Folks, I was asked to mention the following so I will: Yes, there are NASTY viruses out there for PC users (I use a Mac and am not usually affected). These viruses, like Melissa, and this newest one, are receiving major media coverage on both radio and TV. There are also computer cable channels, newsgroups, mailing lists and web sites devoted to the subject so there are many places to receive information and stay up to date. We will NOT discuss them on the lists. The rootsweb listserv PREVENTS attachments from being posted to the list. ANY attachment that someone attempts to post (accidentally or on purpose) bounces back to me and I will contact the sender. You CANNOT catch a hitch hiker worm or virus from a rootsweb list posting. However....DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS IN YOUR PRIVATE EMAIL unless you are certain who they are from and unless you have run your virus disinfectant software. That is the rule and the only way to stay safe. *WHAT TO POST* THINK about what you are posting and READ your message before hitting that "send" button. All genealogical subjects are welcome however be sure they are relevant to the list you're posting to. (Looking for John SMITH in MI is not appropriate to NORCAL - NORthern CALifornia). Provide significant information such as dates and locations. Capitalize SURNAMES. Cite references and sources if you have them. Some of my lists, such as CORNISH-GEN-L, are strictly genealogy-focused and others are more flexible. Understand the list you're on and post accordingly. *WHAT NOT TO POST* Virus hoaxes, virus warnings, Internet phone charges, dying child wishes, ANYTHING that tells you to forward the message to ten of your friends or all of your friends or everyone you know, current political commentary (ie. the war in Kosovo or Clinton's misdeeds), ANYTHING that is or appears to be racist, religious or political. We are NOT debate lists. If you are uncertain of the content of any message, write to me first. Do NOT post with a disclaimer such as "I know List Mom will be mad but...." or "Sorry List Mom but..." or "I know this is offtopic but....". All messages are important to someone somewhere. If concerned or interested in a rumor or hoax, visit: Urban Legends: http://urbanlegends.miningco.com/ Don't Spread That Hoax! http://www.nonprofit.net/hoax/hoax.html Computer Virus Myths Homepage: http://www.kumite.com/myths/ International Computer Security Association (ICSA) http://www.icsa.net/services/consortia/anti-virus/lab.html Computer Incident Advisory Capability (CIAC) US Dept. of Energy http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html *USE RELEVANT SUBJECT LINES* On high traffic lists (and in general) many people scan subject lines for material to read. Once a thread starts, often the subject line continues with something like "Re: Flag Day" and listers get discouraged. Feel free to CHANGE the subject line if the thread changes. THINK as much about your subject line as about the content of your message. If you are posting an URL, don't just put "Great Website!" in the subject - give some brief description such as "New SSI Website" and be sure the (correct) URL is in the body text. PLEASE change the subject line on digest replies. A subject line with "Re: ELLIOTT-D Digest V99 #105" is very frustrating. *REPLY TO A MESSAGE* Be sure a response is warranted and that yours is appropriate and relevant. "Me, too" or "I can't help you" replies to on-list posts are superfluous. When you reply to a message, use the "Reply to All" (or equivalent) choice and then EDIT recipients. Sometimes when you choose "Reply to All", the original poster AND the list is included. That means the original poster will get two copies of your response. And while we're responding...... *QUOTE ORIGINAL TEXT* A reply without quoted text is usually meaningless. You have to have something to tie your response to. However, while you're quoting original text..... *EDIT QUOTED TEXT* TAKE TIME TO EDIT! It's frustrating to all to have a whole message (or two or three), headers and all, quoted with a two line response. Edit out all but what you are replying to or what makes the original message make sense in the context of your response. Not editing quoted text or cutting out all the original threaded messages is very inconsiderate. *PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE* We encourage most research results and responses to be posted. However, if someone offers a lookup for instance, 50 responses of "Please look up John SMITH" are inappropriate. The lookup volunteer should require (on list) requests to be sent privately. Then the volunteer (if s/he chooses) can post results on list with a relevant subject line like "CADI Lookup/John SMITH". One of the risks of being on a mailing list is that people have access to you and will send you private emails, often critical or flaming. I will NOT involve myself in these exchanges for a variety of reasons however if you want my advice on how to respond, feel free to contact me. The best response is to ignore the person. If the situation gets out of control, on a CASE BY CASE basis, the person MAY be removed from the list. It depends on many circumstances. But I won't be involved in day to day private exchange. And while we're mentioning it..... *NO FLAMES* Flaming will NOT be tolerated in ANY form on ANY of my lists. *INSTRUCTIONS AND MAIL HELP* Sub/Unsub instructions are in the Welcome Message and posted periodically as list commands. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. USE THE CORRECT ADDRESS. If you need a copy of the Welcome Message, send an email to: <LISTNAME>-L-request@rootsweb.com (ie CORNISH-L-request@rootsweb.com) for list OR <LISTNAME>-D-request@rootsweb.com (ie CORNISH-D-request@rootsweb.com) for digest WITH "Archives" in the subject line (without the quotes) AND "get welcome.txt" (without the quotes) in the body. Turn off your signature. If you are having trouble with list mail, email me, NOT THE LIST. They usually can't help. Also, I can respond faster if I don't have to dig your message out of the digest. My address is plastered all over the place (including after the TOC in every digest) but for reference it's <yvonne@sonic.net>. Finally....use common sense, kindness and courtesy. TIME FOR A LIST COMMAND UPDATE! Please READ carefully and SAVE. PLEASE write to ME <yvonne@sonic.net>, not the WHOLE list if you are having an email or ISP problem. It creates unnecessary list traffic and I can react much quicker to a personal email than to see your problem buried in list traffic. NO-NOs: *DO NOT POST VIRUS NOTICES TO THE LIST!!!!!* *DO NOT POST MISSING/SICK/DYING CHILDREN NOTICES TO THE LIST!!!!!* *DO NOT POST EMAIL INTERNET CHARGES NOTICES TO THE LIST!!!!* Etc. ROOTSWEB SERVERS WILL REJECT: *MESSAGES W/ATTACHMENTS *MESSAGES WRITTEN IN HTML *MESSAGES WRITTEN IN RTF Be sure your mail program is set to "Plain Text". If in doubt about your program, visit: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/listowners/html-off.htm for more info. COMMANDS: The servers consider mail and digest separate COMMAND addresses. Depending on which "type" of list you are on, your command address will either be: BRANSON-L-request @rootsweb.com OR BRANSON-D-request@rootsweb.com. Please use the correct one. TO SUBSCRIBE OR UNSUBSCRIBE: SUBSCRIBE:: Send message to BRANSON-L-request@rootsweb.com with nothing but the word SUBSCRIBE in the body text. Use BRANSON-D-request@rootsweb.com if you are subscribing to the digest version. UNSUBSCRIBE: Send message to BRANSON-L-request@rootsweb.com with nothing but the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the body text. Use BRANSON-D-request@rootsweb.com if you are unsubscribing from the digest version. "NOMAIL": Rootsweb does NOT have a "NOMAIL" function. If you will be away, you must UNSUBSCRIBE from the list and (RE)SUBSCRIBE when you return. If you don't, 2 things may happen: 1) You will accumulate a ton of mail and 2) your ISP may start bouncing mail if you max out and the Rootsweb smartlist will automatically UNSUBSCRIBE you after 4 bounces NOTE: RESUB, RESUBSCRIBE AND UNSUB ARE NOT COMMANDS. Use SUBSCRIBE OR UNSUBSCRIBE. DIGEST/REGULAR MAIL Digest is available on all the lists. On slower lists, digest means no messages for a couple of days. Regardless of whether you are on digest or not, ALL messages are posted to BRANSON-L@rootsweb.com. To set digest, send a message to BRANSON-D-request@rootsweb.com with NOTHING but SUBSCRIBE in the body text. After you start receiving digest, UNSUBSCRIBE from regular mail by sending a message to BRANSON-L-request@rootsweb.com with UNSUBSCRIBE in the body text. If you don't do this, you will receive double messages. If you find you don't like digest, just reverse the process: UNSUBSCRIBE from BRANSON-D and RESUB (use SUBSCRIBE) to BRANSON-L (see instructions above).. Please note: some users don't recommend digest for AOL users because AOL's mail system often truncates, drops or detaches and re attaches as .mim files the digests. Good luck. CHANGING EMAIL ADDRESSES: If you are changing your email address, you must UNSUBSCRIBE from your OLD address, and RESUB (use SUBSCRIBE) from your NEW (see instructions above). ARCHIVES: REGULAR ARCHIVES: These appear on the web page: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?surname=BRANSON You do NOT need a user name or password. They are "searchable" by keyword but are not "threaded". THREADED ARCHIVES: These appear on the web page: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/BRANSON-L/ You DO need a user name and password. (the archive will prompt you to enter one, if you don't have one there is a button to set create one, and you will have immediate access). You will use it each time you visit the archives (regardless of which mailing list). Hi, Listers! I'm back from a busy but wonderful week in Italy (Santa Vittoria, Alba & Milano). I have lots of personal and list mail to get through. If you are having immediate problems, write me and put URGENT in the subject line. Otherwise, I'll be getting through it as fast as I can. Ciao! Listers, I will be in Santa Vittoria (near Milan) on business from Sunday, May 23 to Sunday May 30. I won't have my laptop with me so I will NOT be online next week. My son will be downloading mail for my return but will not be responding to any issues. If you send me a question or an issue, I will respond as soon as possible next weekend. Please be patient. If you put "Urgent" in the subject line, I'll read those first. Those of you who are experienced with the lists (and you know who you are :-) ), feel free to help with any list questions posted. If there is anything you need taken care of today (Saturday May 22 up until 10:00pm PDT), I will attempt to resolve. NONE of my web site updates will be done until Monday May 31. Grazie and ciao! See you all next weekend. Happy Memorial Day to the Americans. I was filing genealogy info Sunday and came across a letter a cousin wrote several years ago...Lionel Branson's land was surveyed by George Washington...this would have been the land in the Lost River area of Virginia which I believe is now West Virginia... Her letter also mentioned that one of the Bransons (Lionel's family) owned slaves..one of which was Chicken George, ancestor of Alex Haley who wrote ROOTS...another cousin told her that someone had verified this information.. anne
