Toni Morrison (1931- ) African-American novelist Toni Morrison was born in Ohio to a spiritually oriented family. She attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., and has worked as a senior editor in a major Washington publishing house and as a distinguished professor at various universities. Morrison's richly woven fiction has gained her international acclaim. In compelling, large-spirited novels, she treats the complex identities of black people in a universal manner. In her early work The Bluest Eye (1970), a strong-willed young black girl tells the story of Pecola Breedlove, who survives an abusive father. Pecola believes that her dark eyes have magically become blue, and that they will make her lovable. Morrison has said that she was creating her own sense of identity as a writer through this novel: "I was Pecola, Claudia, everybody."
Marc, I recall in the movie "The Bad Seed" which I think is from about 1966, there was a Fred Breedlove mentioned. I think he was the late husband of the owner of the rented house.
Someone requested that I start an informal list of Breedloves who appear in literature, fiction or non-fiction. I'm happy to, so send any nominees you might have. Already I learned of two characters I didn't know of. Once I have a list going, I'll post it to the list. Cheers, Marc Breedlove ***************************** S. Dear Breedlove listers, Last night I was reading a biograpy of Houdini, when a Herbert O. Breedlove showed up. He was a Chicago spiritualist, pastor of the Mission of Love on Dearborn street, who tried (unsuccessfully) to sue Houdini for libel in 1926. He said Houdini listed his name outside a theater as a "fraudulent" spiritualist, Houdini said Breedlove was not on the list. It's in _Houdini, the untold story_ by Milbourne Christopher (1969) Thomas Y. Crowell Co., New York., pg 226-227. I thought some of Herbert O. Breedlove's descendants might be on this list and would enjoy knowing about this reference. The author doesn't say so, but one interpretation is that Breedlove did not use tricks, which would explain why Houdini was not willing to denounce him (certainly Houdini had no hesitation publicly denouncing other spiritualists as frauds). This got me to thinking about the use of the name "Breedlove" in other books, including fiction. I know a fictional Breedlove appears in Kurt Vonnegut's _Breakfast of Champions_ (a minor bad guy), in Larry McMurtry's _Terms of Endearment_ (a complicated good guy), and Tony Hillerman's _Fallen Man_(a murder victim) (titles approximate, from memory). Do any of you know of other fictional Breedloves? It might be a fun list to compile. Cheers, Marc Breedlove ***************************** S. I redid this because it bounced last time. Sorry. ----- Original Message ----- From: CAROLE L COLQUEHOUN To: BREEDLOVE List Sent: Monday, January 31, 2000 4:46 PM Subject: Thomas Breedlove and Sarah Deeds Dear list, I got onto Ancestry.com again and searched "Spotsylvania, Virginia, County Records, 1721-1800" for Breedlove, Carr, Waller, and Chiles. Since Spotsylvania Co. covered an area that now includes Orange, Madison, Culpeper, and Rappahannock counties, I figured I would find someone. I now know that Waller and Chiles are part of the family. I got too much to type in at one setting. However, for those of you who are not Ancestry.com members, the book is: Crozier, William Armstrong, ed. "Virginia County Records: Spotsylvania County 1721-1800," New York, NY: Fox, Duffield & Co., 1905. Does anyone know what county Breedlove, NC is in? I don't see it on any of my North Carolina atlases, nor does it appear on the USGS database at <http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html>. It must not exist anymore as a town. Ron & Norma Eckard wrote: > My Robt. My Robt. Breedlove was a postmaster at Breedlove, WV in the early 1900s and once wrote to Jim Breedlove, postmaster at Breedlove, NC, regarding genealogy. Does anybody know this Jim Breedlove and his parents and grandparents. Apparently these two were closely related. Thanks... Ron
Leta, Joni Breedlove <jledb@bellatlantic.net> is researching James Fletcher Breedlove b. 1858 of AL/AR; Jan Morris (tried49700@aol.com) also has information on a James Fletcher associated with a family in AR. Martha Kahn <MNBKahn@aol.com> and Georgia Owens <mtogtwn@ibm.net> have ancestor Henry Fletcher Breedlove b. 25 Dec 1841 Hancock Co. GA m. Sarah Elizabeth Peacock. Perhaps there is a connection there. Hope this helps, Tom/Baltimore
Henry is my GGrandfather, he married a woman named Lillie (lilly) Mae McCahn (McHan. They had 10 or 11 children, 1 or 2 of the children were deaf. If anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate it if you pass it along. I know That Henry died here in Arkansas, but I'm not sure of the dates. Thanks for any help, Leta Arnold
My transcription of this will was done from the microfilmed copy of the original in the State Library of Virginia at Richmond. It was not a very clear microfilm copy and the edges were not also legible (hence my use of the ellipses . . .). If someone could find the original Record Book, maybe we could get a definitive reading. It sure looked like Clifford to me. I wonder if it still might be at the courthouse in King William County. (Would that be in the town of King William, the county seat? It sure doesn't look like there is much of a population in that county, by looking at the map.) tomking wrote: > PS My ten year old copy of the other King William Record book is faded > out but it still appears to me that the name is ALLEMAN Breedlove, not > Clifford as Mark had reported. I think we could > all use your assistance here in knowing how you make this particular > attachment. Bill. et al, There are no exact references to any of these relationships but all of the others can be eliminated. 1. William, UNPROVEN son of Charles and Mary, evidently lived all of his life in Essex County. There are quite a few Breedlove's living in Essex in censuses after 1800. His wife Millicent could NOT be an Madison as there are no known Milly's or Millicent's in any of the early Madison families in Virginia according to several noted researcher of that family. 2. Am not sure who Bill means by William, son of Thomas Alleman. The William who is the son of Thomas Alleman by an unknown wife, was married to an Anne and died by 1732. To my knowledge there is only one Thomas Alleman Breedlove, born long after 1800. 3. William, son of Alleman & Susannah, was evidently married to a (Lucy?) Madison. There is a family legend in their daughter Mary Oglevy's line that they were related to President Madison. There are several Lucy and other female Madison's of that period who could be the wife of this William Breedlove. Alleman's will was witnessed by Robert Mann, father of the Joseph Mann who is executor of this William's will. Have not been able to find if this Joseph Mann was the husband of William's daughter Elizabeth, but there are several Mann families in the Henrico area I am working on. William's son Madison may be the Madison Breedlove that I have long suspected did not belong to Thomas and Sarah Broadus Breedlove. There are no documents that show the Madison who married Judith Buckner as being either the son of Thomas and Sarah, or a brother of one of the known proven children. Two Madison daughters married to two Buckner brothers, either of which may be the parents of Judith Buckner. Have never found out the parents for Judith Buckner so this part is yet to be proved. If memory serves me correctly, Judith Buckner was an orphan and her guardian Elizabeth Morgan signed for her to marry Madison Breedlove, which is why some records give Elizabeth as his wife instead of Judith. It would make sense that if Alleman named a son Braxton for his wife Susannah's family, that Alleman's son William could name a son Madison after his wife's family. Madison and Judith had a son James Waller. Waller and Oglevy families are connected to the Madison family, so all of these families seem to be connected to JUST this one branch of the Breedlove family. As I said, there is no positive evidence showing the William who died in King William County is a son of Alleman, but there are no other known William Breedlove's with close ties to the same families. PS My ten year old copy of the other King William Record book is faded out but it still appears to me that the name is ALLEMAN Breedlove, not Clifford as Mark had reported. Haven't seen the printed abstracts so I am not sure where the Clifford came from. Tom King
Tom, YOUR: "Son of Alleman Breedlove and Susannah Braxton (or Daniels or Madison?). Have only been able to trace one of the daughters, Mary Oglevy Breedlove who married John Williamson. Am not sure of Madison. Could be the one who married Elizabeth Morgan in Orange Co, VA on 8 Jan 1784." Could you please provide your source reference or rational for this relationship? I am confused because of the several Williams at this time; William, son of Charles and Mary Parr Breedove, William, son of Thomas Allaman, and William, son of Alleman. I think we could all use your assistance here in knowing how you make this particular attachment. Bill
