First of all, I want to thank Tom King for the file he posted on descendants of Thomas and Sarah (Broaddus) Breedlove. In doing some non-genealogical reading I came across a three to four page sketch of the life of William Thomas Breedlove, born Oct. 8, 1848 in Tallapoosa Co., Alabama. In 1862 he moved with his family to Ouachita Co., Arkansas, and Sept. 1870 he married Mary Frances Rogers. She died in 1909. At the time of his death in 1934 he was living in Tillar, Arkansas, and he was killed in an auto accident between Tillar and Hot Springs. He is buried in Salem Cemetery near the small town of Millville (a town which reportedly no longer exists). William was a minister for Churches of Christ. One of his granddaughters was married to James O Baird, long-time president of Oklahoma Christian University in Edmund, OK. I have no idea how he ties in to the Breedlove line, but posted this in case anyone wants the information. Does anyone have any information on a Jane (Zana)Breedlove who married a James C. Shingleton around 1900 in WV. Probably around the Grafton, WV area. His parents were Abrahan Shingleton and Sarah Ingram Shingleton. Her parents were William and Mary E. Martin Breedlove. I would like to know who the children were and the dates for them. Ancestry.com has for the next few days the Civil War Pension Lists and you can search by name and then go into a new view online feature that shows you actual images of the cards used to register for these pensions which gives you information on Name, Widow's name, unit served in Application numbers and Certificate numbers and then gives you information on how to use that information to obtain the photocopies of the original applications. I looked up both mine and my husband's ancesters and may just have found the missing link I have been searching for for so long. Good luck to all. Beth Porter

Dear Cousins, I have extracted the Amherst Personal Property Lists for Breedlove, for the years 1782-1803. The tax lists continue, and I have ordered the next roll of microfilm. Notice that in 1797 there is a Thomas Breedlove listed in Amherst Co. That year [1797] there was also a Thomas Breedlove listed in Albemarle Co. on the tax list. Martin Breedlove also appears on the Albemarle list before he shows up in Amherst. I sent this extraction to myself, first, to see if the columns came through straight [they didn't]. There are only four headings, though, so perhaps it won't be too confusing. My own Cherokee heritage back to Thomas Chisholm, 3rd Chief, among the Western Cherokees "Old Settlers" in Arkansas and Oklahoma 30 years before the Trail of Tears is documented in a small book now published on line for those interested. "Our Cherokee Heritage" began to link relationship to the Cherokee people but the end result is the only comprehensive genealogical history (as far as I know) of John D. Chisholm, father of Thomas Chisholm and grandfather of Jesse Chisholm. John D. Chisholm was a settler in the Watauga Association in eastern Tennessee, the first democratic and independent American government prior to the Declaration of Independence. DANVILLE, Va. - Lucy Breedlove Bennett, 77, of 15284 Mount Cross Road, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Danville Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 22, 1923 in Pittsylvania County, she was the daughter of Marsellous Breedlove and Cora Tarpley. She was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, Jessie Morrison of Dry Fork; two daughters, Frances Walton of Dry Fork and Rosa Martin of Danville; two brothers, Floyd Breedlove and William E. Tarpley, both of Danville; five sisters, Hope F. Breedlove, Mary White, Mattie Cabell and Bendie Hall, all of Danville and Della Brown of Buffalo, N.Y.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from Bibleway Cathedral with Apostle L.G. Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. A viewing will be held from 4 p.m. Saturday at Cunningham & Hughes Funeral Home. The family will be at the residence.

Dear Tom, Your information that Thomas Breedlove [wife Sarah Broaddus] died c. 1785, surprises me, since, as I say, my information was that he died after 1800. I cannot remember now what my source for that 1800+ death date is, however. It did occur to me that Thomas Sr. & Thomas Jr. might BOTH have appeared on the Albemarle tax lists, but they NEVER appear at the same time, at any rate. I thought it strange that some years Thomas Breedlove was sometimes taxed only for his property and not for himself. This happened in 1790, 1791 & 1792. I interpreted this to mean that this was Thomas Sr., who was being excused from paying taxes because of his advance age or infirmity.Then in 1793 Thomas Breedlove is shown with one male +16 in the house. I interpreted this to mean that there may have been ANOTHER male in the household, of +16, but that it was not necessarily Thomas, himself. In 1794, 1795 & 1796, Thomas is shown with two whites, +16. Once again in 1798 & 1799, Thomas is not charged for himself, but only for his property [no taxable males in the household]. I've extracted the next part of the Albemarle tax list, but haven't typed it up yet. Well, I wondered about that too. I don't know if there was another list, or not. The so-called 1790 Virginia census was taken from tax lists from 1783-1785. I could not read the "B" section of the 1783 list; I did not find any Breedloves on the 1784 list. What I found in 1785, is as listed above. I did not write down how many buildings there were per taxable person, although I do remember that at least one of the early tax lists had that item. The 1782 list for Thomas Breedlove showed: 1 wh. male +21; 1 black; 7 cattle; 2 horses. If you total those, it adds up to eleven. Did someone mis-transcribe the 1785 [which perhaps was actually taken in 1783] listing for Thomas Breedlove [12 whites] & add up, instead, the number of ALL things listed that year? More likely the original showed just 1 white, and perhaps 2 slaves, which got put together as "12" WHY is it when you try to solve one problem, you end up with three MORE?? Marilyn

Dear Cousins, Those of you who descend from Thomas Breedlove & Sarah Broaddus, might be interested in what I learned from the Albemarle Co., VA tax lists, concerning the death of Thomas. Up until now I had only in my notes that he died "after 1800". Thomas appears on the Albemarle Co. tax list through 1805, but not thereafter. It would appear then, that Thomas died between 1805 & 1806. In 1805 he is taxed for 1 white male [+16], 2 slaves and 3 horses. That year [and on other years] Maddison, Cornelius & Nathan Breedlove appear on the Ablemarle tax list. Who is this Nathan Breedlove? The Nathan Breedlove who was the son of Charles, died in 1786, so it is not he. Marilyn Owen

The 1860 census shows a Harriett (or Hannah) 42 KY, Virginia 19 KY and America 11 KY, the first two also there on the 1850 census. Have no proof who these belong to but I assume that the older Hannah was married to a Breedlove and had the two daughters. The husband must have died or left his family behind before 1850. Don't know who this husband could have been unless he was a son of David Watts Breedlove or a slight chance he was a son of Martin. All of the children of Martin, William or David Watts Breedlove have never been identified since their are no estate or probate records for any of them. There is also a David (Decalb) Breedlove age 16 KY living with a Blewitt family and an N.P. Breedlove age 45 KY living with a Green family in Simpson on the 1850 census I cannot identify. Guess the retraction on Craig Breedlove got to the board okay, but it did not come back to me as a message like all of the others I have posted before. Tom King
