He was from Mayo. I have just spent 10 days in Mayo researching my Brannigans (and found them). What more can you tell me to see if there is a link? There were not too many Brannigans in Mayo (most were further north, especially Monaghan). Colin

The only connection I have to PA is John Branigan stating in the 1880 Census he was born in PA. Two of James Matthew Brannigan daughters stated in the 1920 census their father was born in PA (actually their father was born in TN, grandfather John was born in PA). John obviously was in Ohio, possibly Vinton. A John Branagan married Elizabeth Riffle in 1869, the dates fit, but have not verified that this is my John. JAMES MATTHEW BRANNIGAN (AKA Matt) (1878-1914) was my ggrandfather. He died at 34, his son died at age 3, one daughter at 16, another at 42, and another daughter at 54. At the time of his death only 3 sisters were listed as survivors. None of the Brannigans for two generations appeared to have lived to 60 years of age. Matt's wife remarried after his death, so we have lost the stories of the Brannigans. My Mom thought there was a Patrick in someone's name and that John had come over with only a sister. All of my Brannigans were Catholic. Again, thanks for the lead... Paula

Frank had a brother here in Plains named James, b. 1822 in Tyrone Ireland. It is possible that your John is a relative that moved to a different locale and Our Frank kept his son. Remember children as young as 7 years were already employed in mines at that time. Do you have any information on where your John was born? Plains is in NE Pa near Pittston.

Stepfather was James W. Monahan, age 42, his mother Annie, also age 42. Believe this Branigan is related to the John Branigan, b. abt 1830, in Pa, living in Stewart Co., TN for the 1880 Census as follows: John Branigan, age 50, farmer, b. PA, both parents b. Ireland Elizabeth Branigan, age 30, wife, b. VA, both parents b. VA Ellen, age 11, b. Ohio, Julia, age 6, b. TN Mathew, age 4, b. TN Nancy, age 2, b. TN William, age 3 months, born Jan 1880 James Matthew Brannigan (the above 4 year old) died in 1914. The newspaper mentioned his sisters Helen Brannigan of Clarksville, TN, and Julia Wallace & Annie Monahan of Louisville, Ky. [Julia Brannigan married George L. Wallace.] There was a Margaret Brannigan who married Robert Sheridan [Sheriden[ in Stewart Co., TN in 1882. It doesn't appear that your Felix is connected to my family, but the Ohio and Felix-name could make them cousins. Please email me if you are interested in more details, & good luck, Paula
