Author: mrratliff1 Surnames: Brannigan Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brannigan/75.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Not sure if this is your John Brannigan (I just read about him today in a book....it's called "Superior: Lest We Forget!" by R. D. Null. It's in the genealogy department at the Boyd Co. Library in Ashland, KY...not available to check out but I can make a copy of his story in it if you like). According to the book he was walking along DT&I train tracks and was killed. Now, there seems to be another John Brannigan in the same area....father? uncle? I'm not related to this family at all so I have no idea: http://www.lawrencecountyohio.com/civilwar/obits/brannigan.htm I also attached a picture of the train tracks where he was killed. If you go to Google Maps and in the search bar copy/paste this: "38.675877,-82.693113" and zoom way in you can see the tracks and get a feel for the area...the town is no longer there but it was called Superior and not far from there you can see the remains of the Marquette Cement Factory. John was a foreman at the plant there. Hope this helps! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: mmkmsm Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brannigan/214.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Bernard: I many be working the same family as you. My 2x great grandparents were Michael Morgan and Ann Branigan who were married in 1849 in Keady, Co. Armagh about 2 miles from Annagh. They baptized 3 of their 7 children in Keady, but I have been unable to find the other 4. I have found one marriage in Annayalla, Co. Monaghan in 1864 of a Morgan who married a Casey that I know is tied to my family so I have a strong hunch that they moved back and forth from Keady. Baptism dates in Keady were 1859, 1866 and 1867. There is a Michael Morgan living around a large group of Branigan's in the Griffith Valuation that was completed in Co. Monaghan around 1860. I would love to compare notes. My family immigrated to Dover, New Hampshire in the 1880's. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: bernie812 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brannigan/214.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Jan, My greatgrandfather, John, was born abt1860 in Annagh to Francis Branigan & Catherine Morgan. John had only 2 siblings Mary & Bernard. He left Annagh and married Mary Daly abt1886-87, and raised a family in the town of Drumgristin. John's first-born was Francis John(B1887) and his second Michael(B1888-my grandfather) both emigrated to NYC 1905-1907. Most of my info comes from genealogical research done by a relative in Ireland. There is no mention of family members being in Edinburg in 1880s. So, although these may be different families, the question of whether we are distant relatives remains possible. Spelling.....I have seen my family name on records spelled Branagan, Branigan & Brannigan. The name is said to have originated as O'Branagain(including O'Branigee & O'Branighan as possible variations). In 1850s land records for southern Monaghan there is a long list of Branigans and the name is almost exclusively spelled Branigan. Yet, in the 1901/11 census there are all sorts of variations of the name in the same area. Since the census records can be viewed while the 1850s land record is a transcribed listing, I tend to think the 1850 listing is flawed. I found little evidence of our surname in land owner records from the 1600s, with the exception of an Owen O'Branigee. I'll be in touch if come acoss anything that may be your family. I've found the Baptisms of some of the younger children in Castleblayney and Ballybay Monaghan John(1864), James(1869), Catherine(1869) and Edward(1874). Still need to find Mary(c1860),my great grandmother, and Owen(c1862) and Ann(c1864). All except James (who I assumed died) were in Edinburgh on the 1881 census. Don't know if they are the same family, once I find the marriage for John and Catherine it hopefully will give me Johns parents names. Author: bernie812 Surnames: Brannigan, Daly Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.brannigan/214/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My grandfather Michael(Mick) Branagan is listed on the 1901 census in the town of Drumgristin as the son of John & Mary Daly Branagan. In 1911 census name is spelled Branigan. Michael and at least 2 of his brothers, Francis J. & Owen, emigrated to NYC. I am told my ancestral name is Barney Frank. My ancestors can be traced back to Annagh, Clontibret, Monaghan in the 1901/11 census, where there are many Brannigans of various spelling. From Drumgristin to Annagh my ancestral line going back from my grandfather was Michael-John-Francis Jr.-Francis Sr.-Bernard. I know there are descendants of the Drumgristin Brannigans in Belfast. I am also updated on all Michaels family in NYC. I do not yet know however what became of Michaels brothers, Francis J. and Owen after they came to the U.S. Interested in connecting with anyone of this Brannigan family.
