    1. [BRAY-L] M. D. Bray of Moran, TX
    2. I'm doing historical research on the town of Moran, TX and have been trying to find out information about its early years from its pioneer families. One of them, M. D. Bray, lived there in the 1880's and 1890's, was a lumberman, and owned a lot of land in the town in the 1890's. If anyone has any information, I would appreciate it. Thanks. Duston

    1. [BRAY-L] Brays in MO, AR, maybe TN
    2. I haven't brought this up in a while, so I will mention it. I am researching Ann E. BRAY, Mother of Columbus N. BRAY, of Sharp County, Arkansas, in the 1870 census. Sharp County was originally part of Lawrence County, AR, until 1868. Other offspring of Ann E. BRAY include Jefferson BRAY, who I think later bought land and moved to MO in the late 1870s. There was also a matilda BRAY listed in the 1870 census, but she may have been a cherokee indian child adopted by the family earlier. Columbus N. BRAY later was married to a Matilda and this may be the same Matilda. I don't have a clue as to who the father in the family was.The Census states that Ann was born in Tennessee, while Columbus was born in MO. Jefferson was born in AR. Columbus was born in 1856; Jefferson was born in 1860 or 1861. Matilda was born in 1854. Ann was born in the 1830s probably. If these names / dates / places ring a bell with anybody, please let me know. I don't want to have to re-invent the wheel if someone else has done research and is willing to share.

    1. Re: [BRAY-L] Rockcastle/Pulaski
    2. Hi Jim, Welcome. I also keep an eye out for BRAYs in that area. Even though my grandfather James Edward, and his father, Bryant BRAY, were both born in Barbourville, Knox Co., KY, the family owned land in Pulaski and Rockcastle at various times. I do know this Bryant was b. c. 1853 and married Martha Jane HOWERTON April 7, 1876 in Barbourville. Information I got from another researcher shows Bryant's father to be another James, who married Mary "Winny" GOLDEN. The 1850 census for Knox Co. shows at # 490-500 BRAY, Martha ?? head of household 45 NC 100 acres Eliz 21 TN Nathan 19 TN Nancy 14 KY John 5 KY Mary A. 4/12 KY and Bryant 92 NC pauper at # 491-501 is listed James Bray 26 TN 125 acres Winny 24 KY William F.(Franklin) 1/12 KY By the 1860 census James and Winny are listed in the Pulaski Co. report as 34 and 32 William is said to be 11, and added to the family are Solmon`9, *Bryant* 7, Sarah 5, Mary 3, and John 2/12. I'm looking for Martha's missing spouse, not the older Bryant, first because of age, but also, in the 1840 census he is listed as head of a household along with a 60-70 year old wife and another woman 40-50 and a male 20-30, male 10-15 and females 10-15 and 5-10. These could fit maybe yet an older male? ,James, and Eliz(abeth?), Nathan, and Nancy. Is this your line??? Or does anybody recognize them? If it is I would be happy to swap note with you. If not, who are your's, and I will keep an ey out for them too. Happy Family Tree climbing, and Merry Christmas to all. 2. Dick & Barbara Lemieux
    3. I doubt we are connected, Rose, but I couldn't help but reply to your post because of the similarity of our names and places (and because it gives me another opportunity to post my dead end). I have been searching for a BRADY family from Quebec. Marie BRADY was my great great grandmother. She was the daughter of Patrice (Patrick) BRADY and Elizabeth TARDY (or TARDIFF or FARDY). Marie had at least one brother; I know of no other siblings. She was born in 1822. I don't yet know where, but I speculate it was either Ireland or Canada. She married a French Canadian, Louis LEMIRE, in Wotton, Quebec, on October 11, 1842, when she was about 20. She died on 5/31/1903. Her brother Patrick was married to Odile PELLETIER, a French Canadian woman, also in Wotton, on 7/3/1849. According to his marriage record, he was less than 21 years old and he was an orphan at the time. Thus, Patrick Sr. and Elizabeth both died before 7/3/1849 and Patrick Jr. was born after 7/3/1828. Assuming that the parents were about 21 when Marie (as far as I know, their oldest child) was born, the parents were probably born around or before 1801. I speculate that Patrice and Elizabeth might have been part of the Irish immigration of 1832. This was also the year that a cholera epidemic hit Quebec (and the rest of Canada). I further speculate that Patrice and Elizabeth died in that epidemic and that their orphaned children were raised by french Canadians. Another possibility is that the children were sent to Canada after they had been orphaned in Ireland. Nevertheless, it is almost certain that the parents (at least the father) were born and raised in Ireland and they were probably married there as well. If you could give me any information on Patrice/Patrick BRADY and Elizabeth TARDY/TARDIFF/FARDY or any information on any other BRADYs in that place and time, I would be very grateful. 2. Hi Cousins, I haven't posted in quite a while, and there are still many wonders and marvels for which to give thanks, in spite of recent circumstances. After staying with us for six months while she underwent chemotherapy, my husband's mother and father had returned to their own home about 90 miles from here when she developed a high fever from what turned out to be a severe kidney infection, and the neighbors called us that they were taking her to the local emergency room. We arrived before she was actually taken to a room. That night, however, HE took a turn for the worse, from an 18 yr. struggle with emphysema, and after having to be put on oxygen back in Feb. On Sunday, Nov. 8, my husband and his sister decided to bring him back down here where better doctors and facilities were available for his condition. They arrived at the hospital with full trauma staff meeting them at the door, but he didn't make it. Winston "Pete" Cooper was b. June 26, 1920 in Cuero, DeWitt Co., TX the son of Monroe Cornelius and Emma(SCOGIN) COOPER. At the outset of World War II, he enlisted in the Army, and after basic training in Camp McCoy, LaCrosse, Wisconsin, embarked with Co. E, 9th Infantry Division, as it landed near Cherbourg, Normandy Beach, France, on "D-Day", June 6, 1944. He was awarded a Purple Heart Medal of Valor for injuries from scrapnel, and an inoperable bullet which lodged near his spine, and remained there throughout his life. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by an older brother, William "Monroe" Cooper, a former electrician from Cuero, and a son, Raymond Eugene Cooper, who was killed in the line of duty as a police officer in 1978. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, a daughter and three sons, and their families, including eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He kept his sense of humor, even exchanging jokes he collected, or that I had copied for him from Email or online, with the nurses and staff of drs. he had seen the previor week. He also enjoyed hearing of my genalogical progress on his family. At the funeral, I introduced my mother, Hazel Bray, to one of his cousins, who had been adopted, and had just a fews years ago reunited with her birth mother. She looked at my mother with a startled expression and said ,"Hazel Bray??!! You heard, didn't you? that my birth mother's name was _private_ Bray?!!" I had not heard, and I guess she either didn't remember, or maybe never even had heard my maiden name. The Lord does move in mysterious ways. We plan to pick up the trail first chance we get. Meanwhile, I guess my mail system must have looked like Granny's attic, and she never got rid of anything either. When I got back it was down, i.e GONE. So all you nice people that had contacted me before, PLEASE write again. I am from Clarence W. BRAY, b. Aug. 24, 1918 Checotah, McIntosh Co., OK s/o James Edward BRAY, b. I have some more unverified group sheets on them, but haven't had a chance to follow up lately. I have both copies of THE BRAYS OF FISHER RIVER by Edna B. Reese, and the question is:????How does this Bryant(III) tie into the "Old Bryant"(or Buant, which she calls him, after probably trying to read illegible Br*i*ant), of Surry Co., NC???? Who were James'(IV) parents? That is all I know. If you know these name Please help me >and write. >Sincerely with much Thanks >Donna DeGraw [email protected] Donna, Do you know where, in Maine, she was born?? I would suggest that you look in the census index for Maine in, say, 1850. There may also be a Maine State census, which would probably take place in 1845 and 1855 (state censuses usually take place between federal census years). Indexes for these would contain her name and would refer you to the actual census schedules. These schedules will show the parents' names. I would assume that you have looked at the obituary for her, which would have appeared in the Lakeview paper. It is almost certain to include information such as her town of birth, parents' names and much other valuable biographical data. If I were you, this would be one of the first items I would track down. Lakeview is the county seat of Lake County, Oregon, and will certainly have had a newspaper in 1938. Lake County was formed from Jackson and Grant counties around 1870, so you will probably find the obit in Lakeview; you will probably find the marriage record there, as well, though there is an outside chance that you may have to look in the county records for Jackson County for the marriage record. You can also search birth indexes for the state of Maine. If you can pinpoint the place of birth, you can obtain a certified copy of the birth certificate, which will probably include both the name and the birthplace of the parents. In addition, you can search the Iowa marriages indexes for 1859 to find this couple. It is more than possible that you will find this marriage. Then you can go to the county records department (by phone, letter, etc.) to get a copy of the marriage certificate, which often mentions the name and place of origin for the parents. It would also be profitable, once you've pinpointed the birth and/or marriage dates and locations, to search the local newspapers for announcements of marriage and/or birth. There are other avenues of inquiry, but these are the likeliest; try them. You may not be close to a library that contains these resources, but you can use the Mormon Church's "Family History Center" in your area; they will contain most, if not all, of these resources on microfilm or microfiche.
