Hello Bray Listmembers, The lady mentioned below is a first cousin of mine. If any of you on this list are related to her please write me as I am researching this BRAY line in Georgia. Thanks, Donna --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Featured obituary: Miss Lydia Bray Web posted Tuesday, January 21, 2003 10:46 p.m. EST By Amy Connell Staff Writer The 24 years spent in the Army were the happiest for Lydia Bray, family members say. She was one of the few women stationed at West Point in the late 1950s. "The Army was her life," said her niece, Ruth Horner. "That was what she remembered the most." Miss Bray, 80, died Sunday at her residence. She joined the Army in 1948, eventually working her way up to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Miss Bray worked in intelligence. Her sister, Mirian Horner, said Miss Bray enjoyed traveling with the Army. "She went to France, Holland and Germany," Mrs. Horner said. "In France, she lived with a (French family). She liked the city itself and the people." A native of Athens, Miss Bray graduated from the Conservatory of Music in Macon before joining the Army. She was a contralto singer, and Ms. Horner said her aunt wanted to sing like Patsy Cline when she grew up. "She had a very deep voice," her niece said. "She wasn't an alto, but she wasn't a bass ... she was in-between. But back in the '40s, her voice wasn't very marketable." That didn't stop Miss Bray from singing whenever she had the chance. She often sang in churches, and her talent allowed her to perform in France and on a local radio station. After her retirement from the Army in 1972, Miss Bray earned an art degree from Augusta College. The elder Mrs. Horner remembered her sister creating many sculptures and paintings. "She loved to sculpt," her sister said. "She painted a lot of pictures, and she was always trying to be creative for things. Her favorite artist was Gauguin." Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Platt's Funeral Home with the Revs. Mark E. Harris and W. Sherrell Dunn officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park with full military honors. Diane: It is so strange that the only Bray's I have ever heard of are the Texas ones and I believe it is the Kentucky ones. I don't think I have ever heard of any Georgia Brays until today. I have put inquiries on this web site before and I never got a response. It does make you wonder. Why doesn't anyone know anything about this Georgia line. Is it just that no one is interested in this line, surly it couldn't be anything they could have done. To find any skeletons in the closet, you would have to really dig into the family history. Nothing could be found from census records or such. I do know that the bunch in Atlanta owned night clubs and had alot of money. That is what a cousin that lives up around Danaielsville told me. One of my mother's cousins that I never knew was Jerry Bray. He was one of the biggest penecostal preachers in the Atlanta area. His son is a preacher in the Atlanta area. He is the one who refered me to his aunt in Danielsville. The only problem is I know more about the family than they do. So, if any thing happened it had to be 3 or 4 generations back. Ezekiel and his two sons, George and Henry fought for the South during the War Between the States and he is buried in the graveyard behind the new court house in Danielsville. Henry died in the War. An SCV man in Danielsville who knew of Ezekiel spoke very fondly of him. He said that people called him Uncle Zek. I have not worked on this line in a number of years. I suppose I should get on it again. Ezekiel's son, Ezekiel Taylor, and his family are buried in Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville, Ga. If anyone know any more, please let me know. Barbara Cooper
Yes Ezekiel Bray is my gg grandfather. I went wild with my greats the last time. I have everything to present put, I can't get past his generation. Thought as I said, I believe his father was Bannister and that they came from NC. Can't prove anything. Babara Cooper

Hello Listmembers, My great grandfather Harrison Bray lived in Madison County, Georgia, in 1900. He was born March 1873. In 1920 and 1930 he was living in Clarke County, Georgia. Some kinfolk say they remember something about his being adopted. So far I haven't been able to find out anything about his parents, nor have I been able to find a death certificate. I found a Harrison Bray living with Thomas and Rosanna Brooks of Jackson County, Georgia, listed as a son. The age is close enough so that MIGHT be the right man, but who are his real parents? With all these Brays in this northeast Georgia area that some of us are researching---we could very well be cousins! :) Let's not give up. We have to be connected because I was told that my Bray's came to Madison county so that would be a connection..My cousin Roddy of the daffodil farm in Gordon county is not forth coming on much information..but I have found out his line is not true..his parentage were adopted into the Bray line...so that might be some of his reluctance...I am planning a trip to Ga soon..and I grew up north of Atlanta..I have a good friend that has been doing genealogy since the early 60's and she will help me or tell me where to search...I will be glad to give what info I have as I get it..but you are right..wonder what skeleton is being kept in the closet and for what reason... take care a distant cousin I presume said of dear Dr Watson Diane Bray Broach
I find it hard to believe there is not more information on the Bray line in Georgia. My ggg grandfather was Ezekiel Bray of Danielsville, Madison Co. Ga. Bannister is obviously a family name as it appears several times in my research. I believe that a Bannister was the father of Ezekiel Bray. but I can't prove it. There is seldon mention made to the Ga. branch. I wonder why. Barbara Cooper
I would like to further my research but am meeting a lot of resistance from a cousin who has the complete lines done...is there someone out there who can help me..Bannister was born somewhere in Va around 1800 and died 1863 in Gordon County, Ga..Jackson is just in the Bray lines...I descend from Bannister..my gggrandfather was Bannister O Bray who was married to a Susannah Rudd..Thanks for any help in advance.. I would also be interested in them as I think I may be a descendent of Henry Bray, I've only been doing this for a year and still have alot to learn!! I wrote the article in the November 1996 issue of the Brayville Gazette. The Gazette was a family publication that I wrote for a couple of years. A Henry Bray of Chatham Co., NC was tried in 1782 for Loyalist leanings. He was subsequently found not guilty and his property was not confiscated. In 1788 he received 110 pounds sterling from the State of North Carolina Public Treasury as a reimbursement for materials he supplied the state during the Revolutionary War. However, Henry Bray's great granddaughter, Mahala Bray Brown, daughter of William Bray and Margaret Brooks, stated in a letter written in 1891, that Henry Bray "fought and aided the British all through the 7 years war." Was this the Henry Bray, d. 1812 or his father Henry Bray who died in 1794? It is likely that the political situation that prevailed in Chatham County, NC during the Revolutionary War was such that there was a lot of fingering point and gossip as to one's loyalties. Hope this helps.
