Nancy, You might find some information in THE BRAYS OF FISHER RIVER by Edna B. Reece. She wrote two volumes. In the 1800 NC census, there is a Bryant (Buant) Bray. I don't know if he could be James's ancestor. You can probably get these books at a FHC of the Mormon Church. Most of these early Brays came from England to Maryland or Virginia. They then began to spread out westward through SC, NC and then on to KY and IN. Where were your Brays born? I suspect there is a connection back to the NC Brays, and there were several families of NC Brays. Edna B. Reece's books are difficult to follow. They might give you an idea of where to start looking. I believe you will do just as well to go back to the 1850 census and try to learn who your James's father is. I have both books and I am unable to find anything for sure that connects your family. If you can learn who James's dad is, I might find something to connect him.
