David, >I am wondering if other people have hit this sort of a wall. Yes. >I have the following questions if anyone would like to ponder >over them and provide a response: > >1. How could I locate the birthplace of Columbus BRAY in Missouri, not >knowing the city or county? > A) Point your browser to the GenWeb and RootsWeb sites for Missouri. See if there are HelpLists for the counties in that state. Ask the volunteers in those counties to check the census indexes and birth and death indexes for those counties for that name. B) Do you know where he may have died? Look for a death record (see "A", above); often it will state the place of birth and may contain other important information. If you find the death record, look for an obit in the paper for that community; it will often contain biographical information, including place of origin, surviving family members, etc. C) Post messages on the RootsWeb County sites for, Missouri, asking for any information on that name. >2. How can I find out Columbus' father's name? I assume that he fought > and died in the Civil War, because he was around in 1858 or thereabouts and > was not living in 1870. The additional information listed on the 1870 and >1880 censuses indicate that Columbus N. BRAY was born in Missouri > (no place given) in 1858 or 1859. Not a safe assumption. There are many possible causes of death, in those days. You can check with the Adjutant General for the State of Missouri to see if any BRAY's from that area appear in the muster rolls for the Civil War regiments. You really need to check earlier censuses to see if he appears in, say the 1840, 1830 or earlier censuses. Also, see the resources listed above. >His alleged wife Avarilla was old (56) in 1870 and >was not listed in the 1880 census, so I assume she had died and therefore >there is no record on the Confederate Veteran Pension List for AR. Also not a safe assumption. There are a number of other possible reasons for her not being in the 1880 census, the most likely of which (aside from death) being that she was living with a descendant; a very common situation back then, I have found several ancestors who were older, NOT by looking for their names as head of household (which I did), but by finding other people of that surname and then discovering that persons name as also living there. Hope this helps. Byron [email protected]
I am tracing my wife's family history, and have hit a wall of sorts. We were able to trace our BRAY family from Peach County, TX, in the 1940s back to Arkansas around 1860. My wife's g-grandfather was Columbus N. BRAY and is listed in the 1880 census with his wife and children living in Sharp County, AR, and, according to the actual census schedules, he is living next door to an older woman by the name of Avarilla (sp?) BRAY with some other children / hired hands but no husband. She is listed as a widower. In the 1870 Census, Columbus N. BRAY is listed as living in the one household with his mother (I assume) Avarilla. The additional information listed on the 1870 and 1880 censuses indicate that Columbus N. BRAY was born in Missouri (no place given) in 1858 or 1859. Since there aren't that many people with a first name of Columbus, it has been fairly easy to track him so far. But, in the 1860 census records, there is no listing. I can assume (maybe) that his family was living in MO somewhere, but where? I have a record from an online search of AR land records that there was a purchase of a tract by a one John BRAY in 1859 in Arkansas. I am wondering if other people have hit this sort of a wall. I have the following questions if anyone would like to ponder over them and provide a response: 1. How could I locate the birthplace of Columbus BRAY in Missouri, not knowing the city or county? 2. How can I find out Columbus' father's name? I assume that he fought and died in the Civil War, because he was around in 1858 or thereabouts and was not living in 1870. His alleged wife Avarilla was old (56) in 1870 and was not listed in the 1880 census, so I assume she had died and therefore there is no record on the Confederate Veteran Pension List for AR.
I am researching Bray's from Whitley Co., KY. I am looking for the parents of Billy Bray and his wife Amy Cox. I don't have birth and death dates for these two. For birth dates, I would guess 1840's. Children are Matthew Bray (b. Apr. 5, 1864 -d. Jun 17, 1928 from mad dog bite; m. Rachel Rose), George Bray, Pete Bray, Lewis Bray and Sara Jane Bray Maiden. I do know that Billy Bray is buried on Tiny Branch. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Karen Bray Bowles

I am looking for information regarding HENRY ALFRED BRAY, born 27 Oct 1825 (apparently in Connecticut), who lived, for a time in Ohio. He married JANE FULLER sometime around 1850. According to his death certificate, his father's name was "Henry Bray". His son, Alfred Francis Bray, married Lora Adelia Grant in Huntington, Lorain County, Ohio in 1878 and they (Alfred & Lora) traveled west to Ojai, California by about 1900. Henry Alfred moved out to California by about 1910 (as shown in census) and died there in 1921. Any information would be gratefully received. I know a great deal about their descendents and will happily share. Good luck to all!! Byron [email protected]

I am seeking any information regarding A. J. BRAY, son of Phillip and Sarah Jane WHITE...BRAY of Nelson Co. Ky b. ca. 1841, disappears after the 1870 Nelson Co. Ky. Census. Also another son, Willis BRAY b. ca. 1861 in Nelson Co., he never shows up as an adult in this area. bob
Clare- If your ancestors were in Chatham Co., NC, chances are better than good they were descendants of (one of the) Henry BRAYs. I have a friend's database, and while it is not my line, I have checked it for any possible "clues" to mine. He shows Jeremiah S.(b.Nov. 7, 1812) married to Elizabeth Whitehead as the s/o Eli BRAY, b. 1778 Chatham Co., and Mary COX, Eli being the s/o Henry,b. 1742 Charles City Co., MD and Sarah YORKLEY/YOKLEY? (Another reference I have,THE BRAYS OF FISHER RIVER by Edna Bray Reese, lists Eli as married to Mary HADLEY, and calls Sarah YOKLEY.but doesn't follow up on Eli's line.) There seems to be quite a bit of documentation on Henry and descendants researching. (WHERE ARE YOU ALL NOW???) As with any "clues", it would be best to verify and document for yourself, but thought this might be a point in the right direction. Good luck. Nancy Bray Cooper
Dan, You said: >While clearing unwanted "junk" e-mail I inadvertently deleted the inquiry >regarding BRAY of New Bern, NC. Please send inquiry directly to me as my >BRAY >line came from New Bern. I know how you feel, as I accidently did the same thing to the whole BRAY folder as I was moving files. So, PLEASE FOLKS,I would like to hear from anybody that has contacted me before(or anybody that might have new info-tell me more about your New Bern BRAY.) My line is, from my father back: 1.Clarence Warner"Mule" BRAY, b. Aug.24,1918, Checotah, McIntosh Co., OK, d.April 14, 1982, Falfurrias, Brooks Co., TX. 2. s/o James "Ed"ward, b.July 31, 1879 Barbourville, Knox Co., KY, d.Feb. 2, 1921, Devol, Cotton Co., OK and Sophronia "Fronie" (STEVENSON)MCCAIN,b.1882, Ozark, Franklin Co., KY 3.Bryant BRAY, b.1853, Barbourville, Knox Co., KY. m. Martha Jane HOWERTON,b. Claiborne Co., TN(I think, possibly d/o Green Howerton and Mary MULLINS?) Bryant and Martha Jane removed to St. Joseph, Buchannan Co., MO by 1880, although they do not appear in the census, as two enumeration districts started on either side of their residence, as listed in city directories for that time period. Need date of death and place of burial for both. 4.James Bray(another one) and Mary "Winny" GOLDEN, according to one souce, who cites him as the son of another Bryant. 5. Bryant BRAY(THE other) from Surry Co., NC, which is documented in Edna B.Reese's book(s) THE BRAYS OF FISHER RIVER. Brother of Littleberry, Stogner,(went to TN),David, Sr., Peter(went to KY),and John. All the sons of Peter BRAY,"The Red-Headed Englishman", and Martha SCOTT. I apologize for the incomplete message sent earlier. I hit the wrong key by accident while typing the email. I am trying to find information about my ggrandmother MARGARET BRAY (NC) born February 16, 1847, died January 15, 1922. I think her parents were Jeremiah S. Bray (1812-1865) and Elizabeth J. Whitehead (no dates) but I have no proof of this as yet. MARGARET BRAY married DANIEL COBLE (or Daniel G.) BROWN (September 4, 1863-March 26, 1926). They had the following children: Sarah Edna Brown (1882-1924), Wesley Roe Brown (1883-1945), Fannie Olive Brown (1886-1973), Mossie Rena Brown (1889-1929)--my grandmother--, and Newby Correl Brown (1892- ). Margaret and Daniel are buried at Brush Creek Cemetary in Chatham County, NC. Any help would be appreciated. Clare [email protected]
Does anybody have yet another Mary BRAY? this one the second wife of William LEWIS, b. 1774, Leesburg,Loudoun Co., VA., d. 1864, White Co., TN. These are the stats on William, so I'm presuming her's would fall somewhere within that range too, since I have nothing further on her. As for state, though, don't know if the death location was Civil War related or if they had immigrated. TIA, Nancy

Searching for information on Anna Bridgid Brady and family. She was born in Ireland. She was married to James Murphy. They had a son James Phillip Murphy born in Mass. about 1851. Their 2nd son, John Murphy was born about 1853 in Conn. Their third son Thomas W. Murphy was born in Lawrence , Kansas Oct. 25, 1856. James died probably before 1860. Anna married Thomas Griffin and they had a son named Edward. Her son Thomas married Anna Fleshman. They had seven children. Her son James married Ruby Eleanora Cole and they had three children. This is about all I know. I would appreciate any help. Thank you. Margaret Miller
Hi all, I had the hardest time getting the formatting of my post on Capt. Bray's family tree to "hold together" through e-mail. There is at least one formatting error, though, that made it through and that could be confusing. Where Captain William Bray's children are listed, the first six are by his first wife, Isabella Boddie, and children 7 - 12 are by Arry Ann Brown. Also, Harold, thanks for your great effort to show me the proper protocol for posts. You really went out of your way, and I appreciate it. I've chosen to use the same "improper" header for this post since it relates directly to my earlier post with the same title. Sorry for the mistakes, Chas
