    3. Hi Steph, I can't give you the help that you would really like, but this might be an interesting aside. I collect old photos, mostly "cabinet cards" (about 4x6 inches/10x15cm in size) of people and their dogs. One day I came across a "cdv" (a bit larger than the size of a business card or about 6x10cm) that had the required mother, child and dog. What made this especially interesting to me was the photographer: William Britton, High Cross, Barnstaple. Although my Britton's are from Co. Donegal, Ireland there was no way I was going to pass that photo up. I've scanned the cdv, front and back and the links below should take you to the photo. The back says that Wm Britton Photographer, &c is the oldest photographic establishment in North Devon and has a copy of his signature. In America, the cdv style of photography was popular from about the 1850's until the late 1860's. Perhaps someone on the list more familiar with English processes and photographic styles can give you a better time estimate for any research you may pursue. As an avenue of research, if they exist, maybe some old general or trade directories may prove enlightening. http://www.geocities.com/mhtruck/wmbrittoncdvfront.jpg http://www.geocities.com/mhtruck/wmbrittoncdvback.jpg Good Luck.
