That should last us awhile. The next upgrade we plan is to double the memory in the main list server (lists.rootsweb.com) to 512 MB of DRAM. To accomplish that, we'll need to take the box entirely offline for 2-3 hours and there may be some brief downs after that while we tune things up. The downs will occur during the next 48 hours, and possibly as early as this afternoon if all goes well. After the main memory in the list server is upgraded, the next box we'll be upgrading is the search engine server. The new search engine server will have a gigabyte of DRAM and 45 GB of very high- speed RAID-5 disk storage. When the search engine upgrades are complete, we'll reindex the list archives, reindex the USGenWeb archives, give Marc Nozell all the space he'll ever need for the list archiver (:, and set up scheduled reindexing so the list and USGenWeb Archives searches stay fairly close to current. As always, I'd like to express RootsWeb's appreciation for your support. With a gigabyte of memory costing $3,500 and a RAID-5 array costing $7,500, we couldn't be doing all this without the support of RootsWeb's Members, Sponsors, and Donors. 3. Tommy Corder asked for data about Benjamin Bradley. Mr. Wendell Bradley of Indianapolis in his book "Bradley" referred to a book written by Arnold L. Bradley titled "The Bradley-Cocke and Related Lines". The following data comes from both books: Benjamin Bradley b 1790 d after 1860 married Margaret Campbell about 1816. They had the following children: Mary b @1818 married Elezer D. Webster Justin P. b @1819 married Caroline Mothershead Felix b 1820 married (1) unknown, (2) Sarah Volley Margaret b 1822 married Jacob Dye Susan Jane b 1824 married Raney Dye Catharine b 1828 married John H. Anderson Amphenomile b 1831 Josephine E. b 1835 Bazabel b 1836 Layton Green b 1838 Sources: 1850 and 1860 Monroe Co Census; Monroe Co Marriages Benjamin Bradley was the son of Benjamin C. Bradley b @1760 d1824KY married Susan MaryJones @1787. Wiltshire John b@1804 Sources: Woodford KY marriages and researchers; Christian Co, KY marriages; 1850 Christian Co census Benjamin C. Bradley is believed to be the son of Robert Bradley b @1721 d@1786 and Ann Williams. However, Wendell Bradley states in his book that there were two other Robert Bradleys in Orange Co, VA, at this same time. One Robert Bradley does list Benjamin in his will in St. Thomas Parish, Bk. 3 page 112. This Robert Bradley is believed to be the son of John Bradley b 1676 Northumberland Co,VA d 1762 Caroline Co,VA married Mary Rhodes. John Bradley is believed to be the son of Robert Bradley b @1636 England, d before 1680 and his wife Ann Bradshaw. These last two generations certainly need further research. The following areas of search are listed in Wendell Bradley's book: Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol 19 and 20; Northumberland Co,VA, records; Middlesex Co, VA, records; Caroline Co,VA, Culpeper Co, VA and Orange Co, VA, records. Good luck with your hunting! Jane Sumpter Malone-George

    1. [BRADLEY-ROOTS-L] Administrivia-- HOW TO SUBMIT A QUERY
    2. Jim & Mary Pat Young
    3. J.J. Johnson posted this information on another mailing list; and, since it would be fruitless for me to attempt any kind of improvement, I'll just pass it along. This information is appropriate for any mailing list. Happy Huntin' Jim Young --------------------------------------- J.J. Johnson Writes: Hello Kuzinz, To make your query work harder for you remember the old rules of news reporting and include as many of the following things possible: WHO: State the names of people as completely as you can. WHAT: Try to limit your query to one or two specific events or bits of information. Post another one or more later with additional questions rather than load all your questions into one. In this way each of your questions will stand out and get attention. WHEN: Dates are important, if you don't know the day, month and year try to put in a period (1790's, late 1800's etc.) WHERE: Mention the location in the body of the query. Include a more specific location if you can. WHY: Why are you searching for this(these) individual(s)? Describe your connection to him/her. HOW: How your query appears will often get subscriber's attention. Check spelling, grammar and format. Apply the KISS SYSTEM: Keep It Simple Simple. SUBJECT FIELD: To get the most from your query, place the SURNAME, LOCATION, YEAR in the subject field. Remember, many subscribers belong to multiple list servers. Some go through their mail looking at subject fields only. REPETITION: Once you have an acceptable looking query, save it. Use it again about once a month, because new members join often. Also, you may use it on web sites that accept them. EXAMPLE: Here is an example of one of my standard querys. Look for the ingredients mentioned above. ---Begin Example--- FROM: gnbf@gate.net SUBJECT: JOHNSON, b.14Jul1914, Sevier County, AR MESSAGE: James Howard JOHNSON was born in DeQueen of Sevier County, AR on 14Jul1914. He married Treacy Blanch PENG in 1937 in AR. He was a musician and trick roper with a rodeo. Offspring are: Rosetta Lawanda, b1938, TN Anice Irene, b1943, TN James William, b1944, TN (This is me!) James Howard is my father; I haven't heard from him since 1954. At that time, he lived in Lamar, CO and had remarried to Helen ?? Since his name doesn't appear in the SSDI, I am working on the belief that he is still alive. ---End Example--- REMEMBER: Your goal is to get information. A list server (discussion group) such as this is an excellent means for helping you reach it. Make the query work! By following these recommendations, your query stands a better chance of being read and you may make that great contact that you need. GOOD QUERIES CONNECT...jj ---------------------------------------------- J.J. Johnson (gnbf@gate.net) http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/4143 ----------------------------------------------
