I was able to get into the LDS on-line site last night - it is very busy during the day. I used the URL that was posted earlier and got a message that the site had moved to http://www.familysearch.org You have to enter a first and last name and sometimes the response is slow but it is on-line. As "advertised" it is only a start but I spent 3 hours tracing data last night. There are down sides but the LDS library isn't open at ten o'clock at night so don't knock it. Some of the down sides I found were: 1. In the Ancestral file, the link that gives the names of the person submitting the material does not appear to be working. 2. In tracing a family back I found the material after the 4th generation appeared to be jumbled (my term), i.e. the family had a child born in Denmark in the same year as one born in Virginia, the child was born 20 years after the mother died, that sort of thing. Before someone flames me - yes, I am aware that Ancestral file data is suspect, it is only as good as the submitter has researched it and sources are not sited but it can sometimes be a lead. 3. The pedigree charts are selectable but only give entry, the family link on the charts is not operational yet. The up side. 1. This is a great start. They aren't charging us $60.00 a year - well, not yet anyway. 2. You don't have to trek out to the LDS library, if there is one in your area. 3. You don't have to wait on snail mail. 4. It is one more source available. Anyway, that's my take on the LDS site. Have to go see if I can get in again, right after I make an appointment to have my eyes checked. Good Luck.
