Grandfather, Charles Madison Branson b. Blacksburg, Va. 1854 d. St. Joseph, Mo. 1917. I have a copy of his death certificate which shows Father unknown, Mother maiden name Countess (or Countiss) also middle name of oldest daughter, (we were told family name.) I realize this doesn't answer your query, but first time have found family name Countiss, time frame coincides, w/sons named John and Charles, seemed enough to rule out coincidence altogether.
