I'm still looking for any information on a Martin Breedlove in the northeast GA area or NC. He married a Carrie Elizabeth Welch, a widow with five children. I have no specific dates except listed in 1920 census of Swain Cty., NC with ten children. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Tom, please match me with someone. Alice Gillihan alice6731@aol.com
Gang, Today (July 1), BREEDLOVE-L is starting it's third year on-line! Here are some silly statistics: Current number of subscribers: 93 Messages posted since 7/1/96 (including this one): 520 Subscribed the longest: Patty Rich (since 7/3/96) [we had two others: Erich Mehnert and Bert Smith, but they both dropped off mid-June] Subscribed the shortest: Tom Breedlove <trrdlve@capital.net> subscribed earlier this year, and his e-mail address went bad so fast that the welcome message bounced! Subscribed from farthest away: Gzrenyam <gzrenyam@public1.guangzhou.gd.cn> who subscribed from China, evidently -- stayed on the digest for one week, then unsubbed. Other news: - The updated and re-tweaked welcome message is now available -- new subscribers get it automatically (so if you're seeing this, you can't get it unless you ask for it). The biggest change is the inclusion of the new policy instituted by Rootsweb regarding non-plain text format e-mails and attachments (some folks snuck in between my bulletin and the updated welcome -- so inquire if curious). For folk who have been subscribed for over a year (say, 15 of us), you probably should ask for the new welcome since it's _radically_ different than the bare-bones version issued when we made the switchover from MAISER to RootsWeb. - I mentioned about a year ago (or more) that I would post my "matchmaking" list. This is a list that lists researchers and their e-mails who are in the same line or researching the same people. It'll go out in a day or so. - I'm still looking for subscribers (and non-subscribers) who have personal web pages devoted to their Breedlove research. I have put up a page <http://pages.prodigy.com/VSVE92A/breemail.html> that contains a short list of these. Let me know if yours is missing! here's to good things in the year ahead. Tom [listowner, facilitator guy]

Dear Tom, Love the possible origin of the Breedlove name, but has anyone ever found the name in 17th Century England or Europe? Marilyn
I yanked this off the Broken Arrow Publishing website: ---------------- BREEDLOVE may be a combination of the Old English "brad" = broad, wide + AngloNormanFrench "louve" = she-wolf. The term "louve" was widely used as a flattering nickname for a brave man or warrior, in the context of the fierceness of the she-wolf in protecting her young. Breedlove in that sense would be an English nickname describing the warrior of broad stature. --------------- Tom
Tom, In answer to your question, no, I don't know anything about that family. If they are relatives, I wouldn't know it. Aside from my genealogy research, my family has been out of touch with most living relatives for a long time. I found this is obit. EXTREMELY interesting, though, because my paternal greatgrandfather (supposedly named John B. Calhoun) married a STUMP -- Jane Stump -- in Iowa. That's all I know about it, actually. The reason that I am not sure about his name is because I have not been able to find any record of a John B. Calhoun in Iowa during that time, and there is some doubt in the family that my grandfather was telling the truth about his name. I'll probably never live long enough to clear up that mysterious side of the family. My grandfather was a dark man (in the metaphysical sense). He left Iowa in a hurry, sometime just after the turn of the century (my father was born in 1914), and went to live in the Ozarks of Missouri. The story goes that, in Iowa, he shot three brothers (who were trying to kill him because he had seduced their sister) and then ran for his life. He then married into the line that I am now researching. Carole --[ ORIGINAL MESSAGE ]----------------- Does anybody know who this is? I found it surfing around. Dear Dick: While my name isn't Breedlove, I am a Ross County Breedlove descendant (as well as some of lines from that area). In my database, there are 3 Williams born in Ross - 1823;1837 and 1847. One William had a son James M. who married Jane Galbraith of Pennsylvania 10 Feb. 1845. Their son, William was the one born in 1847! My records end with the 1850 census for the Breedloves of Ross County. Could be that we've found your William! Larry
Hello, everyone. My name is Richard Allen Breedlove. My father's name was Arthur Mack Breedlove. His father was Oather Breedlove. His Father was Allen Breedlove. I just confirmed by way of a civil war army pension file from the National Archives that his father was William Breedlove and his mother was either Eliza or Louisa Galbreath. I had previously seen a record of a William Breedlove marrying a Louisa Galbreath in Effingham County, Illinois on May 31, 1876. There was a copy of that marriage certificate in the pension file. Also in the pension file there is a document which contains a physical description of William which ends by saying that he was born in Ross, Ohio. There is a town by that name in Butler County near Cincinnati there is also a county with that name farther east. I don't know which one they mean. There are also papers which say he died in Effingham, Illinois in 1878. Does anybody know anything about this William Breedlove. Any information you can come up with would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Richard Allen Breedlove
Carol, You mentioned that Breedlove is considered to be Indian on Cherokee lands. On Terri Moore's Native American page, she lists Breedlove as a town. However, I have never inquired about this. It appears that she is retiring from doing lookups. I thought I would mention it anyway. Debby Schmidt drs39@csufresno.edu
Frieda, YOU SAID: I am looking for the Breedlove that may have Indian Blood. Amerson and McDonald are the families I am working with. They are known to be in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. We feel that we are connected with the Breedloves in some way. Some of the Family have Breedlove as their second name. We have a John G Amerson that Married Nancy Breeding in the 1850's They are shown on the 1860 census in Marion, Alabama. They have two young boys one John Breedlove Amerson and Benjamin G Amerson. In 1865 both boys are under the guardianship of Amos Young Amerson brother of John G Amerson and mother Elizabeth McDonald Amerson. Elizabeth is 1/2 Cherokee. The Amersons are known to be in many counties in NORTHERN ALABAMA The Breedloves may also be connected with the Byers and the Baker families in Alabama and Arkansas. Appreciate any help Frieda Glenn Bennett FJGB@aol.com =========================== I actually have more questions than answers. I have an ancestor, Cindarilla (Sindarilla/Cinderella) Breedlove who married Thomas Lowry. Her father was Martin Breedlove. Ellen Byrne, another member of the list, and I are distant cousins and share this same ancestor and has found no evidence of native American heritage. However, one of Cindarilla's children, Sarah Lowry, married a fellow by the name of Mullicane, and the family lore goes that "the Mullicane married an Indian woman." So, either Thomas was Indian or Cindarilla was Indian (or both were). We recently ran across some evidence that is pointing to Thomas possibly being part Cherokee (a Scottish trader named Lowry is a possible candidate for his father). However, would Cindarilla have married an Indian unless she had Indian blood herself? There is also the fact that on Cherokee lands, the name Breedlove is considered to be Indian (a native American from Tehachapi told me that). Sorry that I can't be of more help. Carole
Hi Frieda: I am interested in your Breedlove's from Arkansas. I have a gg grandfather Irvin Eldridge Breedlove from NC who came to Ar in the early 1850's. I do not know who his parents or siblings are. I have several pieces of good info that he was born in Warren Co. NC. Thanks, Juanita

Gang, I've just received a dispatch from Rootsweb describing a recent change they have made. They have created a program that will filter out certain kinds of messages sent to the mailing list. From now on, the following types of messages will automatically be filtered out: 1. Messages with non-text attachments (i.e. graphics) 2. Messages which are MIME encoded (i.e. a zillion lines of unintelligible junk like this ==> URJALIGJIAE;2XLKCXUFALKMCXOICLKXLKD;IEJX,CMOVIJAKDSFJ) 3. Messages with HTML tags (I had an example to show you but I realized this very message would be rejected if it were put in!). These messages usually appear fine until you get to the end, then you see all the HTML tags and a repeat of the message. This is because the sender has set their mailer to HTML standard rather than PLAIN TEXT standard. What will happen when these three kinds of messages are received by the mailing list is that they will bounce to me as an error, and a notice will be sent to the sender. It will be up to the sender to send clean, plain text messages to the mailing list. I realize that some subscribers might not be able to figure out how to send plain text rather than HTML coded mail messages, and we'll deal with these on a case-by case basis. We have over 90 subscribers, but fortunately we don't have too much of a problem with messages not adhering to the plain text requirements. Unfortunately this is something I cannot control and I apologize in advance for any confusion or frustration this may cause -- we'll make the best of it. This policy is being applied to all mailing lists (all umpty-jillion of them) run out of Rootsweb. In the case of graphics, if you would like to send out a graphic, send a note informing the list of your desires and then send it out directly to subscribers who want it (not via the mailing list). Contact me privately for feedback, etc. thanks for your patience! Tom your listowner and facilitator guy. [BREEDLOVE-L] & [EASLEY-L]

I am sure the messa Marilyn Owen sent re witnesses signatures was correct. I have done genealogy for 30 yrs-and I have corresponded with Marilyn for 20 yrs-she is one of the most organized genealogists I know-certainly more than me. Another one was Olive Breedlove Smith, decd, I told her I thought my Lowery's were part Indian and perhaps the Breedlove's were too-she lived in FL but she asked to exchange snapshots which we did- she said- see you have blue eyes, brown hair- we look alike. Cant remember what I did with her picture. I have 3 gr ch with beautiful brown eyes. Anyway none of us have ever been able to prove the Native American blood in our particular Lowery branch..there were many and some even Laclede Co. Mo. but we are still working on it. Ellen Byrne

Dear Breedlove Researchers, I agree with the information that Tom Jones forwarded, concerning there being no pattern or rule, for the gathering of the names of witnesses to deed. Sometimes the witnesses were neighbors; sometimes the witnesses were relatives; sometimes the witnesses just "happened by" conveniently at the court house when a signature was needed. Since beginning to do genealogical research twenty years ago, I have literally read hundreds of deeds. I always notice the names of the witnesses, to see if I can learn anything additionally about the the Grantor/Grantee. If relatives witnessed, it was usually because they were also neighbors and happened to be convenient. Marilyn Owen
