Dear Cousins, I want to thank Mark Arslan for his submission of two King William Co., VA Breedlove records. Transcriptions from original records, are a valuable source to share with other researchers. Mark wanted to know who Clifford Breedlove was--that's a new name to me. Perhaps someone else can help. Mark also wanted to know who William Breedlove was who died in 1801 in King William Co. Well, I don't know for sure, but Charles & Mary Parr Breedlove had a son, William: William m. Millicent. Earliest Breedlove [other than Charles] mentioned in Essex records, 16 May 1738 in Court Orders. He and Millicent witnessed the will of Humphrey Meggs in 1746, Essex Co., VA. No further records. This William was an adult and married in 1738, and therefore probably born at least by 1715, which would make him 85 or 86 if he is the one who died in King William Co. in 1801. It would be interesting to determine the name of the wife of the William Breedlove, who left the will in King William Co. If William & his wife sold land in that county, her name might appear in the record as releasing dower. Charles & Mary Breedlove's son, Allaman, also had a son, William. I don't have any further information about him. Charles & Mary Breedlove had a son, Thomas [my ancestor], who had a son, Madison & a son, William [my ancestor] My William Breedlove died [in 1839] in Kentucky, and is buried there. Marilyn Owen

As the 2000 census gets underway tomorrow I can't help but think back to the thousands of dedicated hard-working enumerators who have braved a lot of elements, hardships, time away from their families, and personal expense to give us the records that we have. We, as genealogists, value the information we can glean from those worn, hand-written documents...those precious pieces of paper that give us a glimpse in the lives of those who have gone before us...of those who through courage, fortitude, patience, and love brought up families to be proud of who they are and from whom they descend. I treasure the little pieces of my family history puzzle that they have provided. Past enumerators have given me information that makes me proud to descend from BREEDLOVEs, CHURCHWELLs, DOWNSes, McFARLANDs, HULSEYs, JOHNSONs, and a host of other families. I look forward to being enumerated in the year 2000 and hope that in the years down the road that my descendants will be proud to find a little bit of me in this document. These thoughts were prompted from the festive evening I just spent at the Frank A. Degnan High School gym in Unalakleet, Alaska. If you have been reading about the census in the paper, you know that the census count starts tomorrow here in Unalakleet. Tonight we had the community kick-off. There were speeches, Eskimo dancing, and a potluck dinner for the community which will be the first in the nation to be counted in the 2000 census. We honored our elders, our veterans, and welcomed Alaska's Lt. Governor. Dignitaries from D.C. and other places were here. Tomorrow one of our elders, Stanton Katchatag, will be the first in the nation to be counted. During the next three days the rest of us will have our turn. Monday in many papers across the nation there was a picture of one of our elders ice fishing along with an article. Emma Ivanoff is my neighbor. I take exception to a few things which were written, but for the most part it was a good article. Tomorrow or Friday Stanton's picture will be in the paper and maybe on television. As you view these things, think of one of your "cousins" way up here, and with me thank and honor the enumerators for the work that they do and the piece of history they record. Hi, I received the following Internet address from another list that I'm on. The address is for the UK Public Record Office, now available online. URL is: http://catalogue.pro.gov.uk/ListInt/default.asp I went to the site to see if I could find a Breedlove. I tried all known spellings. I found none. The only thing I found was a census area called Bradlow. Has anyone actually found a Breedlove in any other country? Has anyone ever followed up the suggestion that the name is German for wolf hunter or something like that? I relate the following incident to illustrate how badly names can be misspelled when passed on orally between two people with different accents from each other. I am new to this area (Central Coast of California) and had to go to a store in a nearby town to pick something up from their catalog department. I called the store to get directions. The woman I talked to told me to take the Stole (Stoll) off-ramp. I didn't ask her to spell it. I figured the spelling couldn't be too different from what I thought I heard her say. When I got to the area, I had six off-ramps to choose from. None were Stole or Stoll or Stoal. But, one was Stowell (where I found the store). Dear Tom King, Slave were enumerated separately on the 1850 & 1860 census enumerations. I would GUESS that the information was gathered on the same day by the same census taker that took the information on the owner and his family. But the information was put on separate forms, so it's always possible that both forms did not survive. It does occur to me that an owner could have slaves in a certain county and state, without actually being a resident of that place. I was interested in your questions about Benjamin Breedlove. Sorry I can't help you with that, but if you find out any answers, please let everyone know. Marilyn Owen

For as long as I can remember, Thomas and Sarah Broadus Breedlove are said to have had a son Benjamin. None of the documents I have found for any of their others siblings ever mention a brother Benjamin. This Benjamin is said to be the one who enlisted in Albemarle Co., VA in 1781 at age 19, dark hair, gray eyes, 5'8" tall. His birth in 1762 matches that of Benjamin Watkins Breedlove, son of Benjamin & Mary Watkins Breedlove, who is known to have fought in the Revolution as he received land in Georgia in 1799, but it was for service in Georgia State Troups. Does anyone have a copy of the service record or any enlistment records for the Benjamin Breedlove who enlisted in Albemarle? Can't find my copies anywhere but I have a notation in my notes that said the record showed his father was Thomas and he had a brother William. The note source got deleted so I am not sure where that came from. On another subject, I have found that a lot of Breedlove's don't show up on the normal census schedules for 1850 and 1860 but are listed on the Slave schedules as owners. Does anyone know why someone would be listed in a county as a slave owner and not listed at all on the normal schedule, not even anywhere in the state or country? For instance, Leonard P. Breedlove is listed in 1850 as owning 8 slaves in Talbot Co., GA., but is not listed on the regular schedule. He is married to Sarah Johnson (1st wife) and has a son Moses age 19, so I would think he would be listed. Was the regular and slave census taken at the same time by the same enumerator?
