Here's some additional information to throw into the pot of the recent discussion of the various Henry's and Edwards. The only extant copy of the 1790 Chatham County census was copied from the original in alphabetic order. Hence, it is not possible to draw any conclusions about who was living close to whom. There are supposed to be five columns of data for the 1790 census: 1) number of free white males age 16 or older, 2) number of free white males less than 16 years old, 3) number of free white females, 4) number of other free persons, and 5) number of slaves. In Chatham County, the enumerator added a sixth column which is simply the sum of the other five columns. I have annotated the entries with my best guesses as to everybody was. Further discussion of the two Edwards will follow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- p.210, Edward Bray Sr. 322007 males >= 16 bef. 1774 3 Edward Bray Sr. males < 16 1775-1790 2 females 2 other free 0 slaves 0 total 7 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- p.210, Edward Bray Jr. 102003 males >= 16 bef. 1774 1 Edward Bray Jr. males < 16 1775-1790 0 females 2 other free 0 slaves 0 total 3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- p.220, Henry Bray 102003 males >= 16 bef. 1774 1 Henry Bray Jr. males < 16 1775-1790 0 females 2 Sarah Yokley other free 0 slaves 0 total 3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- p.220, Mathias Bray 132006 males >= 16 bef. 1774 1 Mathias Josiah Bray males < 16 1775-1790 3 females 2 Isabella Edwards other free 0 slaves 0 total 6 Mathias Josiah Bray was the son of Henry Bray Jr. and Sarah Yokley. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- p.220, James Bray 112004 males >= 16 bef. 1774 1 James Bray males < 16 1775-1790 1 Henry Bray females 2 Anne Welch other free 0 slaves 0 total 4 James Bray was the son of Henry Bray Jr. and Sarah Yokley. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- p.220, Wm. Bray was the son of Henry Bray Jr. and Sarah Yokley. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's natural to jump to the conclusion that Edward Sr. and Edward Jr. were Edward who married Sarah Maynard and their son Edward who married Nancy Anna Dowdy. The trouble with that conclusion is that Edward who married Sarah Maynard died in 1760. I wonder if Edward Sr. and Edward Jr. were really father and son. Sometimes in old records when there were two people with the same name, the elder one was called Sr. and the younger one was called Jr. (e.g., Edward the elder and Edward the younger) irrespective of family relationships. I even have records of an Elizabeth Bryan Sr. and an Elizabeth Bryan Jr. in my Bryan records. So I don't know who the two Edwards were. Jerry Bryan (P.S., Elizabeth Bryan Sr. and Jr. were sisters, the elder one being the daughter of Allen S. Bryan Sr. and his first wife Elizabeth Hubbard and the younger one being the daughter of Allen S. Bryan Sr. and his second wife Elizabeth McSpadden. To make matters worse, Allens S. Bryan Jr. married Elizabeth Underwood -- far to many Elizabeth's in that family! The Sr. and Jr. notation for the sisters Elizabeth appeared in the Allen S. Bryan Sr. family bible.) _________________________________________________________________ Make your home warm and cozy this winter with tips from MSN House & Home. http://special.msn.com/home/warmhome.armx
Let's make this even more complicated. Below is a listing of Henry and Edward Brays and their passages and events as they relate to the American Colonies: 1652, 10 Oct., Bray, Henry, Lancaster Co., VA, Passage paid of Henry Bray by Elias Edmonds., Cavaliers and Pioneers of VA 1623-1666 1664, July, Bray, Edward, Accomack Co., VA, Indentured servant(?), Abstract of VA Land Patents and Grants 1623-1666 1666, 14 May, Bray, Edward, Surry Co., VA, Passage paid of Edward Bray by Capt. Coldham, Gen. Pub. Co., 1990, Baltimore, MD So, do we pick one of these Henry or Edward Brays to be the ancestor of the Henry Bray of Chatham County, NC who died in 1812? I gathered this information a number of years ago while doing research on the Brays. About the only thing that may be for sure and even then there is no way of proving it: Around the early 1750s in Frederick County, MD a Henry Bray sold some cattle. He signed the bill of sale with his "mark". This mark was a conjoined H and B. He or his relative used the same "mark" to sign a land deed in Orange County, NC in the early 1760s. Henry Bray who died in Chatham County, NC in 1794 used the same "mark" to sign his will. As far as I know this is the only documentation that we have that indicates that Henry Bray, d. 1794, Chatham County, NC was in the American Colonies at least by the early 1750s. Where he came from and who he married is, as far as I am concerned pure speculation.
