The Tattnall County native was a member of Meldrim Baptist Church, and retired from Union Camp after 40 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, with tours in Italy and Germany. He enjoyed fishing and doing yard work. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Minnie Branson of Bloomingdale; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Allen Gilbert of Tuscaloosa, AL; two sisters, Thelma Driggers of Hinesville and Lois O'Donnell of Lakeland, FL; a godchild, Cindy Oder of Rincon; a grandson, Joseph Gilbert; a granddaughter, Alicia Rogers; two great-grandchildren, Duston Rogers and Caleb Gilbert; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2, in the chapel of Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home West Chatham Chapel. Interment was in Lake Cemetery in Metter. Remembrances can be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, 322 8th Avenue, 6th Floor, New Yourk, NY 10001. Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.
