Third Judicial Circuit Court. John Thurman, Soloman Silcon (?), Simon Huddleston, Benjamin Poore, John Ric--- ?, Joshua Storie and Catherine Storie his wife and etc. (Abstract of file). Mentions a mill on Wolf River. Reference is made to Billy Beach. Refers to certain negroes -- Tom, Fanny, Solomon and others. Refers to Joseph Evans. One paper refers to going to North Carolina on business. Another paper mentions Lewis Carlton in North Carolina. One paper says that the family of William Beach consisted of six or seven children. There is mention of a place called Barksville, thirty-three miles from ------ (torn). Joshua Storie, Sr., on oath states he was acquainted with Mr. Bradshaw before coming from North Carolina and that he lived in the same house with me two or three weeks, then I moved away and never seen him for about thirteen years, when I saw him at my son Joshua Stories, he did not know me. When I started away my son told him who I was and he caught me in his arms. Signed Joshua Storie. Witnessed by Jas. Whiteside, J. P. Catharine Storie being sworn, age 44 years, says she had a long acquaintance with Mr. Bradshaw and his wife, as well as Beach. She knew them twelve or thirteen years in North Carolina. She understood that Mr. Bradshaw when on his death bed was 80 years of age. “Our conversation was twelve or thirteen years ago. There was mention that Mr. Bradshaw conveyed property to Wm. Beach and Mrs. Bradshaw threatened to leave Mr. Bradshaw and that she would and could not live apart from her daughter at the time they were about moving to the farm bought from Mr. Storie. Mrs. Bradshaw said that she had but one child and she would not be parted by no man on earth from her. Mrs. Bradshaw said she had never been married before she married Mr. Bradshaw. Old Mr. Bradshaw said he had to pay tax both in Tennessee and North Carolina and that he was so hard of hearing he did not want to pay tax and he always put the money in hands of Billy Beach for him to settle it. About eleven or twelve years ago the old gentleman said that Billy had been down several times after his money and he did not know what Billy done with it. Must spent it for Rum along with Abernathy’s boys. He may have give it to his brother or drank it up. Said William Beach has lived with and supported Bradshaw’s wife. Mr. Bradshaw said Billy Beach lived on his place.. Mrs. Bradshaw said she had given William Beach’s children some clothing both boys and girls for twenty years and some she intended for her daughter Mrs. Beach. Another time at Mr. Brmbletts, Mrs. Bradshaw was getting something in the store and said it was stuff to make bonnetts for one of the girls and intended to get each of the girls a white dress. She said most of the money Beach paid was her money. She talked about money Beach owed old Mr. Storie, Signed Catherine Storie. J. Whiteside J. P. Sworn to in Overton County, 4 June 1819. Deposition of Joseph Evans in Overton County, 15 Feby, 1820. Joseph Evans age 34 years, deposeth --- Was present at signing of bill of sale between William Bradshaw and William Beach. Word came by boys “that lived with me” to come down there. “I” went down to Beaches and saw John Thurman in the mill yard. He said “we” go up to the old house, after going up near the barn or house in the field he turned around to me and said ---- “about to give bill of sale for three negroes from Bradshaw to Beach” Went to the house and stayed some time before Beach came there. Beach had the papers. “I cannot read so I handed it to William Beach and he read it. “ When it was read Mr. Bradshaw (hard of hearing) said “What is this 420 pounds put in for I never received anything.” Mr. Thurman spoke up “Something put in to make it good.” The old man sat and said nothing. William Beach spoke “Grandfather if you aren’t willing don’t do it.” The old lady spoke “We are willing aren’t we honey.” Then Mr. Bradshaw said “I reckon so.” The negroes were called and delivered. “I was well acquainted with Mr. Bradshaw.” “He was nearly deaf and blind.” William Beach had lived at Hind’s plantation. Bradshaw and Beach lived on the same plantation and on the place where also Mr. Dalton now lives and they moved on Thurman’s place with exception Mr. Beach living a while at Hind’s plantation. Signed Jos. Evans. Simon Huddleston deposition. Age 57 years. Had an acquaintance with Mr. Bradshaw a short time when he first came to this country. I thoughgt his mental condition was impaired. It was by age. Mrs. Bradshaw and Beach were always present at transactions of the old man. Bradshaw lived on Wolf on Thurman place. Wm. Beach lived on the same plantation. None of the Bradshaw’s children lived with him at that time. Mr. Bradshaw said Beach was his grandson. Signed Simon Huddleston, Sworn Feb. 15, 1820 Ov erton County, Tenn. William Atkinson J. P. Deposition of Joseph McFarland taken in Sevier County, Tennessee at the house of Samuel Henry 14 May 1821. Joseph McFarland, age 44 years. He mentions being witness with Benjamin Poore to Bill of Sale. William Bradshaw to Wm. Beach for negroes. Also mentions land in North Carolina. Thurman lived in Kentucky. “I went home and told my wife what had happened. I said I was sorry I was there.” Thurman proved the bill of sale in Overton County. The following court depositions are from the book “Overton County, Tennessee Genealogic Records” Compiled by Edythe Rucker Whitley published by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1983. Pages 80 through 87. I only have these pages wish I could find the original book. I have copied the information as it appeared with editing. I have copies of the depositions from the Tennessee State Archives and am attempting to read the writing but I am sure that Ms. Whitley has done a much better job than I will be able to do. I am posting this in 4 parts in order not to overload my mail system. I have not found what was the outcome of the case. Wonder why Judith Beach was named in the suit but all depositions seem to be about her son William. Any way I found them interesting, hope you do also. After I finish translating the originals if I find any glaring differences or more details I will post them.

Hi Ray, I have noticed your New York and Canada Bradshaw information including the unconnected Bradshaws. However, I cannot find part one of two on the unconnected Bradshaws. My wife's Bradshaw is Horatio Bradshaw, who lived in Elizabeth Town, Leeds Co., Ontario from 1801 to about 1821. He married Mary DeGroot about 1800 and had a daughter Catherine, who married Abraham Palmer in about 1820 and went to Henry Co., Iowa. Horatio Bradshaw married second Rachel Dockon 16 Nov 1831 in Johnstown District, Leeds Co., Ontario. In 1840 and 1850 he is in the census for Alexander, Jefferson Co., NY. In 1850 he states that he was born in Vermont. He was in his seventies at the time. Do you have anything on this Horatio Bradshaw. Thanks for any help you can give. Lee Pound Irvine, CA

Thanks for the advice. I will take the DAR information like the census - as a starting place. I am just "searching" for ANY documentation that will help me clear up the marriages of Isaiah Bradshaw - Elizabeth Thompson and Mary Harvey. May have to go with bigamy :-) Also ANY documentation that will place Jennette Reid Bradshaw, with the many spellings of her first name, as a daughter of Isaiah & Elizabeth. The only "proof" I have so far is family letter, family history and naming patterns. Maybe that is enough but can't help wondering.

Just ran across this paper and wasn’t sure whether it had been posted or not: Goochland Co., VA Order Book 6 p 375 15 Sep 1747 Judith Bradshaw comes into Court and makes Oath that William Bradshaw deceased died without any will so far as she knows or believes and on her motion a certificate is granted her for obtaining letters of Administration in due form. John Merriman and Benjamin Bradshaw entering themselves security for the same. Ordered that Benjamin Mosby, Hezeekiah Mosby, Philip Poindexter and Samuel Scott or any three of them being first sworn before some Justice of the Peace do appraise the Estate of William Bradshaw deceased and that his Administratrisc do return an Inventory thereof to the next Court.

Does anyone know anything about William Larkin Bradshaw, b. early 1800s (I think). He's the surety on the marriage bond for Michael Abernathy and Isabella West. I think Michael's parents or grandparents might have been Miles Abernathy and Ursula Bradshaw (aka, Usley Bratcher). I'm trying to determine the relationship between Ursula and William Larkin. Kenneth, Ron and List, My Samuel Bradshaw is the one who married Jemima Gately in Caldwell Co., KY on July 20, 1819. In the 1820 census for Caldwell Co, KY it list Samuel, a baby boy and woman < 25. They are next door to Jemima mother--Widow Gately. Widow Gately's name is also Jemima so her family was a bit confussing at first because everyone had the same names! but now have it traced back to 1700's. What a story that is. (Widow Jemima Gately's father killed her husband: John Gately and left her with 9 children (of which one was Samuel Bradshaw's wife Jemima Gately.) Anyway, back to Samuel Bradshaw and wife Jemima Gately. They are in Caldwell Co., with 1 child in 1820 Census (cad-44-16). Samuel is also listed in lots of court records for Caldwell Co. for being part of the survey team during 1809 thru 1821. By 1830 Census they are in Madison Co., TN next to Jemima brother John Gately and his family and other members of Jemima's family. They (Samuel & Jemima) now have young 2 sons and 3 young daughters. I have not found were they went or where in 1840 since I have not had time to confirm that census. By 1850 their son, my gggrandfather, John Gately Bradshaw had married Mary Elizabeth (Polly) Whitlock in Greene Co., MO on Feb. 18, 1844 by C.C. Williamson. John and Mary Elizabeth Bradshaw left Missouri with Samuel Whitlock in 185? (about the time as the donner party) Most of Jemima's family stayed in Missouri and Arkansas. Elisabeth, Tag, you got me on that one (typo on my part). You are absolutely correct. It is Richard Ammon BRADSHAW who married Lydia Prigmore. Time for me to buy a new pair of glasses <grin>. I have Joseph PRIGMORE's birth as 1720 and death date as 1827, but did not know the cause. Wow, 107 years, never did the math on the dates. I have Joseph's wife as Ann Christian MOORE (1735 - 20 Nov 1825). Does that match your info? You have to remember that the earlier DAR people did not have access to records the way we do today. It isn't that they were lax about documentation, it is that the documentation was not available many times. Remember that census records are held for 72 years before they are released. Earlier DAR records do not provide one with the information that later DAR records provide. Believe me, the documentation you have to go through is stringent. Also, the DAR publishes lists where once they discover wrong info, or better documentation, etc. they make note of what the next person has to prove. Anyone who has researched for any amount of time, knows that you always have to take the info with a grain of salt no matter where the info came from. I have received info passed down through the family, where someone left out a whole generation of their family. DAR has done many wonderful things. Many times if there is a burned out county, etc. check to see if DAR doesn't have records. DAR went around the country copying records and sometimes will be the only place you can find the documentation you need. It isn't DAR that put out the wrong info, it was the researcher that didn't research properly. It can be very difficult to verify whether info is true or not.
