    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kdF.2ACIB/447.1 Message Board Post: I found the answer to my own question about Ervin. I thought I'd share it for others who are looking for information on the same person. Ervin was actually George Irvin Branson. He was the husband of Mertie Defield who was the informant on his death certificate. I believe his middle name was spelled "Ervin" but was misspelled on the certificate.). He was born Jan. 9, 1873 and died on May. 8, 1921 from stomach cancer. He was only 48. According to his death certificate, he was born in Kansas--I'm surprised about this since most of his family lived in Denver, MO, Worth County, MO, which is where he later moved. He was the son of David Branson and Ellen (Ward) from Kansas. It's possible that Ellen was known as "Eula" or "Lula." Right now, I'm stuck on David Branson and Ellen Ward. So if you know anything about these two, please let me know. It appears that several Bransons married Wards. The two families must have had a close relationship. I'm also trying to figure out if this line of Bransons is related to the Valentine Branson line from St. Louis. There are so many David Bransons that I'm thoroughly confused. Thanks, Bobette Bryan

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kdF.2ACIB/329.1.2.1.1 Message Board Post: Thanks for your posting and the photo link. No, it's not likely your DeField ancestry is French at all. The line came to Canada from northern New Jersey. There are links to Sussex County c. 1750 era. We believe previous to that the family was in Columbia County, New York where five children were baptized. The parents were Edward DUNFIELD and Margaret Meyer/Myer. This family may have spoken German or English. Your particular line's connection to this family is a bit detailed to explain here as it's based on the confirmation of other proven connections that lead one to conclude they are part of this line. Your DeFields probably came from Britain under the surname of Dunfield.

    3. go to this page: http://www.genealogyforyou.com/usa/tennessee/greene/greehelp.htm#a6 And look at the First Tax List of 1783 - the year Greene was formed from Washington, TN which in 1796 was Washington, NC. On that list is Andrew BRABSON, Susan BRABSON, Barnett Brandon, Garrett Brandon and Thomas Brandon - who I am willing to bet if someone went and looked would discover they were all Bransons. The original tax list can be viewed at the Nathanael Greene Museum in Greeneville Is anyone located near Greeneville where they could view the original tax list, scrutinize it and determine if the above are Bransons? If you view the tax lists under the original you will find: 1791 Capt George Wilson's Company Robert Branson Land: 150 Thomas Branson Land: 251 1797 - Capt Jacob Henninger's Co - Thomas Branson Land: 192 White Polls: 2 1798 Capt John Heneger's Co. David Branson Thomas Jr. Thomas Sr 1800 Capt Dodd's Co - Robert Branson again - now he has no land

    1. Jared E. Branson
    2. Rubyslippers
    3. After taking a few years off, lately I have been back attacking the roots of Jared E. Branson born circa 1750. I've come to the same conclusion I came to when I took time off from this project - I can find no evidence that he was from the Huntington, NJ John Day, etc group. The first records I can find are 1782 - in Montgomery and Washington Co, VA. He appears with a Thomas. He has land, the Thomas does not. Then in 1793 in the Wythe County Personal Property tax list (a land list which has been partially lost) he appears in the 2nd Section (which became Grayson that year) with a James. Listed as "Jerard" and both as Branston. If anyone can show me definitive proof of this man's connection with the NJ group - that would be great - but I have never seen it. On the other hand, in 1706 a John Green owed a Garratt Branson money in St Mary's County, Maryland. In St. Mary's was a Thomas Branson died 1684 who married an Amy Barber. They had 3 children: Michael, Thomas Jr. and John. I have been working on this family. They had land in both St. Mary's and Charles county, MD which is across the river from Fairfax. John Branson born 1687-1770 - was the son of either the Michael or the John. He had 9 children. His son, Jonathan listed as born abt 1716, had a son Briscoe David born 12/5/1769. Briscoe had a son Leonard. Leonard named his son, Jerrod. Also in St. Mary's was Ann Compton, daughter of James Compton who married a Branson. In 1733, she was listed as a witness to a will with John Branson. I believe she may be the wife of the John Branson born 1687. Based on generations, she would have been born around 1690. A brother of James Compton was named Gerard. There is another Branson marriage in St. Mary's. Edward Barber (aka Barbier), died 1693. He was the brother of Amy who married Thomas Branson, Sr and he was a godfather to a John Branson. Edward had a child Mary who married a Branson. Among her children were Rebecca and Abraham Branson. Mary was born around late 1680's/early 1690's. The offspring of this Maryland group traveled by 1800 to Surry, Forsyth and Stokes, NC. 1810 Washington, VA and by 1840 some headed west - like to Jefferson Co, IL and Shelby, IN. So far I have found Jared listed as Jarret, Garrett, Gerrard, Jarrott, Jarrett and Jerard. In Grayson, VA in the 1794 PP Tax is a listing for "Jan A. Branson". Can no longer find a Thomas or James but in the area is a "Meraday Shockley". Branson as Branston, Brinson, Brunson, Bunson and Brandston among others. Question - has anyone else dug into the Maryland Branson records and have this figured out? Thanks, Sharon
