    1. Breedloves of Greene Co, MO on 1850 Census
    2. Bill & Jan Breedlove
    3. Tom, Please help me. If Francis and Nancy Ramey are Rebecca Wilkenson and Jacob Ramey's children, then, according to the 1850 Greene Co, Mo census, they would have to be Ramey's children, not Rebecca Wilkenson's. Also, Rebecca is listed as a NC birthplace. Rebecca (age 27) could not have been the birth mother of Francis and Nancy Ramey prior to having Emarillis and Nancy (about the same age) by John Breedlove. OR, are you saying Emarillis, Nancy, Charles W., and Ransom D are John's by a previous marriage? If so, by whom? If we believe the 1850 census about John and Rebecca, they/he could have been in NC as late as 1839 since their children are all born in MO. Interestingly, the note by John Breedlove for the care of Eliza is dated 1837, which may be about the time John moved from NC to MO. This would fit your Rebecca Wilkenson/Jacob Ramey marriage of Sep 20, 1838. Back to Rutherford Co, NC: Charles Breedlove exercised warrants for 600 acres of land in Rutherford Co, NC as follows: Mar 13, 1786 300 acres survedy with Lemuel and Joseph Moore as chainbearers. Mar 23, 1790 200 acres surveyed with James Breedlove as one of the chainbearers Oct 20, 1797 100 acres surveyed with James Breedlove as one of the chainbearers. Estimating James was about 12 +/- 2 yrs in 1790, his birth would be about 1778. This would be consistent with his marriage to Nancy Simmons in 1800. I fitted the Greene Co, MO (1850 census) Breedloves which might be children of James Breedlove of Rutherford Co, NC to your 1820 NC census with the following results: three males under 10 John(age 7), perhaps another James(Jr) one male 10-16 Spencer(age 12) one male 16-26 Charles(age 18 if born about 1802). This is the Charles who died in Greene Co, MO in 1852 obviously related to John and Spencer in providing support for Eliza. one female under 10 Eliza(age 5) I realize this fit in NECESSARY, but NOT SUFFICIENT I also think it is logical to expect James Breedlove to be very proud of his father Charles and uncle Spencer(deceased) who both served in the Revolutionary War that he might name his own sons after them. For me, the records of NC, AL, MO support this scenario until more factual information proves otherwise. All of this I hope to test against NC probate records during my spring 1999 trip to NC. 2. Tom, There is no hurry with the book, but you have had your share of difficulties. I hope your son is doing well. What an awful story. We have a friend on the Board of Baylor Medical School. In August my husband and I are spending four days at his ranch. Do you mind if I show him your letter? I'd like to know what he thinks about this. It is serious business. My son who is a trained paramedic says it is illegal to be refused emergency medical care. Secondly, I have a cousin-in-law who is the chief legal counsel for Netscape and I would like to send her your letter about Windows 98. This is one of the issues at the core of the Justice Department suit against Microsoft. Would you mind if I gave it to her and to my son who is with a PR firm that deals with high tech companies? Thirdly, I am coming to Houston on Monday, August 3rd and will leave on the 6th. Would you be interested in meeting me at the Clayton Library any time during that period? I am meeting my two sisters in Houston. We hope to recover some of our grandparents possessions from an adopted cousin. I am hoping to get some photos or papers of genealogical importance as well as a few other belongings. This may seem an odd request, but you have been so helpful, I thought it might be nice to know with whom we are corresponding. Martha Breedlove Kahn

    1. Breedloves of Greene Co, MO on 1850 Census
    2. Bill & Jan Breedlove
    3. Tom, Regarding your doubts about Simpson Breedlove: The 1860 TX census lists Simpson from AL. In his Civil War records deposition, he claims Lawrence Co, AL as his birth place. I find no other explanation, whether he was born in TN, or in AL as the best source records indicate, one still has to evaluate Charles' will reference to "Patsey; son Simpson", and the fact that Patsy married David G. Scroggins in 1821 and raised Simpson in TN. The 1850 Greene Co, MO census I checked gives Simpson's birthplace as MO, but that is incorrect. Also, Sarah Hicks is listed from MO on that same cencus, and she is definitely from TN. Simpson is the son of Patsy; father unknown. His place of birth is almost academic. I think the records are sufficient for this conclusion. As for Simpson's second family, your best contact is Mrs. Barbara Breedlove Rollins of Abilene, TX, who descends from Simpson's second wife. Regarding your doubts about Spencer Breedlove: At the death of Charles Breedlove on May 03, 1852, (this Charles is not on the 1850 Census), Spencer and John are purchasers of much of his inventory. A note is included in the probate which names John as principal for $1000 in support of Eliza Breedlove (insane Person), Spencer and Charles co-signers. Note is dated Sep 06, 1837 and references "money and property received by him (John) as curator of foresaid in the State of North Carolina." Greene Co Probate Records, File 476, Box 112. Close family members such as brothers co-sign notes and take care of sisters. Eliza, age 35, is listed in John Breedlove's household on the 1850 Greene Co census. Later, Dec 12, 1856, a James Breedlove is principal with John Breedlove and Benjamin Potter securities for $500 support for Eliza, and insane person. Greene Co. Probate Misc Records, File #385. Packet is labled "Breedlove heirs". I am not sure who this James is, unless a brother of Charles, Spencer, John, and Eliza, OR the son of uncle William as other records imply. Now you may realize why I need NC data on James Breedlove and Nancy Simmons, or some other Breedlove parentage. The records and the relationships they imply connect Spencer more with John, Charles, and Eliza than with William Sr and family with whom he grew up in AL and TN. I think the scenario I have presented is the best deduction form the AL and MO records and their total context. I will be glad to consider any other documented information. The big question you may want to consider is why Spencer is mentioned in Charles' will in Lawrence Co, AL if not the son of James in NC. He is not a son or heir of Charles. And, Spencer is not a son of William Sr who died in Webster Co, MO Oct 19, 1858. (Webster Co, MO Probate File #1723.) Bill Breedlove

    1. Breedloves of Greene Co, MO on 1850 Census
    2. Bill & Jan Breedlove
    3. To understand these particular Breedloves I have to begin back in Lawrence Co, AL to pick up an indenture of Charles Breedlove (wife Sally Fletcher) resulting from the probate of his estate. I account for this Charles Breedlove in Rutherford Co, NC 1785-1803, Knox Co, TN 1806-1817, and in Lawrence Co, AL until he died in 1820. The heirs listed in this indenture are: Son, JAMES. Married Nancy Simmons 10-13-1800. Dau, CATHERINE. Married William Haskew 2-29-1796. Dau, SALLY. Married Francis Ellis. (or Elliott) Son, WILLIAM. Married Amy Hair (or Hairston) Dau, POLLY. Married William Hamilton. Dau, PATSY. Married David Scroggins on April 21, 1821. Dau, NANCY. Married Hance Hamilton. Charles' very cryptic will dated July 27, 1818 in Lawrence Co, AL provides the only clue as to the parentage of Simpson Breedlove. The will in mentioning "Patsy's son Simpson" suggests that Simpson is an illegitimate son (born in 1817). Patsy in turn marries a David G. Scroggins on April 21, 1821. Charles' will also mentions the name Spencer, but does not identify any relationship. Spencer is believed to be a grandson of Charles, probably the son James who remained in North Carolina. Spencer is definitely not a son of Charles since he is not named in the probate settlement 1823 indenture payment to heirs in Lawrence Co, AL. Charles Breedlove had two sons, James the older who remained in Rutherford Co, NC, and William, who after his father Charles died in Lawrence Co, AL, moved to Roane Co, TN with his wife and first son William, Jr, born in 1819. The U.S. Census of 1830 shows both William Breedlove, Sr and David G. Scroggins in Roane Co, TN. In the William Breedlove, Sr household is a male 20-30, believed to be Spencer Breedlove. In the David G. Scroggins' household is a male 10-15, believed to be Simpson Breedlove. In the U.S. Census of 1840 in Roane Co, TN Spencer Breedlove is also now separately listed with a wife and a female 0-5. The 1850 U.S. Census in Greene Co, MO reflects the Breedloves having lived in Tennessee during these early times with the following also born in Tennessee: Simpson's wife, Sarah Hicks Spencer's wife, Sally William Breedlove, Sr's sons, James (and wife Cynthia), Columbus, Charles (and wife Amelia) and William Jr's wife, Susan. The 1850 U.S. Census also shows William Breedlove, Jr's birth in Alabama in 1819 and his wife Susan from Tennessee. (The 1830 U.S. Census in Roane Co, TN fails to account for William Jr, however.) The records in Greene and Webster Co, MO show some very definite patterns. Webster Co was formed from the eastern part of Greene Co in 1855, but is not a strong consideration in identifying the various Breedloves. Court records reveal the most about the relationships. All of the Breedloves on the 1850 census essentially came from Alabama via Tennessee to Greene Co, MO except for John Breedlove from North Carolina. William Breedlove, Sr and his sons (William, Jr, Charles, James, and Columbus) are obviously related through their Tennessee migration and a few other records. Simpson Breedlove has no interaction in the records with any of the other Breedloves in Greene or Webster counties. Spencer, though, coming with William, Sr via Alabama and Tennessee, but born in North Carolina, has numerous court record relationships with John Breedlove from North Carolina, as well as another Charles Breedlove (not on the 1850 Census but who dies in Greene Co in 1852), and a James Breedlove. Spencer, maybe the oldest, Charles, and John are all very much involved together signing notes for the care of a handicapped or insane sister named Eliza who lives with John on the 1850 census. It is this Spencer, Charles, John, and Eliza (and possibly another James) who must be the children of Charles and Sally Fletcher's oldest son James in Rutherford Co, NC. There always seems to be too many James Breedloves. I have concluded that the James Breedlove on the 1850 U.S. Census in Greene Co, MO, who is married to a Cynthia Pursley with three Pursley children and widow of N. A. (Addison) Pursley, is the son of William Breedlove, Sr. This Cynthia also seems to have been a Cynthia Caroline Dillard as identified by Linda Breedlove Taylor from Welling, OK in her compiled genealogy. She identifies this Cynthia Caroline Dillard as marrying James (Monroe) Breedlove, the son of William Breedlove and Amy Hair. (Please note that I have accepted the Webster Co, MO cemetery marker identifying Amy, not Anna, as the wife of this William Breedlove, Sr ,deceased in 1858.) In the probate of Charles Breedlove who died in 1852, I find an R. A. Dillard and a James Breedlove both owing money to this Charles. In a May 1857 Green Co, MO court record, a Robert Dillard, guardian of the heirs of N. A. Pursley, deceased, was ordered to pay James Breedlove for support of minors. These Dillard relationships seem compelling in identifying James (Monroe) Breedlove. On the 1870 cencus James now has 8 children with Cynthia (Dillard) Pursley. Simpson Breedlove moved with his family to Texas by 1860 where he is found on the census in Johnson Co. He moved to Washington Co, AR and enlisted in the Confederate Army on Feb 20, 1862. Spending most of his time in a hospital in Meridian, MS and as a prisoner of war, Simpson was discharged in July 1863. His family in Arkansas by all subsequent account believed that Simpson was killed in the war. Instead, Simpson apparently abandoned his family with Sarah Hicks and took up with Emaline Hodges and had a whole new family, many of whom now live in east Texas. Barbara Breedlove Rollins of Abilene, TX, a descendant of Simpson and Emaline, is largely responsible for my information of Simpson's second family. This is a summary of my findings. I can make specific reference to individual court records or provide copies to anyone interested. Also Tom, you mentioned that Spencer, if a son of James Breedlove of Rutherford Co, NC, apparently married a first cousin, Sarah (dau of Francis Ellis and Sally Breedlove). I believe this is very possible and actually supports my conclusion that Spencer was living with his grandfather Charles when he died in Lawrence Co, AL, and that he lived with his uncle William in Roane Co. TN until he married. By chance are you able to account for Francis Ellis and Sally Breedlove in Roane Co, TN during this period??? Bill Breedlove

    1. Hope Perry Breedlove book

    3. To all that have made inquiries about obtaining copies of the revised edition of Hope's book, I have had a few computer and personal problems that will delay getting copies made for another week or two. Have been having all kinds of computer problems since I installed WIndows 98 which somehow seem related to my internet service providers connection. I can make a connection to my local ISP but it will not recognize any DNS address for any web site, not even my ISP home page which includes email and newsgroups. This ISP uses a Netscape interface though it seemed to work okay when I first tried the Internet Explorer that installed with WIN 98. Win 98 will not let you remove IE so all you can do is remove it from the desktop. When I do make a good connection, it is only at 28K baud, half what it should be, and many website pages seem to take forever now to come up, even at half the speed I had before. What is really strange is that I do not have this problem with another machine that is WIN 95 with IE completely deleted. I suspect Microsoft has done something with IE in the WIN 98 edition that conflicts with the way Netscape operates, as I have never experienced this problem with any of the other versions or NT. On the personal front, my son was hit while crossing the street by a hit and run driver early Sunday morning. He was hit in the leg and rolled across the street. After being released from the emergency room he spent two days in bed while I tried to get him into a hospital, but was denied admisssion because of lack of insurance. Even though I have the money to put up a cash deposit, none of the local for profit hospitals would take him in. Seems as though they would rather do a lot of unneccessary procedures and rip off the insurance companies than take a cash paying customer. Anyhow, after waiting for ten hours to be seen at the local county hospital, he was admitted and will be operated on either tonight or in the next 5 days, to reset the leg and to put in a plate and a few pins. He's 26 BTW, and should pull through just fine, but it's all added a few more grey hairs to my head. I got a 2nd opinion to be sure the procedure is required and found that the orthopedic surgeon is one of the top rated in the area, which alleaves some of my worries. To top it all, his car died at the hospital, as an electrical problem keeps cutting it off after it is started, so it had to be towed back to the shop a block from the house. When it rains, it pours, which by chance it did pour down rain here yesterday for the first time in months with 30-40% chance of rain for the next few days though the temperature is still expected to be over 100. Will still be getting my email but just not as often as I can only get on a few times a day rather than every hour or two. Tom King

    3. Dear Cousins, I am taking a "leave of absence" from all my surname lists for a month or so for several reasons: 1. My computer, hit by lightning two weeks ago, is still not functioning properly and I have a terrible time getting my mail through my husband's 2. Because of a lot of email problems with our current server, we will shortly be changing to another, probably one of the larger ones like AT&T or Sprint (any suggestions, write me personally - we welcome any input on how satisfied or dissatisfied you are if you currently belong to one of the larger links) 3. Vacations and weekends away are making it difficult to keep up with the heavy volume of email and, finally, 4. I need a period of time here to catch up on a humongous pile of unread periodicals and for inputting long backlogged material into my genealogy database. I hope to rejoin the group at the end of the summer, as soon as I can get my act together. Meanwhile, please do not hesitate to contact me personally if I can help or anyone has a question that they feel I might be able to assist with. Continue to use my present address (linda.banwarth@usa.net) - I will contact Tom with my new address when I get it. I will miss you all - hope to be back soon! Linda B. Higganum, CT

    1. Breedlove - Watkins - Herndon Connections
    2. There is a book entitled The HERNDON - HUNT and ALLIED FAMILIES by Edna Hilliard White Wood and Lillie Booth Nesbitt printed in 1930 by Bynum Printing Company - Raleigh. I found it at my library, copied a few pages in it, did not copy the index. Also there is a series on The HERNDON FAMILY OF VIRGINIA by John Goodwin Herndon, Ph. D. I copied a few pages from Volume One : The First Three Generations. You might find information on your Herndon in one of those books. As best I can figure it out, Edward Herndon b. 1678 in New Kent Cty, VA married Mary Waller and had several children, one of these, Martha b. about 1710 m. William Watkins they had 11 children according to the book by John G. Herndon. Elizabeth b. 1746 m John Breedlove, Mary b. 1741 m. Benjamin Breedlove. This is all the info that I have on the Herndon - Breedlove - Watkins connection at present. Linda S.

    3. HI TOM: I desc. from STEMBRIDGE's who marr. into the BREEDLOVE line, late 1800s, GA. That's my interest in Breedlove ... I imagine I have many BREEDLOVE/STEMBRIDGE cousins out there that I'd love to make contact with and share their Stembridge history with them! If possible, could you possibly check the GA BREEDLOVE chapter and see if there is any mention of mine??? All I know: FRANK BREEDLOVE (perhaps of Dawson GA (Coffee Co?) m. ANNIE VERNELIA STEMBRIDGE (PROB. very late 1800s). They res. 1900 Census in BIBB CO., MACON; all o f Annie's younger brothers and sisters, including her youngest sister, Katie Stembridge, age 3, res. with Annie and Frank Breedlove. Suspect her mother died, and father took off, or worked elsewhere ???? Anyway, Id be veryinterested in this family, if you see them anywhere. (Believe Frank and Annie's young daughter may have been named LAURA....) Thanks much..... Hope I'm not asking too much..... 3. Gerry- My computer has been down - off and on - for several weeks. You may have had replies to your 20 June "Conflicts", but these are records I have: John Breedlove married Nancy Parker. They lived in Montgomery County, Alabama. John's will, Book 2, page 92, Wills, Montogomery County Alabama. Children listed married Alabama. Bledsoes were an Alabama family. Daughter Sarah H.(Hatley) was named for Nancy's mother; Lewis P.(Parker) named for her father. If not too late, hope it helps. Have more on Parkers. Betty
