Hi Margie, It's really great when someone comes foreward with information like this about a family. It would be great if you would post the original records that you have and if you haven't posted your line to the list, please do that also so we will have it in the archives. It sounds very interesting. Thank you. Anne
Becky, this is interesting to think about: Your John Franklin Bradshaw's nephew, (? half-nephew? , if there is such a designation) Cyrus Franklin Bradshaw, was a prisoner at City Point, MD at that time. Does anyone know if City Point is another designation for Point Lookout? Born c1845 in Iredell Co NC to Josiah and Asenath Gaultney Bradshaw. His pension application indicates he was captured 3 April 1865 at Appomattox, was on the Roll of Prisoners of War at City Point, Md, 13 April 1865 and released on Oath of Allegiance the 23 June 1865 (same date as John Franklin) : fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, 5' 8" Enlisted late 1862 in the 38th Inf Reg Co G, NC. Lived in Alexander Co NC after the war, but was in TX by 1880 (can share information on Josiah's Descendants) Dorothy ---------- > From: partyof10 <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Subject: [BRADSHAW-L] John Franklin of Lincoln county > Date: Thursday, March 11, 1999 9:04 PM <snip> > John was in the civil was and became a prison of war on March 25, 1865 > near Petersburg, Virginia and was confined at Point Lookout, > Maryland on March 28, 1965. > He remained a prisoner of was until his release on June 23, 1865. > John Franklin was described in his > Confederate record as having a fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, > and standing 6 feet and 1 inch. I am sending this to the list so that we can get input from all of you that are interested. Is there anyone on the list from England who can help with verification of this info.? Anne -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: Penns & Bradshaws Date: Sat, 21 Nov 1998 13:04:09 -0000 From: "William Lees" <[email protected]> To: "Mark Lawson" <[email protected]> Mark here's some information that came originally from [email protected] (Jack Plumley). He doesn't cite the source of the information on the children of John Bradshaw: if you are able to establish this from him or from others I'd be interested to know. Hope this is of interest William Descendants of William Penne Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM2 PENNE (JOHN 1) was born 1520. He married ??. Notes for WILLIAM PENNE: In his will dated 5/1/1590, and proved 1592, he called himself "Willm Penne of Minetie in the County of Glouc. yeoman" To the children of his deceased son 2. William Penn, who he named as Giles, William, Maria, Sara, Susanna Penn, he bequeasted (sic) (sic) twenty pounds apiece when they came of age, or at time of their marriage. To Margaret Penn widow of his son William Penn, he left an annuity of ten pounds so long as she "keeps herself sole and chaste and unmarried." If she married again or led an unchaste life, she was to receive twenty pounds "a good bed with all manner of Furniture theretofore belonging and so she ( was then ) to depart. As heir and sole executor he named his grandson George Penn, eldest son of his deceased son William; he was to receive after debts and legacies were paid, the residue of his estate, "movable and unmovable." As overseers he named Robert George of Cirencester, Richard Lawrence of Withington, Glos., and Francis Bradshaw of Wokley, Wilts., with power to see that all his testamentary instructions were carried out. To his daughter Ann Green and her daughter Elizabeth Greene he gave to each a heifer. To Richard Bidle he gave one cow, to his daughter Katherine Bidle a heifer, to William Mallibroke a yearling heifer, and to Alice Thermor his "old white mare." Witnesses to the will included Francis Bradshaw, William Taylor, and Richard Munden. Child of WILLIAM PENNE and ?? is: 2. i. WILLIAN3 PENN, b. Abt. 1544; d. 1588. Generation No. 2 2. WILLIAN3 PENN (WILLIAM 2 PENNE, JOHN 1) was born Abt. 1544, and died 1588. He married MARGARET RASTALL 1570. Notes for WILLIAM PENN: William Penn, son of William Penne of Minety and grandson of John Penne of the same place, was apprenticed as a law clerk to the counselor-at-law, Christopher George of Bawnton, near Cirencester, eventually becoming his chief clerk. he was married by 1570 to Margaret Rastall daughter of John Rastall Alderman of Gloucester and wife Anne George a sister to the above Christopher. William and Margaret Penn apparently settled in Malmesbury four or five miles southwest of Minety. In the Malmesbury Subsidy Roll of 1570-71, 13 Elizabeth I, William was taxed six shillings on his movable goods and was taxed there again ten years later. According to Brigadier Hogg, he was not listed in the Subsidy Rolls for 1586-87, but in the Lay Subsidy Roll for Malmesbury borough in the Public Record Office is the entry for " William Penn goods iij li--iij d, as sited by Mr. Lea (note 7) It is apparent however, that William Penn was deceased by 1588, and that in 1590 his widow and six children were living with the Elder William Penne. Note 7 PMHB, XIV, 291. This last entry is not cited by Brigadier Hogg. Child of WILLIAM PENN and MARGARET RASTALL is: 3. i. CAPTAIN GILES4 PENN, b. Abt. 1573; d. 1656. Generation No. 3 3. CAPTAIN GILES4 PENN (WILLIAN 3, WILLIAM 2 PENNE, JOHN 1) was born Abt. 1573, and died 1656. He married JOAN GILBEART. Notes for CAPTAIN GILES PENN: Giles Penn son of William Penn, the law clerk of Malmesbury, and his wife Margaret Rastall, was born perhaps about 1573. Brigadier Hogg suggests that he may have been named for Giles, Lord Chandos who , in 1573, became lord of the manor of Minety. He was apprenticed as "Egidius Penne, filius Willi nup. de Myntie... defunct," to the linen draper, John Horte of Bristol, and Juliane his wife, on 1 May 1593, a year after his grandfather's will was offered for probate. It was as "Gylles Penn draper," that he was admitted to the "Liberties" of Bristol on 3 April 1600 "because he was Prentice of Mr John Horte, Alderman, Deceased" (note 11) The following 5 November 1600 he married at St. Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, Joan Gilbeart (Gilbert), of a family originally from Yorkshire. >From draper Giles Penn progressed to Merchant with his younger brother William and by 1618 had been overtaken with financial losses. In 1630 records show that he was traveling between the Babary Coast, importing and selling assorted goods. Styled Captain Penn in 1631. he was in London in 1636, and the following year when he was appointed resident consul for Charles I at Sallee ( Sale Morocco), he was described as " a man well experienced in the language and custom of said country." He was deceased, probably overseas, by 1656, when a new consul was appointed at Sallee. (note 12) Note 11 The apprenticeship and citizenship records sited in the text above are from NEHGR, 54, 326-327 Note 12 For a more extended account of Giles Penn see Hogg, Further Light, 27-31. Child of CAPTAIN PENN and JOAN GILBEART is: 4. i. RACHELL5 PENN, b. February 24, 1606/07. Generation No. 4 4. She married ISAAC PLUMLEY 1796, son of WILLIAM PLUMLEY and PHEBE DENTON. Notes for MARGARET PEGGY BRADSHAW: Margaret Bradshaw ancestors go back to England. One James Bradshaw and brother John was a first cousin to William Penn. James came to Pennsylvania to help William Penn and start a new life in this new land. Margaret has a stone in Blackjack Cem in Carroll Co., Ark. She is not buried there, her descendants placed a stone there in her memory, because she is buried on what is now private property and the owners would not allow at stone to be placed there. I do not know when this was done, or by whom. In the picture I have the stone looks rather new. Notes for ISAAC PLUMLEY: Isaac was believed to have been born in Shenandoah Co., VA. (Previously Dunmore Co., VA.) as his father William was a land holder in the county. Isaac was possibly a resident of Knox Co., Tenn. in 1799 as he was noted as a Bondman for his sister Martha Patsy at the time of her marriage to Alexander Foster. Isaac was a resident of White Co., Tenn. at the time of his death. His Will dated 27 Sept. 1835, proven in White Co., Tenn. Jan 11 1836 William and Phebe migrated from Dunmore (now Shenandoah Co.,) Virginia to Rickingham, Co., North Carolina about 1780. They were living in Burke, Co., North Carolinia by 1790; in Greenville, Co., North Carolina by 1791 and migrated to Knox, Co.,Tennessee about 1794. They had 11 children all born in White Co., Tennessee. Descendants lived in Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and elsewhere. Families related to Plumlee's Cummings, Williams, Standlee, Brown, Simmons, and others. Child of MARGARET BRADSHAW and ISAAC PLUMLEY is: i. JOEL SR.11 PLUMLEE, b. August 10, 1800, White Co., Tennessee; d. February 1863, Stone Co., MO.. Notes for JOEL SR. PLUMLEE: Joel was named after his grandfather Joel Jefferson Bradshaw. Joel and William are suspected to be twins as Joel's head stone Aug 10 1800 with William's Aug,27 1800. After Joel marriage they settled on a farm in White Co., Tenn. Moving to Ark. on Mar 22 1832. They traveled by wagon pulled by a yolk of oxen thru Nashville Tenn. then to the Ohio River at Ford's ferry to Chester on the Mississippi River and then on to Fayetteville Ark. >From there they journeyed on to War Eagle, 4 miles northwest of Huntville in Washington Co., Ark. Which was later revised to be in Madison Co., Ark. Arriving on May 29 1832. Joel moved from his home near Huntville in 1837 to the community of Berryville Ark. He built his home near a large ever flowing spring to what is now the corner of Main and College streets. In 1839 they moved to the community of Blackjack where they resided until 1849. By 1850 the family settled in Tanny Co., MO. and is reported to have been buried in an area defined as table Rock Lake, but removed during the lakes construction to Kimberling City, Stone Co., MO. (more about Joel Sr.) Joel and at least two brothers were in Carroll in 1832. Joel homesteaded 180 acres where Berryville, Ark., is now located. He sold the first building lot to Henderson Barry for a store building in 1850. Berryville, Ark., was named after Henderson Barry.

>From "Virginia Revolutionary War Pension Applications Volume Nine" Abstracted and compiled by John Frederick Dorman, Washington D.C., 1964 Pages 58 & 59 BRADSHAW, Robert. S.6708. 18 Sept. 1847. Goochland Co., Va. John BRADSHAW, a Revolutionary soldier, in his 85th year, declares his brother Robert BRADSHAW enlisted in 1777 at Goochland Court House with Capt. HAWKINS for three years and marched to the north where he served out his term of enlistment. He acted as a non-commissioned officer in the 14th Virginia Regiment. He returned home and went to the south with the militia and was at GATES' defeat and there acted as adjutant in some regiment. John was then a prisoner at Charleston. When he returned home, not seeing his brother, he inquired for him and was informed he had enlisted again for the war. He did not see him until on the march to Yorktown when he fell in with him in the army of Gen. STEUBEN under Col. POSEY and Col. LOVELY. While at Yorktown he and Robert went within the enemy's lines and cut two horses loose from the timbers of the enemy's cannon and brought them into their camp. The horses were given to him by the officers. Robert acted as orderly sergeant until after discharged after the surrender of CORNWALLIS. They marched to Cumberland Old Court House and were discharged by Col. Christopher FEEBAKER (Christian FEGIBER). Robert BRADSHAW remained several years in Virginia and then moved to North Carolina where he died leaving several sons and daughters. 2 Nov. 1847. Rowan Co., N.C. Richard BARNS of Davidson County where he was born and raised, aged 67, declares Robert BRADSHAW was married soon after he moved to this county from Virginia. He heard him say he was a Revolutionary soldier. He had one child, Betsy, by his first wife, whom he brought from Virginia. She now lives in Tennessee. He had five children by his second wife, Polly, Unity, Austin, William and Robert. Unity and William are dead and the others live in this country {should this be "county"?}. He settled on the east side of Yadkin River about five miles above Long's Ferry and lived there until his death. 2 Nov. 1847. Rowan Co., N.C. Elisha NUNNALLY, aged 69, declares he was born and raised in Virginia and moved to this county in his 21st year. He has heard Robert BRADSHAW say he came from Goochland Co., Va., and talk of his services in the Revolutionary War. He had one child, Betsey, by his first wife. She married Thimothy MERRILL and moved to Tennessee. He had five children by his second wife, Polly, Unity, Austin, William and Robert. Unity and William are dead and the rest live in this part of the country. He lived on the east bank of Yadkin River about five miles above Long's Ferry, now Davidson County. 23 Nov. 1847. Caswell Co., N.C. William KENNON of said county declares he is upwards of 85 years and formerly lived in goochland Co., Va., where he knew Robert BRADSHAW. He saw him frequently in Goochland County while engaged in raising a company of men and was orderly sergeant under Capt. Samuel WOODSON. He subsequently saw him in Rowan Co., N.C., about twenty-five years ago. 29 Jan. 1784. John OVERTON, Jr., Captain, certifies Robert BRADSHAW enlisted 20 Jan. 1777 for three years and served until discharged by Col. Christian FEBIGER 20 Jan. 1780. Robert BRADSHAW assigned his right to land to Math. THOMSON. The will of Robert BRADSHAW was dated 6 Feb. 1832 and proved in Rowan Co., N.C., 20 Feb. 1832. The executors were R. N. CRAIG and Robert BRADSHAW, Jr. 6 Nov. 1856. Rowan Co., N.C. Orstin BRADSHAW of Davidson County in said state, aged 69, declares his father, Robert BRADSHAW enlisted in 1777 at Goochland Court House, Va., with Capt. HAWKINS for three years and marched to the north. He was a non-commissioned officer in the 14th Virginia Regiment. After the expiration of his term he returned home and went south with the militia and was at GATES' defeat as adjutant of a regiment. He enlisted again for the war under Capt. LOVELT and Col. POSEY and was at Yorktown as orderly sergeant. Warrant 2482 for 200 acres of bounty land was issued by Virginia in the right of his service 3 Feb. 1784. Robert BRADSHAW died at his house in Rowan Co., N.C., the third Monday in Feb. 1832. His only surviving child is Orstin BRADSHAW. Robert BRADSHAW, deceased, private in the Virginia Line for two years, was placed on the Fayetteville, N.C., pension roll at $80 per annum under the Act of 1832 from 4 March 1831 to 20 Feb. 1832. Certificate 33400 was issued 12 May 1857. All of the surname capitalizations except for the first one are mine. This is the last of these that I have. I want to thank Virginia Phillips again for the time she spent in the library photo-copying these pages. I'm sure a lot of us have been helped by these. Anne Does anyone know anything of ORSTIN BRADSHAW?
