I don't like to put down any manufacturer, and, from all I hear, Family Tree Maker is an excellent product. However, Nancy's original question was whether to buy additional CDs from Broderbund (I gather she already has FTM). The FTM users in the Pikes Peak Computer Genealogists universally advise against buying the additional CDs. They advise that, when buying FTM, you buy the bargain version, and not the more deluxe versions, because you are paying for CDs. It's not that that information on the CDs is bad information (though I understand that it is not screened, edited, or verified in any way by Broderbund). It's that the odds of finding information pertaining to any particular line of research on a given CD are pretty poor. Since so many people have various CDs, which came with FTM when they bought it, it should be possible to start a pool of them to share within a genealogical club or an FTM users' group. Bonne chasse!
