Napoleon Bonaparte Breedlove may have been adopted later, but his name is not on the rolls. Interestingly, Napoleon served as a major of the Confederate Choctaw Mounted Calvary during the Civil War. Tom King further wrote, ". As Caleb and Spencer are sons of Spencer Breedlove and Sarah Ellis, I am wondering how they could make a claim of Cherokee descent. I don't see anything in the ancestry of either Spencer Breedlove or his wife/1st cousin Sarah Ellis that indicates any Cherokee blood, but maybe I'm overlooking something. Does anyone have the complete application for any of the Breedlove's on the Guion Miller Rolls?" Since Spencer (parents James Breedlove and Nancy Simmons of NC) and Sarah Ellis (parents Sally Breedlove and Francis Ellis) were first cousins, one would have to look to grandparents Charles Breedlove and Sally Fletcher for their Breedlove Indian blood and that stretches things a bit. The only opportunity for Indian blood (Cherokee or otherwise) is through the spouses of a Breedlove in my opinion. And I agree with Tom, if Caleph and Spencer applied for Eastern Cherokee membership, I have to wonder upon what basis their application was made. William O. (Bill) Breedlove,III

It is possible, of course, that Cinderella was > adopted into the Cherokee, but somehow I doubt that is why the symbol > is there. It has long been suspected that Thomas Lowry was Cherokee but there has never been any proof. As for the symbol on her grave, it is there because of her husband, not through any ancestry on her line. We know the line from Charles Breedlove down to Cinderella and NONE of them were of Indian extraction. Though the ancestry of Charles Breedlove is not known, he could not himself been of Indian blood as Indians were not permitted to own and sell land in those days as we know Charles did. > A lot of the things I have read, describe Breedlove men with "dark hair and eyes," and Breedloves are listed on the Indian rolls. Also, in Oklahoma, Breedlove is considered to be a Cherokee name. Dark hair and eyes are descriptions of a lot of races, including Germans, Portugese, Welsh, etc, all of which have been alluded as the origin of the Breedlove family. Most, but not all, of the Breedlove's on the Indian rolls come from one branch, that of John Washington Breedlove, son of Simpson, who married Carrie Bruton who was at least 1/4 Cherokee. All of this branch were very influential in the Cherokee community and affairs, holding offices in the tribe and conducting their business, so it is no wonder that Breedlove would be considered a Cherokee name. John Washington Breedlove is not on the rolls as having any Indian blood, only his wife and their children. Have not been able to check the applications of the other Breedlove's on the rolls to see where the Indian ancestry was, but there were quite a few people that tried to claim Indian blood, just to get on the dole. I have identified at least ten other lines of Breedlove's that have branches in Oklahoma, including my own, so I would estimate that the majority of Breedlove's in Oklahoma do NOT come from the one proven line of Cherokee descent. My own 2great-grandmother King was a 2nd generation American, of strictly English ancestry. After her husbands death, she moved to Oklahoma about 1890. Many pictures of her wearing Indian dresses would make her appear to be Indian, but she definitely was NOT. Her clothes were probably bartered from local tribes and she taught school on a reservation so there are all kinds of family legends of her being of Indian blood, but it is just not true. I have baptismal and marriage records from the parishes in Coventry and Lincolnshire, England of both sets of her grandparents, so in fact she was 100% English since both of her parents were full British, even though one was born in North Carolina. This is just an example how legends of this nature get started. In case anyone may think I am prejudiced or racist, I do have another line that I know positively is Indian, but it has taken quite a bit of research to prove. With family living in Texas and Oklahoma and further West before statehood, there have been many of my lines that have claimed some sort of Indian heritage. Old photos are certainly misleading. The one photo on glass that I have of this same 2G-grandmother's husband was always kept in its frame until I got it. The family were strict Congregationalists and no liquor was ever allowed. When I removed the frame of this photo, so I could make copies, I found he had a cider jug in his lap that had been concealed by the frame for over 130 years. Tom King

    3. Tom and list, I have no doubt that BOTH Cinderella Breedlove and Thomas Lowry were of Native American ancestry, specifically, Cherokee, though I have yet to prove it. I know that Cinderella Breedlove and Thomas Lowry were buried with a Cherokee symbol of a weeping willow on each of their tombstones. It is possible, of course, that Cinderella was adopted into the Cherokee, but somehow I doubt that is why the symbol is there. A lot of the things I have read, describe Breedlove men with "dark hair and eyes," and Breedloves are listed on the Indian rolls. Also, in Oklahoma, Breedlove is considered to be a Cherokee name. To me this not so surprising. I am sure that any family in this country that has been here as long as the Breedloves and Lowrys have find some hint of Native American heritage, without being able to prove it. I know that my father's mother, Cinderella's great granddaughter, was obviously of Indian ancestry, as was her mother. The family lore is that her mother was an "Indian woman." Her husband, William Mullicane, was said to have been a "squaw man." While I abhor the term, I use it here to illustrate that the family hid the Indian heritage because they were ashamed of it. Only part of my relatives, when I was growing up, would admit to it, in fact. I also know that I have physical markers that prove I have Native American ancestry. I am light skinned, from my European ancestry, but it is yellow based from my Mongolian heritage. My blood type is b+ (Mongolian). My sister has the looks and the blood type, too. She could probably "pass" for a full blooded Cherokee if she were tan. 2. The date of the marriage of Anderson S. Breedlove and Mary Octavia (McCoy) Breedlove was April 5th, 1884. Andrew Richard went by the name of nickname of Dick. He died April 1, 1953 and is butied in Sheldon Cemetary, Sheldon, Missouri. (I have the "receipt" from Beeny Funeral Home). Arta Luna changed her name to Launa Mary. She died December 10, 1979 and is buried in Odd Fellow Cemetery, St. Joseph, Missouri. Sherman Hosie Breedlove died July 8, 1974. His wifes Obit. (Nellie Jessie Breedlove) lists her place of internment as Canon City, Colorado. I'm sure he was buried there too. I have an interesting article that someone clipped and saved and I put in my book that referres to several Breedlove deaths in a short amount of time. It is dated November 19, (1918) which was about the time of the great flu epidemic around World War I. Anderson and Mary spent quite a few years, and many of their children were born in Stotts City, Mo. The article reads: Webb City, Mo., Nov 19. With the death of Robert Breedlove, 26 years old, which occurred this morning at his home north of the city near the Bertha A mine, the Breedlove family has lost by death the fourth member within a week. Hershal Breedlove, a brother, died Sunday and his body was shipped to Stotts City for burial this morning. A Week ago a brother, Mario Breedlove and the next day a brother-in-law died. All of the deaths were due to infulensa as pneumonia followng influensa. Breedlove is survived by his wife Mrs. Delia Breedlove and his parents. Services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock with burial in Carterville cemetery.

To Bill & Jan-for years I had the book History of the Cherokees by Emmett Starr-last year I sold most of my 30 yr collection of genealogy books-a woman in TX bought that one. It had a nice picture of your ancestor Carrie Bruton Breedlove. >From memory I thought the Spencer of Green Co Mo who was father of John w. Breedlove who married Carrie Bruton was killed in the Civil War..have some info on him in a booklet which isnt available at the moment.. Tom King--Thank you for the info re Naither...his descendant Jewell Breedlove either wrote Nathan in 1970 or I copied it wrong. I checked my Atlas (it is an old one) and cannot find Georgetown, CA listed--and the message did mean that it was James who told them his grmother was Indian. It has never been my opinion that my Breedlove's had Indian blood.Martin Breedlove and Elizabeth Carr were my ancestors. But-I do think my Lowery's were part Indian -have just never been able to find the connection or prove it..In Starr's book there was also a picture of Major George Lowery, he wore an ear ring and had a bandana around his head..lots of interesting things written about him. This information and when and where he was born (NC 1781) came from Jen Herron of the Breedlove list.
