    1. [BRAY-L] BRAY, James, John and Ann-1789-Philadelphia, PA./Monmouth Co., NJ.
    2. This possibly should have been listed under books, but since these names were given, we'll go with them. I just discovered in our library an interesting two volume set called EDWARDS' MATERIALS, which is Rev. Morgan Edwards' notes on the early history of baptists(and I use the uncapitaized form because it deals with all early believers in emersion who were off-shoots of the Anglican Church in America.) The first volume deals with Pennsylvania, then the second volume progresses to MD, VA, NC, SC, and GA. Interesting reading for lots of surnames among the members, but of note to us was a member named Ann BRAY among the Philadelphians, and reference to a "meetinghouse called BRAY'S about 6 miles from Middletown, in Monmouth Co., about 79 miles ENE from Philadelphia".(If you check a map, this is present-day New Jersey.) It was built in 1705 on ground given by John BRAY,---Obediah HOLMES and Jonothan HOLMES. In 1711 John BRAY preached there, although he was not ordained. In 1748, John and James BRAY helped organize a church at Kingwood, which had originally been know as Bethlehem, in Hunterdon Co., about 43 miles N by E from Philadelphia.(Also NJ.) I thought it was interesting, hope it is of use. Nancy Bray Cooper Corpus Christi, TX. [email protected]
