    2. I have a lot of Bray information since I am a direct descendant of the ones from North Carolina and England, trying to finds roots for those who came from Ireland and settled in the Northeast. Information shows a relationship as the ones from England moved there during the middle ages. I have a very long database and can send you some if I can get more specific and if I have it I will upload it to you. Mel Ellis

You didn't say where your Sarah and William were from; was it the Cumberland region, south eastern Tennessee and Kentucky? My great grandparents were Bryant BRAY and Martha Jane HOWERTON. I think her parents were James HOWERTON and Melinda MAIDEN. All these families lived around the southeastern corner of TN and KY: Claiborne Co., TN, Knox Co., KY., Pulaski Co., KY, etc. I would like to share info with you if you have more on the Maidens. I have more on the Brays.

    1. [BRAY-L] Henry Bray married Sarah Yokley
    2. Pat Perkins
    3. I have finally figured out the Bray family that was associated probably related to my Poe family it is the family of Henry Bray that married Sarah Yokley . my reasoning is that Henry Bray Jr acted as administrator along with widow Susannah when William Poe died, circa 1799 they having qualified having posted bond with Henry Bray Sr (who is the son of old Henry who died circa 1790) Henry Jr was actually Henry lll He was the son of Henry that married Sarah Yokely ) . they are the only ones that fit as the Henry Sr and Henry Jr for that time period . The tax district (Smiths district for Chatham co for 1815) contains many of the sons of Henry and Sarah this is the same district that Susannah would live in based on the folks near her on the 1800 census and also there were several of these same Brays that show up as buyers of the estat e sale for William Poe . I know that about 1826 the John w Poe that I believe is the son of William and Susannah also maintained a connection to this family as he signed a deed wher Harry and Isaac Bray sold land belonging to the Paschal family also connected to this Bray family because Nancy Bray daughter of James Bray (who was another son of Henry and Sarah) Nancy married a Paschal . I still do not know how William Poe that died in 1798 or 1799 who left widow Susannah connects to this Bray family but he definately connects to this particular family I believe he is the son of William Poe and Elizabeth Bray Who I believe migrated to Surry in the late 1799 . any one connected to this bran! ch of the Brays who might have information please contact me Patricia Caviness Perkins

    1. Re: [BRAY-L] Brays from England 1718-1790
    2. Nancy Cooper
    3. Yes, Vern, this "appears to be" my line. I have both volumes of THE BRAYS OF FISHER RIVER by Edna B. Reese, and she, as well as others, seem to think Bryant is one of Peter and Martha's sons. I have established by ancestry back to my greatgrandfather, another Bryant, who had a son named James who died of fever in the Civil War. (Camp Nelson, Union Hosp.) In the 1850 census James was married and living next to his mother, (a Martha, but she was listed as 45) who was listed as a Head of Household with other children, along with a 92 year old pauper from NC named Bryant. Hence my "missing link". James was reportedly born in Hancock/Hawkins Co., TN abt. 1823. He married Winny GOLDEN. Now, to get to your specifics...I have lots of ancestors that were early planters all along the east coast from New Amsterdam to Charleston. My dad's mother was a STEVENSON and her mother was a SWEARINGI(E)N back to Garet Van Sweringen. He was a West Indies trader who sailed from Rotterdam. My mother's family was LEWIS and goes back to the north/south Carolina eastern shore on back to Wales. (Beyond that I don't know specifically.) Her mother was MANNING, earliest immigrant, from her cousin's research, and presumed by the family to have been a John that came over in 1635 from London on either the Globe or the Primrose. I forget offhand which one is supposed to be ours, but ours is said to have been able to sign his name rather than make his mark. (Yeah, the cousin was a school teacher. <grin>) However, I have seen some further research that lists even some of the earlier MANNINGs, and there was an Edward associated with some of the COOPERs in Bertie Co., NC. My husband's line has been verified by DNA to match with David Cooper, presumed to be the s/o Marcome Cooper, b. 1699 Warwickshire, ENG. Now, in researching that line, in some of my earlier hunts for a Cader in NC, I did find records of *a* Peter Bray being called for both jury duty and road service in Bertie Co. If you have not read it, a really good book for helping determine where our English ancestors came from by analyzing their settling patterns in the colonies is ALBION'S SEED by David Hackett Fischer. It is a very detailed and annotated volume, even in thick paperback, but I would recommend it to anybody with English roots. Give me some more specifics and I will be glad to share what I have found.
