    1. [BRAY-L] Harold Bray, Loudon County, Tennessee
    2. Jerry Bryan
    3. I wonder if anybody recognizes this Harold Bray from Loudon County, Tennessee. Dist. 2, Loudon County, Tennessee, 12 May 1910 p.161a, Broadway, HN 447, FN 466 McMahan Eli head 48 m m1-28 w laborer/k. mill NC NC NC Maggie wife 44 f m1-28 w TN TN TN Walter son 20 m s w laborer/k. mill TN NC TN Lula dau 11 f s w laborer/k. mill AL NC TN Edgar son 9 m s w AL NC TN Oliver son 6 m s w AL NC TN Rice son 4 m s w AL NC TN Green Mose boarder 30 m m1-6 w laborer/foundry TN TN TN Rhoda boarder 30 f m2-6 w laborer/foundry TN TN TN 4 children, 2 living Dexter boarder 12/12 m s w TN TN TN Bray Harold boarder 10 m s w TN TN TN This census entry is not as helpful as it might otherwise be because the Green family was living as boarders. So the census doesn't say for sure, for example, that Rhoda was Mose Green's wife. But both Mose and Rhoda were married and they had both been married for six years, so it's reasonable to assume that they were married to each other. Similarly, it's reasonable to assume that Dexter Green was the son of Mose and Rhoda. But what about Harold Bray? Well, Harold was ten years old, Rhoda had been married to Mose Green for six years, her marriage to Mose Green was her second marriage, and she had borne four children with two still living. So I think it's reasonable to assume that Harold Bray was Rhoda's son by her first husband Mr. Bray. Also, I think it's reasonable to assume that Harold Bray and his father Mr. Bray were members of my Bray family. There were several members of my Bray family living very very close by. For example, living very close by was Mary Mahala Jane (Haley) Bray, Charles L. (Charlie) Bray, and George Samuel Bray. Haley Bray was my g grandmother. In 1910, she was married and living with my g grandfather John W. Williamson. Uncle Charlie Bray was Haley Bray's son with her first husband W.G.W. Green. The reasons why Uncle Charlie was Charlie Bray rather than Charlie Green are a little fuzzy, the sort of thing that is apparently not spoken of. George Bray was Haley's brother. But again, who was Harold Bray? For the most part, Haley's brothers were too young or too married to somebody besides Rhoda to have been Harold Bray's father. But Haley did have one brother named William Webster (Billy) Bray for whom I have no wife listed, and Uncle Billy Bray was old enough to have been the father of Harold. (Uncle Billy Bray always referred to himself as "W.W. Bray".) So I went looking for marriages between a William Bray and a Rhoda. I found a marriage in Knox County, Tennessee (adjacent to Loudon County) on 29 Sep 1895 between William Bray and Rhoda Amos. Uncle Billy Bray was born in 1875, so he would have been 20 years old in 1895. The 1910 census says that Rhoda, wife of Mose Green and presumed mother of Harold Bray, was born in 1880, so she would have been 15 years old in 1895. I think it likely that Uncle Billy Bray was the William Bray who married Rhoda Amos, and that they were the parents of Harold Bray. However, I am looking for proof. By the way, I certainly wonder if W.G.W. Green and Mose Green might have been related. I have not been able to find out anything about W.G.W. Green, not his parents, not his birth date or birth place, nothing. And I just ran across Mose Green in the last day or two. There is nothing in the oral family history about whether Uncle Billy Bray had a son named Harold or not, and I'm not surprised either way. It's the sort of thing that wouldn't be spoken of. For that matter, there is very little in the oral family history about Uncle Charlie Bray's father. People remember visiting Uncle Charlie's house, and they remember that his father was a Mr. Green. But when I ask what Mr. Green's full name was, they don't know. When I ask if Mr. Green and Haley Bray were married and divorced, or if Uncle Charlie was illegitimate, they don't know. All that they remember is that Uncle Charlie Bray's father was a Mr. Green, and that Uncle Charlie was raised by his grandparents Joseph A. Bray and Ferriba Salina (Salina) Moore. I only found out about the marriage between Haley Bray and W.G.W. Green by going through the Loudon County marriage records. However, I have not found a divorce nor an annulment for the marriage, nor have I found a death for Mr. Green. It seems that there must have been something to have terminated the marriage, or else Haley Bray couldn't have married John W. Williamson. Right now, I am trying to find William Webster (Billy) Bray in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. I know he was born in 1875 and I know he was still living up into the 20th century because people still living remember him. Also, I would like to find Harold Bray's death certificate, but I have no idea when he died. So any information anybody might have on Harold Bray would be much appreciated.
