They had nine children. There is a family story that my Grandfather James F. Bowdle of Ross County, Ohio, went to the World's Fair [Columbian Exposition] in Chicago in the fall of 1893. There is a posibility that he and the rest [??] of his party stopped in Kankee, IL to visit their cousins. Can any descendents of the Bratton-Bowdle family confirm this story?
I am looking for a John Hugh Bratten (Bratton?) who would lived in Lambert, MS about 1930. He would be a "young man", probably about 20 or so. He moved from there about that time period. Rolene Kiesling, Groveland, CA

I am making headway on my Brattain line. I have two brothers, William and Lemmons both born in IN. William born 13 oct 1810 and Lemmons born 20 Mar 1850 in Wayne Co., IN. I found a land record for William stating he was William Brattain Jr. in Farmington, Van Buren, IA, where he and Lemmons lived in 1830-1840's. Williams obit states that his father moved from Indiana to Lake Peoria(now Peoria) in 1816 then later they moved to Iowa about 1836. William moved later to Mt. Pleasant, Henry, Iowa and then Mahaska, IA where he died 26 Feb 1889. He married Martha Croxil or Cropstill in 1836 in Farmington, IA and had the following children: Humphrey L., Mary, Lemmons W., May S., and Charles. Humphrey married Cordelia A. Dawson, Mary married Thomas Havener, Lemmons W. married Caroline Seeker, May married William M. Burton and George Beechler, Lemmons moved from Farmington to Polk, Adair, MO in 1860, to Eden Decatur, Iowa in 1870's, to Lindley, Mercer, MO in 1880's where he died in Mercer Co., MO or Pleasanton, Decatur, IA on 15 Mar 1885. He married Sibyl Cooper 6 Apr 1865 in Van Buren Co., IA. He had the following children: Stephen? , Nancy Catherine, Georgianna, William Thomas, Emma Jane, Lemmons W., and Mary. Nancy Catherine married Joseph Wheeler, Georgianna married John J. Eastin, Emma Jane married William or M.F. Richardson, Lemmons W. married Mary Ann Hawthorne. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Brattain, Bratton, Croxil, Cooper, Millikan Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/FdF.2ACEB/319 Message Board Post: Hi! Our direct Bratton/Brattain ancestor is Lemmons Bratton. He appears in the 1850 living by William Brattain at Farmington, Van Buren, Iowa. Bratton and Brattain are both used in the records but appears to be the same family. Lemmons names one of his sons William and William names one of his sons Lemmons. William appears to be the older brother having established a birthdate of 13 Oct 1809 in Indiana. Lemmons was born 20 Mar 1815 in Wayne Co., Indiana. William's obituary states that his family moved from Indiana, to Illinois and then to Iowa. William remains in Iowa, minister by occupation in the UN?(from census) in Mt. Pleasant, Henry, Iowa for many years and finally ends up in Oskaloosa, Mahaska, Iowa and dies in Jefferson Twp, Mahaska, Iowa which is next to Oskaloosa in 1896. Lemmons moves to Polk, Adair, Missouri by 1860. Then he resides in various towns near the border of Missouri and Iowa. in Mercer Co., Missouri and Decatur, Iowa. He joins the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1881. He dies in 15 Mar 1885 probably in Pleasanton, Decatur Iowa. Now I have noticed that the well known Brattain line of Robert Brattain and Mary Millikan have a lot of similarities. Robert Brattain dies in Wayne Co., Indiana(birthplace of my Lemmons). Some of the children of Robert end up in Morgan County, Illinois. Jonathan Hill Brattain(Robert's son) is married in Van Buren, IA(where my brothers end up in 1850). I also find many Brattains living in Mercer Co., Missouri but have not established how they fit together. In a hisstory "A Short Oral History of the Early Brattons in America" which is about Paul Bratton/Brattain son of Robert, Benjamin Bratton Jr. of Searcy County Arkansas states in 1929 that Three brothers came form Scotland to America and seperated and that his great Grandfather Robert came to North Carolina and that his son Paul went to Tennessee. My Brattains could either be related to these other brothers or one of the sons of Robert Bratton that little is known about referring specifically to Thomas and Benjamin. Can anyone help me find some leads in my investigation. I have spent many hours working on it. I would appreciate any and all feedback. I am also willing to share what info I have. Hi Carrie, This sounds like a descendant of Paul Bratton who died in Hardin County, Tennessee in 1858. He had some grandsons and great-grandsons named William H. and Harvey. Have you checked the 1900 census for your William H. Bratton who was born in 1882? He probably was still in his parents household. Do you have a death certificate for him? Since he died after 1914 it would name his parents. Good luck. Jerry W.
