Handsel and Sarah Grissop, and the Stanley Historical Association. In its time, Stanley has been a part of five different counties. Historians tell us that the countryside that later became the town of Stanley lay in territory that was included in: *The Country of Anson in 1748 *In Mecklenburg County in 1762 *In Tryon County in 1769 *In Lincoln County in 1779, after the Independence from England. North Carolina was admitted as a state on 21 November 1789 - 12th of the original 13 counties. *In 1846 Stanley became part of Gaston County. *For most of the early part of the 1800's, though, the country encompassing the town of Stanley was Lincoln. Copies of the book are on sale for $40 and are available at Brevard Station Museum, 130 S. Main Street. Stanley, NC 28164 704-263-4928
