As some of you know, Hope Pery Breedlove published a "BREEDLOVE GENEALOGICAL HISTORY" of some 346 pages back in 1965, of which I had an original copy (one of 200 copies made). After loaning it to a cousin, I never saw it again, so I copied the entire book from the LDS film, which now included a 31 page index added by Olive Breedlove Smith. During my correspondence with him, he had indicated he was still updating the material. Just recently I had learned that he had made four copies of a revised work for his children. A copy of this revised work was given me by Caroline Faison that her mother had obtained from Hope. Just now got home with it and the pages are numbered to pg 635, but there are a great many a, b, c, etc pages so I estimate it to be well over 800 pages. Unfortuneately there is no index but the table of contents reads in part Your Family History pg 1 Virginia Breedloves 13 Breedloves in Revolution 51 West Virginia Breedloves 58 North Carolina Breedloves 66 Tennessee Breedloves 78 Kentucky Breedloves 83 Ohio Breedloves 107 Indiana Breedloves 127 Illinois Breedloves 192 Missouri Breedloves 197 South Carolina Breedloves 239 Georgia Breedloves 246 Alabama Breedloves 403 Mississippi Breedloves 405 Louisiana Breedloves 409 Arkansas Breedloves 430 Oklahoma Breedloves 434 Texas Breedloves 452 Misc Breedloves in U.S. 465 Richard Foster & Sarah Wayne Breedlove 470 James Foster Breedlove 542 Jordon, Moon, Reid & Lyle Families sup 1 pgs 1-59 John Adams of Walton Co. GA sup 2 pgs 1-39 Like the original book, this was done on onion skin paper, which was common in those days for typing many copies at a time with sheets of carbon paper in between. Some of the pages have light faded areas but at first glance I could make out almost everything. The pages were copied one at a time since many had items stapled or pasted to them, so the set I have represents probably the best copy available. I want to make this book available to anyone that wants a copy from my copy. Cost will be 5 cents per page plus postage. My cost is a little over 4 cents per page so if there is any profit it will pay to have extra copies made to send to the LDS Library in Salt Lake and to the Georgia Archives. I estimate the total price with postage to be less than $50, though I can't say for sure until I actually count all of the pages and take a package to the post office to get the rates for 1st class or book rate shipping. Once I get the actual counts and prices in the next few days, I will send another message letting everyone know the exact cost. So anyone who is interested in the best and as far as I know, only book devoted solely to the Breedlove family, please let me know. Tom King
Tom-thank you for adding my name to the list under my ancestor Martin BREEDLOVE. I have a new address from the one you used-to get another phone line had to change servers- the correct one is: dande@tds.net you have been talking about origins-once heard they came from Wales, another person said Germany, someone said it had something to do with the name wolf-Happy 4th of July to everyone-today Dan and I have our 56th anniversary- we feel lucky-told our kids if we are both still standing our feet on the 60th- we want another party. Joni, Can you tell me where the Historical Research Center in England is located? I am interested to pursuing further the information you sent gathered there on the Breedlove name. This is the most exciting information that I have seen yet on our origins. I could possibly go to Lincoln to do some research at the county or parish level. Also when did you do this? Recently? Still looking for someone who may have information about William Breedlove who married Rebecca Goff on June 29, 1882 in Pike County, Kentucky. He was 18 when they married, but he didn't stay with her to raise their 3 children. Possibly could have another family. He was from Russell County, Virginia. I have a copy of the marriage certificate. His father was Madison Breedlove. TBPHD1@aol.com Teresa

Gang, Below is something Joni sent me for comment -- she obtained it in England. It's another take on the origin of the surname "Breedlove". The Historical Research Center FAMILY NAME HISTORY BREEDLOVE The English surname Breedlove is classified as being a habitation name. Habitation names are those family names which are derived from either the location of the place of residence of the initial bearer or from the name of the town or willage from whence he hailed. In some instances, a habitation names refers to a residence which was distinguished by a sign or engraving usually displayed over the door. In this instance, the surname Breedlove originally referred to a person who lived by a large hill. The etymology of this name lies in the combination of the old English terms, "brad" and "hlaw" meaning broad hill. This surname may also be derived from one of the two place names called Brodley, located in Lancashire and Essex. Variants of the surname Breedlove include Broadlove and Broadley. One of the earliest references to this name or to a variant is a record of one Samuel Breedlove, son of James Breedlove and his wife, Ann, who was baptized on the 25th of July, 1731 in Scopwick (Lincoln). However research is of course ongoing and this name may have been documented even earlier than the date indicated above. The modern spelling of most English surnames is comparatively recent and is usually a phonetic rendering of the name which is found in parish registers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. However, it should be noted that the name itself, in its various orthographic forms, may have been borne by the same family for a previous three or four hundred years. Notable bearers of this surname include John Breedlove of the Virginia Line, who fought in the American Revolutionary War. A military record also mentions his brother, Martin Breedlove, who was aged 62 in 1833. BLAZON OF ARMS: Argent, on a chevron gules, a two eagle's heads erased in chief of the last and an anchor in base azure, three bezants all within a bordure of the third. CREST: A stag's head erased proper. MOTTO: Non immemor beneficii/ ORIGIN: England

Hi, I also am a descendent of William Breedlove, son of Thomas & Sarah, through their daughter Sally B. I really disagree with that "B" in the middle of our William's name. >From all I've been able to determine, William B Breedlove was a different man. Our William, and [another] William B. Breedlove, were both on a list of soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War, but they were two different people. None of my records show my William signing with the middle initial "B". I have his actual signiture on his pension papers and on the marriage bond he signed for my 2nd great grandparents, Joel Appling & Sally B. Breedlove. Unfortuantely the "B" ended up on the military marker recently placed on William's grave in Simpson Co., KY, but the person who arranged for that marker was working from incorrect information. Now that "B" us cast in marble [instead of concrete], and all who view William's grave will assume that he used the middle initial "B". Please, if anyone has different proof as to how William signed his name, I'd appreciate knowing it. Thanks Marilyn Owen

Marilyn, - I had an old correspondent (I think it was either David Rudge or Erich Mehnert) tell me once that he thought Breedlove was a variation of "Breedlaugh" which is a surname found in the Lake District of England. - Olive Breedlove Smith (I think) said in her writings that she couldn't find a country of origin for the surname. I think there's been a short discussion on the mailing list, but I don't think anything conclusive is known about it's origin. Gang, Please use jonestom@versar.com (business) or vsve92a@prodigy.com (home) if you want to send a private response about this note. thanks! :-) Below is an informal list I've generated which sorts researchers into groups according to the common ancestor they are researching. To keep things simple, I haven't listed anybody as researching Charlie of Essex (md. Mary Parr), or their children Thomas Breedlove (md. Sarah Broaddus) and James Breedlove (md. Lucrecy). Everybody who's listed is grouped by children (or apparent children) of Thomas and James; or, relegated to the big OTHER category. OK, I've probably complicated things by saying all that. I'm certain I've made mistakes, so if your name is under the wrong family, I've left you out (and you know you belong on the list), or I've gotten something else wrong, let me know. Tom King, Linda, and Carole, especially, I need your feedback on this. Everybody chip in their 2 cents. Dates and places listed are rough guides only. I've only listed families that have at least two people researching them (with the exception of Erich's Cornelius B. family, which falls under Thomas B.'s group). This list contains current subscribers, former subscribers, and others I've grabbed from elsewhere on the internet. Some of the addresses are BAD, and I've not been able to obtain updated contact e-mails. A couple entries are marked "(info only)" which simply means the researcher has supplied information on a particular line, but I haven't been able to determine who exactly they are researching (or they're researching some line other than Breedlove). ========================== MATCHMAKING LIST 7/1/98 ------------------------------------------ THOMAS BREEDLOVE b. 1738 ESSEX, VA, d. 1800 md.
