    1. [BRAY-L] Elkanah Bray
    2. Marcy
    3. In February of this year I posted a query to the BRAY message board. The query was automatically sent to the mail list also. The responses to my query were made to the mail list (which I wasn't subscribed to) instead of the message board, so I didn't receive them. I just found them in the mail list archives. My post: I am looking for any information on Elkanah Bray, born 05 Oct 1771 in Boston, Mass, to David Bray and Rebecca Hallet. Elkanah married Elizabeth Bentley in Delaware, date unknown, Elizabeth's parents unknown. Elkanah may have been a sea captain. He possibly died in Philadelphia, PA, date unknown. Children unknown, except Mary who married David Vondersmith. --- In the 1800 census, Elkanah was in New Castle county, Delaware. By 1810 he was in Philadelphia, PA. One person said his first name was actually "Elhanon" but it is Elkanah in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 census records and in "The Library of Cape Cod History and Genealogy, The Bray Family of Yarmouth." He was the master of the Brig James Coulter of Philadelphia on 26 January 1832. I'm interested in whether anyone might have additional information. Thank you very much! Marcy

    3. Hi Judy, The date is correct as I just cut and pasted it straight from the page, the website itself has nothing to do with Ancestry website though I think there is a advertisement on the page for Ancestry. Try searching for just Bray instead of the Sonoma Co., I only searched by using surnames rather than actual places, any problems let me know and I'll try to help, but I've had no problem with getting onto the site though occassionally when wanting to look at a particular page got the message that page not found. 3. Would this Bray line have a daughter born ca 1848? Name of Martha? Was a wife named Mary? My g-grandmother was Martha Ellen Bray, born ca 1848 in Georgia. She married my g-grandfather in Pike Co., AL in 1872. In a later census, her mother, Mary Yarbrough, was living with them. I am thinking that perhaps her father died in the Civil War and her mother remarried. Does your information include any of this? Among their children, Moses, Lafayette, VanBuren, Washington the latter three served in Civil War, Co. K, 9th Maine. I have Melzar and Susannah, along with Sally and several of their children buried in Pease-Thompson Cemetery in Avon, ME. 3. Hi Linda, Thanks for all the postings lately. Great helps ! I have a brick wall GGGrandmother named Martha Bray and so this caught my attention. Bray is her married name but she divorced. They lived in Sonoma Co., CA. The 1870 date is too early to fit in with birthdates of her children with R. Bray. I was wondering (hoping) if you got the date 1870 wrong. I tried to get on the web site but Sonoma CO. is not coming thru. Do you have to belong to Ancestry.com to access this site? 3. Well, one of my Bray's left Maine after the Civil War and I think the also came to California but I can't seem to find him. My ggg grandfather was Ezekiel Bray of Danielsville, Madison Co. Ga. Bannister is obviously a family name as it appears several times in my research. I believe that a Bannister was the father of Ezekiel Bray. but I can't prove it. There is seldon mention made to the Ga. branch. I wonder why. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5gF.2ACIB/1182.1 Message Board Post: I don't have Berry Irwin Bray from Tennessee, but I have Berry Irwin Bray born Alabama and died in Texas. An Old Letter Rusty Franks found the following letter in some papers and books belonging to his mother, Manervie Bray Franks, after she died. The letter was published this time in the Gatesville paper in 1970. Text of the old letter follows: I see a great many of the Old Timers writing to the News and I thought I would come in for a little space. I was born in Henry County, Alabama and lived there until I was about 14 years old, then moved to Coffee County. Lived there til 1854. Then emigrated to Texas and joined the Confederate Army in 1862 and went east in Captain Hicks Company. I was in the seige at Vicksburge where my First Lieutenant L. Clark was killed. My father, Little Berry Bray was born in Washington County, Georgia in 1801. He emigrated to Alabama in the early days. There were few whites in the country. He settled in Henry County. He remained there till 1840. He then moved to Dale County where I grew to full manhood. Here I decided to do business for myself. On the 11th day of January 1854 I was married to Catherine Carlton of Coffee County. In a few days after our marriage we started to seek our fortune in the Lone Star State across the Sabine River and set my foot on Texas soil on the 1st day of March 1854. ------------------------------------------------- He came to Texas in 1854 and lived in the Corsicana, Malakoff area until moving to Coryell County in 1878. The letter was not signed but was written by Berry Irvin Bray.
